Marie's take on things
Here's the cover from NOT BRAND ECCH# 10, October 1968. It's worth taking a moment to study at the larger scale. Marie Severin's pencilling never appealed to be on straight strips -- it lacked solidity and any feeling of weight or impact. But her humorous art and little caricatures always made me smile. Check out her version of the Lizard (under Spider-Man's left arm), he's kinda endearing. There's a lot of good stuff here, from the Silver Surfer's shower cap to Aunt May looking bilious to Tony Stark hiding inside his armor.

Dude, if Ben had done that to my helmet while flailing, I'd turtle up inside my armor to protect my head, too.

If I has any, of course.</i>

I just noticed Black Bolt is cooking a hot dog on his tuning fork...

I like how the Human Torch is blowing smoke in Black Bolt's face. That kinda-sorta addresses a question - flame produces smoke, right? So if the Human Torch is surrounded by fire, why does that fire not produce any smoke?

Smoke just comes from the particles of stuff that doesn't burn cleanly though-- and what exactly is burning when Johnny's on fire anyway?

Oxygen, presumably.

So much about the Torch's flame is hard to rationalize. He used to be drawn aflame even in close quarters or inside a closed room where presumably he would use up oxygen quickly. Unless he's blazing really hot to make a point, he wasn't shown making people or objects cast shadows. He was seldom shown as making people uncomfortable even when he's standing right to them. And frankly, he'd be a terrifying sight. Unless you've spent a lot of time around him, seeing the Human Torch in person would trigger anyone's mental alarms. It's a man on fire, after all.

All that aside, the way he's blowing smoke in the face of Black Bolt (of all people to tease) really captures his wise-ass teenage punk characterization of the first few years.

Dr. Strange does not approve of such shenanigans.
