Entry tags:godric gryffindor, rowena ravenclaw

WHO: Rowena Ravenclaw and Godric Gryffindor
WHEN: Monday afternoon
WHERE: Godric's cottage
WHAT: Rowena said she would visit and so she does

Although she could apparate or use a broomstick, Rowena enjoyed horseback riding when she could and therefore chose to travel in this fashion to Godric's cottage. With the help of a few charms, the journey was shortened and she also located her former colleague's home. It wasn't for nothing she was known as the cleverest witch of her age and all the years in the afterlife had only sharpened her skills beyond what they were in life. She also really appreciated not needing to use a wand.

Reining in her white stallion as the cottage came into view, Rowena sat and stared at it for a while. She was nervous, her stomach fluttering with butterflies and her hands clenching on the reins. Part of her was glad that she had finally taken the initiative to restore contact with her old friends, but another part was frightened. She had distanced herself from them and never shared the reasons behind her early death, was it at all possible to get back to the companionship they shared in life, before Salazar left? Or would the weight of their past life widen the rift?

With a sigh, Rowena forced herself to dismount and slid lightly from her side saddle, brushing at her long skirts and checking her headdress was immaculate before securing her horse. "Dithering about is not going to achieve anything," she muttered and with her head held high, Rowena advanced on the cottage. Would Godric look as she remembered him? She was younger in appearance than when he first met her, an ageless mid twenties. Raising her hand, she knocked. "Godric? Tis I, Rowena."

Godric sat at his rough wooden table, drew the blade of his eating knife over the small whetstone again, and then stopped as he heard the knock and the voice from beyond his door. He placed the knife back in its sheath, laying it beside the stone, and got up from his seat.

He did his best to ignore the flutter of birds in his gut as he walked to the door and opened it. Slytherin had said, when they had first spoken through the journals, that they could not ignore each other now that they knew they were both around. The same was true for Rowena as well. It was time to see whether their friendship had survived centuries of separation.

Steeling his resolve, he opened the door and blinked at his guest. She was truly a most fetching witch, younger than he remembered. But then again, he looked younger as well. He smiled warmly.

"Rowena!" He wanted to hug her, but settled for extending his hand to her, just in case she would not welcome that kind of intimate gesture. "Please, come in." He backed away from the door to allow her entry, then his eye caught the sight of the white stallion beyond. "Ah! I see you still enjoying riding. And a fine specimen he is, too."

He was babbling, he knew, but he could think of nothing else to do to try and ease the strange anxiety he felt.

Rowena froze when the door opened, her blue eyes wide and slightly startled. Even though she knew who she was coming to see, it was still a shock to see him after so long. Godric looked younger than when she knew him, but was clearly still the same man of action she remembered. Blinking, she pulled out of her stupor to smile back, a hesitant curve of lips that slowly broadened as her small hand slid into his. The impulse to fling her arms around him was strong, but the training to be a restrained, proper lady was still prevalent.

"Godric..." she stepped inside, her hand still in his, the butterflies in her stomach flapping frantically. How odd that she would feel more nervous meeting an old friend than when she was a girl of fourteen on her way to her wedding. His babble helped ease the nerves though, since she felt the need to put him at ease. "Yes, Albin is an excellent steed and an intelligent beast who understands me well," she glanced back at the stallion and then turned to Godric again. "Not even all these years in the afterlife has cured me of my love of riding, especially riding fast," Rowena's smile was mischievous. Riding at a gallop was not considered very ladylike during her lifetime.

Godric laughed. "Yes, indeed. I remember well." He let go of her hand and dashed forward to tidy up a seat for Rowena to sit on. "I have some bread and cheese if you are hungry. "

It felt odd, having her here after all this time. Where could they begin? "I hardly recognized you," he added nervously.

She swept her gaze around the interior of the cottage, which was vatly different from her own elegant home, but this didn't come as a surprise considering their backgrounds. "You have a comfortable home here," Rowena commented as she took a seat. "And I would be honoured to partake of bread with you," the ride had left her hungry anyway, but a lady never mentioned bodily functions.

Looking back at him, she laughed softly. "Understandable, dear Godric. I am ten years younger in appearance from when we first met. I do not understand why it is so, perhaps the afterlife is pandering to my vanity? Or alluding to some happy moment in my life?" Rowena lifted her shoulders in a graceful shrug and shook her head. "Despite all my years of wandering and seeking, I still do not have a clearer understanding of eternity and am starting to think we are not meant to," another little shrug and her head tilted slightly as she regarded him with searching eyes. "You are younger too, but I would have known you anywhere."

"T'is the hair," joked Godric as be placed a tray holding a round loaf of bread and a knife on the table in front of her. To it, he added a plate of cheese and a pair of wooden goblets. They were rough furnishings he knew, and far beneath the quality to which a lady like Rowena was accustomed, but he had never been one for finery.

"I have no idea why we look as we do here. When I duel . . . met with Slytherin, I found him to look as he did just before the Founding of Hogwarts, whilst I am at the age I was when I first met him." Godric took the seat across from Rowena and poured them both some ale from a small keg which stood beside the table. "I cannot say what governs the age we appear in this place. Though if anyone were to find the answer, t'would be you."

With dainty movements, Rowena broke off a slice of bread and chunk of cheese, which she further cut down to bite size before handing the knife to him. She caught the word 'duel' and her eyes narrowed slightly, but she didn't pounce immediately, storing the information away to use at a later point. "I have done some extensive research during my time here," she admitted. "But as yet many things elude me," the slight grimace that accompanied this confession showed her frustration. Rowena always hated not knowing, almost as much as she hated not being good at something. "However, with all eternity here then I will not give up my hope to find answers."

She paused to eat, chewing slowly and quietly, washing down the bread and cheese with some small sips of ale. "So, dear friend, what have you been doing here to occupy yourself? Apart from dueling with Salazar that is," she added with a sharp glance.

Godric sawed off a slab of cheese for himself and tore some bread from the loaf. He ate and watched her as she did the same. It was so wonderful to see her again, even if it felt a little awkward.

He tensed at the mention of his duel with Slytherin and bought himself some time to think of an answer by drinking some ale. He could not expect her to understand the animosity that had driven him to duel his former friend. "Much the same as I did in life," he finally said. "I hunt and travel the forests. Recently, I have met some of the newer dead and found some of them to be fine people to speak with." Thinking of Rose, he blushed slightly. "All in all, this place has turned out much the same as my mortal life had been before I first met Slytherin."

Using his own eating knife, he sliced a piece off the cheese and placed it in his mouth. "And you? Have you enjoyed the centuries here?"

The blush caught Rowena's keen eyes and one eyebrow quirked up, her lips curving slightly in amusement. She had read about the reference to a girl named Rose and was definitely curious, if only to assure herself that he was in no danger of being emotionally hurt by the girl. "The newer dead are indeed interesting and I hope to acquaint myself with more of them."

She was silent for a moment following his question, looking down at her cup and her pale reflection in the ale. "Sometimes," Rowena admitted finally. "In the beginning I was... lonely, having left you all so soon, and I searched for Helena," a shadow passed across her face at the mention of her wayward daughter. Although Rowena had concealed the worst of Helena's crimes against her, the others couldn't help knowing the difficulties she had with her child and how much Helena's abrupt departure had hurt. "But I couldn't find her anywhere."

Godric silently cursed himself for bringing up painful memories for his friend. How well he recalled the tension between mother and daughter, and it pained him to think that his insensitivity had reminded Rowena of what had surely been one of the most difficult parts of her life.

"It would seem that being here is no guarantee that families reunite," he said, trying to find something useful and appropriate to talk about. "Part of me wishes I was less a man of action and more a man of thought. Then I would be able to investigate the seeming randomness of this place."

He sipped his ale. There had to be some topic he could raise which would lighten the mood. "Now that I have spoken to you and to Slytherin, I wonder if I will have the chance to speak to Helga again. How odd that would be, the four of us together once more."

Rowena's mood did lift at the mention of her dear friend, Helga. For such completely different women they had been very close friends and Rowena admitted she did miss Helga's warm advice... and cooking. Smiling, she nodded before adding with a rueful look. "Indeed, and it would be lovely to have a homecooked meal from Helga's hands again since even the centuries here have not given me the talent to cook!" the inability of the cleverest witch of their age to do more than boil water was a long running source of amusement for others and embarrassment for Rowena.

Godric stopped himself from chuckling and grinned instead. "That wish I know all too well. I have had no woman to cook for me since I arrived here, and though I have done my best to keep myself from going hungry, nothing compares with Helga's talents in the kitchen."

His smile brightened as an idea came to him. "What do you say to us arranging some sort of meeting between the four of us, when and if Helga makes her presence known? T'would be good for us to come together once again, if only to break through any initial anxieties."

"An excellent idea!" Rowena clapped her hands together in a girlish gesture of delight, her smile broad and eyes bright. A snall voice in the back of her mind commented that there was a great potential for disaster here, but she pushed it aside. The very reason for announcing her presence was to put an end to her self imposed exile and make contact with her old friends. "And if Salazar decides to be difficult, well... I shall make sure he cannot refuse."

"I am glad to hear it!" said Godric. "He is most certainly not the type of wizard who would eagerly agree to such a meeting."Particularly considering what happened when he and I met, he added in his thoughts. It was the truth, and yet still after all these weeks since he had struck his former friend blind, Godric still had difficulty accepting his use of Dark Magic. "But I am certain you shall be able to convince him, if anyone can."
