Mmmm...Jam....
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all my fellow canuckleheads. I hope you all enjoy your food comas. I was in the midst of mine when it occurred to me to propose a theme: FOOD WEEK. All the tasty tasty comics featuring, involving, or instructing one how to make food. How about it?

For my first contribution, I offer some lovely recipes in comic form.

First, Hannah from Jill Thompson's wonderful all ages comic Scary Godmother will show us how to make a sammich.

Next, the author of the webcomic Friendly Hostility takes a moment to tell you all about empanadas.

I made those when a houseguest left behind some beer. Nobody in my house drinks beer. But, as it turns out, everybody eats empanadas.

Next, a short segment from a Naruto Kakashi/Iruka doujinshi scanlated by Attractive Fascinante, titled "Hibiki". Did you know that porn can be educational and satisfy non-sexual appetites as well as sexual? IT'S TRUE!

(Note: This particular segment not actually porny. Unless you have a cucumber kink. In which case, party on.)

Lastly, for now, a scene from Kinou Nani Tabeta (What Did You Eat Yesterday), by Fumi Yoshinaga, the mangaka singlehandedly responsible for at least five pounds worth of weight gain. In this scene: JAM!

....What the hell. I just had a turkey dinner a couple of hours ago. I cannot be hungry again.

(shakes fist) YOSHINAGAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Sigh. I am off to make some toast with jam. Happy snacking, y'all.

What's wrong with that? One without the other is just lonely.

???

Isn't that how most people have toast with jam? It's how I just had mine. Jammy things have to be spread with SOMETHING else, or the bread gets all soaked and gross.

I usually go with butter. Unless I'm in a peanut butter mood. Or I have some clotted cream. Mmm. Clotted cream. Damn, I wish I had me some clotted cream. Hey, I whipped some cream to go with berries for thanksgiving dessert, and I wonder what that would taste like with blackberry jam and OH GODDAMMIT.

(goes back upstairs for a second midnight snack)

... NO.

At home, it's either butter, or jam. But not both. D:

How about neither? I never eat anything on my toast(both because I don't eat butter/jam and because I like seeing the Hello Kitty face on it as I eat it).

Agreed.

I don't use jam (sometimes marmalade) but damn, you can't do both butter and jam.

Well, sometimes toast>butter>cheese>marmalade but that's a different beast.

You should try it. It's pretty darn good. They complement eachother's tastes quite nicely.

Weird it creeps you out. Here in France, it's almost compulsory.

Where I grew up (east coast Canada) it was the same. If you didn't, people thought you were weird.

I think you are confused about how to have jam on toast.

Yeah, sorry dude, but I think you're seriously in a minority there, whilst buttered toast is wonderful in and of itself, I'd never have jam on toast WITHOUT butter.

Blasphemous lieeeeeeeeeeeessssssssss. Butter adds to it the creamy texture! :O

I agree, jam is better without butter!

Agreed.

It's one or the other, people. Are you all Texans or something? Jeebus. Just because you can put everything on a piece of toast doesn't mean you should. It's this kind of slippery slope that led to the Goshdarnwich - http://twitpic.com/l4q7b

Yeah, that seems to be the customary way to do it, but I agree, it's pretty disgusting. Of course, I've banned butter from the breakfast table completely ages ago, for being absolutely taste- and pointless.

I can see banning butter for health reasons (I don't use it myself except for baking and a few rare recipes) but to say it doesn't do anything to the taste of food is to ignore centuries of cooking knowledge.

Surely taste is a subjective experience, though.

Using butter to bake is perfectly fine (and delicious!), but I'm inclined to think that people only started smearing butter on their bread to store up some fat for hard times. Sure, fat enhances taste, but I really get enough of that in my horrible, horrible diet, I really don't need to smear it on my toast in concentrated form too. :D

I've felt like a minority in feeling the same way... at least some people apparently agree!

I wonder if it's a regional thing. I personally do one or the other, but when I lived in England when I was a kid, it was toast -> butter -> whatever else on bread. Which tasted a little odd to me.

don't know if it was the area I lived in, or the time or what, but all my British friends were totally grossed out and had never heard of peanut butter and jelly. Even accounting for the jelly is actually jam in England thing. (Are we sure that we're all speaking the same language, here?)
