Wasn't logic and efficiency the things that made the Manhunters betray the Guardians in the first place?

At what point did this, ANY of this, seem like a good idea to the Guardians?

Well. That explains why the alphas are such assholes. I'd be an asshole too if I got techno-tentacle raped into a cyborg!

Normal lanterns get a ring showing up, I swear I remember something like a Lantern showing up. But basically it was something that did the whole "scanning for suitable replacement" thing when he said no.

I recall Morrison referring to the Alphas as the FBI to the GLC's police. Therefore the Guardians could be classified as the ever-inept conservative government of yesteryear.

And you can bet that if they got succeeded by someone confident - e.g., Ganthet and the Blue Lanterns taking control over the GLC - then there'd be a faction within the GLC continually suspecting the new Guardians of being behind a conspiracy to destroy the Lanterns, or wanting to spread the rings to everyone, or accusing Ganthet of never being born on Oa in the first place...

[info]mania21

No no, Ganthet has experience in ACTUAL leadership, based on what you're saying, whoever takes over would have to be someone who excells in speech making, and campaigning without any actual governing experience, and have an all powerful support group ready to shoot down any legitimate criticism, not to mention blind support from most major sources of common information. I don't see anyone like that on OA.

Because, prior to Johns, they weren't remotely this bad.

Somewhat dickish and reluctant to admit to mistakes, but ultimately good guys that had been protecting the universe for eons.

"No man escapes the Manhunters" is cool

"No Lantern escapes the Alpha-Lanterns" is just dumb. On several levels.

They were Morrison's idea. I wouldn't doubt it if they were created just so he could use them in FC.

Given they only featured in a small fraction of Final Crisis, and they could have been replaced by having ANY random GL under Granny Goodness' control, I doubt it was simply a case of Morrison wanting them there.

Johns clearly liked the idea of displaying that the Guardians were moving along the wrong path, post-SCW, and this is a great way of doing it, by showing they haven't learned from past mistakes. So they might have been Morrison's idea, but Johns went all the way and developed them.

[info]stig

Definitely Morrison's idea, but also definitely Johns' character development. All Morrison wanted was, and I quote the script to issue #1, "...the super-elite, the upgraded version - with hearts replaced by power batteries and implanted rings on each hand". Morrison probably only specifically used Kraken because she is from New Genesis, and allowed Johns to cherry-pick any others based on the character traits - Chaselon's misguided trust in the Guardians, Boodika's lust for glory, Green Man's search for a personal identity.

Morrison is credited with the idea in the issue preceding these scans.

It's a pity that Green Man especially got shoved aside - his former partner was that robot GL. I'd just love to see a conversation between them where Green Man is now the unemotional machine...

This is actually pretty horrifying. Did the Gaurdians tell those Lanterns what they were going into, or did they lie to them, or not tell them anything?

Poor Boodikka :(

If I recall correctly, the Guardians said Alpha Lanterns would get a second ring, no longer need to sleep, but would lose their prior identity.

The only good thing that came from the alpha lanterns is Kraken's top/power battery covers her chest now. I'm hoping that when Sodam Yat's done being daxam's sun he can finally put his Ion powers to good use and turn the alpha lanterns back to normal.

Does anyone else think the 'disco ball' alien looks totally ridiculous with the alpha lantern gasmask thingie on? Scratch that...they ALL look ridiculous. He just looks beyond the pale.

And they're not the FBI to the GLC's police. They're the Internal Affairs division to the detective/beat cops.

What exactly was the justification for the creation of the Alpha Lanterns? That they were broadening the Lantern's enforcement powers (lethal force is now regularly allowed), so they needed stronger enforcement? And that 'no lantern shall escape the Alpha Lanterns' stuff seems really inappropriate and different in tone from the 'No man shall escape the Manhunters' feel. The 'Best Elements'? I think you have that backwards...it looks like you took those OUT.
