For randomness week, of course. This is from New Avengers #31.

This is great. I have to admit that it took a few moments for me to realize that Spidey was wearing the black suit.
Hooray! I'm a trendsetter!

Wonder if those are those zombie ninjas they always seem to have. You can threw a zillion of 'em at the good guys, and they can kill them without any remorse.

Not to mention, they go 'poof!' when they go UNCONSCIOUS rather than just killed. It's like they're balloons!

No mess, self-cleaning ninjas!

Shame Deadpool wasn't invited to the Ninja Tea Party. It would be Banter-City!

I have no idea why, but, "It's a ninja tea party" always makes me laugh. But I gotta say that it's nice to see someone banter back and forth with Spidey instead of being like, "WILL YOU SHUT UP" like most people do.

Seriously if that panel isn't a deliberate Superdictionary reference I will eat my hat. I don't even own a hat but I'll find a way to do it anyway, that's how sure I am that that was intentional.

But it's the ninja rule! If you have to face 50, they're gonna all be pushovers, however if you just have to face one, it's going to be the fight of your life!

While I like this page quite a bit - Ninjas! And Spidey! And Spidey with Ninjas! - I just don't get what they've done with poor Clint. I mean, yes, the whole Ronin thing is pretty cool and all - I like the costume - but this is HAWKEYE we're talking about here. Y'know? Hawkeye? The ARCHER? The guy who shoots arrows and knows how to fight but is NOT a martial artist but IS one of the greatest archers in the MU, and who USED to therefore have a variety of useful trick arrows on his person. Now he has, what, a vaulkting pole? A sword? Bleh. Give someone else the Ronin costume. I want my purple archer back.

It's not like there isn't any precedent. Clint's ditched the arrows before to become Goliath.

Well, yeah, but then he could grow real big and smash things - he didn't NEED any fighting experience beyond what he already had, which was not inconsiderable. As Ronin, he's basically billing himself as a modern-day samurai, which kinda comes out of nowhere - at least with the whole Goliath thing, he'd been around Giant-Man before and had a chance to think 'heyyyy - that whole 'growing big' thing looks like a real gas! If the arrow-slinging game ever gets old, maybe I should try that!' But martial artists have never featured heavily on the Avengers' roster.

Uhh, Panther, Cap, Mantis, Black Widow and Mockingbird come to mind off hand. The team's had plenty of martial artists on the team before, it's just that they usually brought another skill to the table.

Though that said, yeah Clint as Ronin is a terrible idea. Hawkeye's greatest skill will always be his marksman ship ability, not his skill at hand to hand combat.

OK, Mantis counts, and I guess Bobbi too, but the rest are simply good FIGHTERS, not martial artists specifically. They specialize in generalized rough-and-tumble, sock-'em-in-the-jaw-and-yell-'pop-goes-the-weasel' (sorry, I couldn't resist) sort of fighting rather than actual martial artists. I think of a martial artist as someone like, say, Iron Fist or Shang-Chi - someone who has been trained in a specific, advanced, usually Asian discipline of fighting arts. I'm not sure Cap was given any training at all, at any rate not in the martial arts - he was just given a quick jab with the Super-Soldier Serum, his muscles and reflexes and so forth were amped up to ten, and the rest came through experience. T'Challa blurs the line a little, as he was likely trained in how to fight as a boy, given that he would one day have to overcome the country's ten greatest warriors, etc., but I don't think there's any specific evidence that the Wakandans have any particularly advanced style of martial arts that they teach - it's more generalized learn-to-duck-the-punch sort of stuff. (By that reckoning, your average medieval footsoldier would have to be termed a martial artist.) Black Widow is... mmm, she's borderline, but I'd say, given that she largely depends on her 'Widow's Bite' in a battle, that she's more of a talented kickboxer than a direct martial artist. (Remember, as a spy, she would have largely been trained to AVOID conflict, not initiate it - get in, get out, don't let anyone see you.) They're subtle distinctions, but they matter - otherwise, Sylvester Stallone and the like have to be termed 'martial artists'.

So much motto.

I hate how Ronin takes away the creativity Clint has as Hawkeye. Some of my favorite Hawkeye moments are when his bow is broken or lost and he has to pull a MacGyver to create a new bow or think up different ways to use the trick arrows. It was always so cool and fun and it showed that while Clint might not be the smartest guy in Marvel he can be pretty damn clever.

Exactly. Hawkeye's pretty much the only archer in the MU, or at least the only one whose stuck around long enough to be recognized. Furthermore, he's pretty much definitively the BEST archer in the MU - , as you pointed out, he's good enough that even when his bow is broken, he can still use his arrows in combat. In contrast, there are at least a dozen or so ace martial artists in Marvel's stable of characters. Why take away the thing that makes Hawkeye unique and turn him into something generic?

Motto. I like Kate, but I still squeed like a mad thing when Clint took up her bow in Secret Invasion when she got injured in the big melee, because I was all "Glee, he's gonna be badass archer again!" Pity that squee turned out to be short-lived.

Haha, I must've made that same exact argument a dozen times on the Marvel Ultimate Alliance forums whenever someone suggests that Clint should be in the game as Ronin, not Hawkeye. And it's true. Not only are there a lot of martial artists and swordsman in Marvel but by comparison Clint as Ronin would look mediocre next to them. Clint has admitted in the past that when it comes to martial arts technique Bobbi outranks him and in Reunion she easily out-dueled him in the bo-staff which puts him as Ronin below her skill level. And not to disrespect Bobbi's skill because she is good but she's not Elektra good.

Compare that to Clint as Hawkeye being able to beat heavy hitters like She-Hulk and Abomination by himself and it's a no brainer which persona is better (for Clint).
