Blackest Night: #4 variant cover
There is no escaping the Blackest Night. Alternative coverto issue #4 is over at IGN.

In inner space, no one can hear you scream....

DC is doing an excellent job just raising up the horror factor.

That is a truly frightening image, paying homage to a lot of horror classics from back in the day.

Yup, that is deeply disturbing... Is that Ray or Ryan being the snackfood?

I think it's Ray.

I'm going to miss Ryan.

Definitely Ray...Ryan's costume has a noticeably different colour layout - most obvious, in this case, being the arms, which are red on Ryan's costume.

The original Atom. Of course, the character has been gone for almost fourteen years, so I can't blame you for not knowing who he was.

Personally I didn't even see the symbol there with it partially blocked by the webstie logo.

That's Al Pratt? He would have been my guess on a who-would-they-pick level, but I never would have known from the pic.

He is wearing what looks like an altered version of his second costume. Being a Golden Age nut that I am, I recognized it on sight.

I was only sure it was him since he's picking on Ray, but, yeah, he was pretty easy to pick out. (Though I think it's combining his two costumes - the cape and mask (albeit with holes) from the original, the not-bare chest and atom symbol from the second.)

This was me, and I meant Atom Smasher not the original. I now see that it is the GA Atom.

Short AND angry! And a professional wrestler, I think.

...

Is it wrong that I think that is, in fact, an awesome idea for a superhero?

look at the spot just below the Black Lantern's eye. It looks like it's got an angry ghost in it.

BLACKEST NIGHT #3 SPOILERS

So, uh, Gehanna died.
We lost Cassandra and she's being replaced with Steph.
And now Ryan is being replaced with Ray.

Anyone noticing something here?

DC are currently running headlong down nostalgia road with their eyes closed and their fingers in their ears?

Except as placeholders to keep the trademarks viable until they figure out a way to use the white ones again. John Stewart being a notable exception.

You'd think so, but it's also a mixed signal, then, that the Silver Age here, and in BLACKEST NIGHT SUPERMAN, is about to be et by the Golden Age.

The real message? GREATEST GENERATION MY ASS!

And then Ray shrinks down real far to avoid the teeth, ends up inside, and grows and blows Zombie Atom apart.

Let's see if I'm wrong. But eating the Atom seems actually like a pretty stupid thing to do, if you're something he doesn't mind killing.
