Rey ✦ Luke Skywalker
Rey runs into Luke having a drink after he talks to Leia PG Complete |
The last ten days or so had been very strange for Rey. First of all she had ended up slowly turning into a princess from a movie she’d never seen and Luke had turned into the man the princess fell in love with Luke. That might have been easy to brush off once they had come to their senses but there had been kissing. Quite a lot of kissing actually and Rey had no idea what to do with that. It wasn’t that she totally inexperienced, she’d made out with a few guys on Jakku but it was Jakku after all and there weren’t really that many people her age so it was not anything to write home about. This had been different and she had to say she’d liked it a lot better than she had at home. Was it because she was essentially another person or was it because of who she’d been kissing? That was what bothered her. Rey had never completely been at a point where he didn’t remember who she was or who Luke was so how much of it had been Kristoff and Anna and how much had been Luke and Rey? She knew she should talk to him about it but she had no idea where to begin so she’d been trying to avoid him as much as possible. Which he had no doubt noticed since he saw her every morning. She was slipping into the training room just as they got started and was the first one out the door when they were done. He’d noticed, ,she knew he had but he hadn’t said anything. Then Han and Leia had arrived which had startled her. She’d spoken to Han but not Leia as of yet. Seeing them young reminded her once more that she was not from their time, or if she was, it was from a good way into the future. It also reminded her that she knew things about their future life together, about their son, and about Luke. She wished there were someone she could talk to about this but she wasn’t sure who to trust. Han and Leia’s children from another timeline were here and were bound to know the story but would they tell their parents? Rey had no idea so she just tried to get through each day as best she could and not overthink things which was easier said than done. She was so intent on her thoughts and what she was doing at work that she didn’t even realize how late it was until she looked up and no one else was around. “Well,” she said, standing up and stretching. She was hungry and there wasn’t anything at home so she decided to stop at the pub and grab something on the way home. Changing out of her coveralls and into her regular clothes, she left the garage and made her way to Lightning Brew. After she’d ordered her food, she sat down at the bar and sensed a familiar presence. For a moment,, she thought about not turning to look but it wouldn’t do any good since she knew if she could sense him, he could sense her. The bartender brought her bag of food and she ordered a beer and then went to the table where Luke was sitting. “Want some company?” she asked. Luke would have sensed Rey’s presence before she spoke if he hadn’t been so lost in his own thoughts as he nursed the drink in front of him. Seeing Leia had been amazing, but he hadn’t been prepared for how far behind him she was. Having to tell her that Darth Vader was their father had brought the memories back for him. He’d made his peace with the darkness in his bloodline, but he could still remember the shock of first learning it and truthfully, he still carried some fear of what it could mean for his future. Looking up, he offered her a distracted smile and then nodded, gesturing to one of the empty seats. He was mildly surprised by the offer after the way she’d been avoiding her, but truthfully, it would be nice to have some company. “Please do,” he said. Rey sat down and studied him discreetly as she got her food out of the bag. She could tell something was bothering him and it didn’t take the Force to tell her that. The expression on his face say plenty. “Are you okay?” she asked after she’d taken a bite of her dinner. “You seem troubled.” Luke’s first instinct was to nod and say everything was fine, but he caught himself. Rey might technically be his student, but it was more than that. Whatever they were to one another in her time, here in Atlantis, she was a friend. At least, he hoped she was. Maybe if he was honest with himself, he hoped for more than that, even. “My sister - Leia -” He felt silly as he remembered she knew exactly who Leia was to him- “she’s from before me. I had the less than pleasant task of telling her the truth about our parentage. It [...] wasn’t easy.” She’d heard plenty of stories about Luke, his family, and the Jedi but she’d never known what was true and what wasn’t. In fact she hadn’t even believed that Luke was real until she and Finn had met Han, leading her eventually to Ach-To. This was not the Luke she’d met so briefly there but a completely different person. They had passed no words on the island but she could see the pain and loneliness on his face, and she wondered what had brought him there. The man she knew here was younger yes, but the haunted look was missing and while sometimes she got annoyed with him and thought he was far too serious, she was beginning to see another side of him. Since their adventures as Anna and Kristoff, he’d changed, they both had and she could see more of the man beneath the Jedi Master and she liked what she was seeing even if she wasn’t sure exactly how to handle that. “I’m sorry, Luke,” she said. “I can’t imagine that was a very easy conversation to have. Exactly how far behind you is she?” She didn’t appear to be a lot younger than Luke but that didn’t necessarily mean anything. “A couple of years,” he answered looking down as the liquid in his glass. “It’s not a lot of time, but it’s enough that she didn’t even know she was my sister, yet. It’s amazing what can happen in such a short time.” There was the son Leia and Han had just given birth to at home, too - his nephew - but he didn’t go into that just yet. “What about you, Rey of Jakku?” he asked. “What’s your family like?” Aside from the strangeness recently, most of their time together had been spent training. He hadn’t really gotten to know Rey, the person, yet. “I have no idea,” she said, taking a sip of her own drink. “My parents left me on Jakku when I was very young. The earliest memories I have are of being about five years old. One of the merchants sort of took care of me, he taught me how to search the wreckage of the ships that had crashed there during the battle of Jakku. I’d find things and he’d buy them and that’s how I ate. I was a scavenger and some days were better than others. I taught myself how to fly when I found a flight simulator. It was old but I repaired it and I kept it because I wanted to learn how to fly in case I ever had a chance to get off the planet.” she paused for a moment, thinking just how much she should tell him but he already knew that she’d met Han and Leia in the future so she should be safe. “I thought my parents would come back for me but they didn’t. I remember someone telling me they were coming back and I waited and marked off each day on the wall of the AT/AT that I had made a home in. I know that sounds pathetic but I was sure they’d be back. I was wrong.” she sighed. “Everything else was just lucky, I suppose. Finn crashed, I met him, we got off the planet in the Falcon and no I don’t know how it got there but it was in a junkyard. I have not told Han that or that I flew it so mum’s the word.” she managed a smile. “Long story short, he told us that all the things we’d believed were stories or legends were real. Including you. I found the lightsaber you lost at Cloud City and Leia sent me to give it to you and tell you to come back. As I told you, I have no idea why you were on Ach Two, or anything about you other than who you were and the things that Han and Leia told me. You didn’t say a word to me when I showed up, so I was a bit surprised that you actually had a voice.” she couldn’t help teasing him a little. “But that’s when I came here so I don’t know what happens after that. You might have tossed me in the ocean for all I know.” Luke listened patiently as Rey told him that small accounting of her life story. His heart went out to her when he heard the way she’d grown up and he reached out and touched her hand. Despite losing his own parents, Luke had never felt like an orphan because he’d had his aunt and uncle, he’d had family whether they’d been his parents or not. He could just imagine how lonely Rey’s life had been, waiting for someone to come back for her. “I’m sorry you had to go through all of that,” he said as he laced his fingers through hers and gave her hand a warm squeeze. Things had been awkward between them lately, but offering her some kind of comfort felt natural. She was surprised at the gesture but it felt nice and she returned it, not moving her hand, just letting it stay there. Rey was a tactile person perhaps because she had had no little of that in her life. It felt nice to touch and to be touched, to be connected to someone or something. “It’s all right. I wasn’t really unhappy, I didn’t know any better. With the simulator I could go wherever I wanted and I had my dreams. No one can take those away from you, your dreams might not come true but they’re yours.” That just made Luke like her more than he already did. It would be easy to be angry or bitter about being left behind, but here she was appreciating the life she’d had, perfectly happy with the way things had been. It was impressive, he thought. Rey had given him the simplest explanation that she could mostly because even she didn’t entirely understand what had happened in Maz’s cantina, how the lightsaber had somehow called to her and all that had happened after. There was also the fact that she didn’t want to tell him about his nephew. He’d no doubt blame himself and she didn’t believe that any of it was Luke’s fault. Something dark had claimed Ben Solo and who knew what it was? “You’re more incredible than you know, Rey of Jakku,” Luke told her, meeting her eyes for one long, serious moment. It felt like something shifted between them then, but he couldn’t have said what and soon more relaxed conversation took over as they were each brought another drink. He wouldn’t overanalyze it now. For the moment, Luke decided he would focus on enjoying the company of someone he hoped was becoming a friend. |
