A chance meeting
WHO: Neville and Luna
WHERE: Up in the mountains
WHAT: Neville and Luna run into each other while exploring...
COMPLETE: No

Neville sat down on a flat rock and pulled an apple out of his knapsack. He sat silently as he ate, looking out over the landscape happily. He had been exploring up in the mountains for almost two weeks now, and he had yet to see another person. Neville had packed up some camping supplies and was exploring the mountains of the afterlife, in search of magical plants. He had begun to miss his Mimbulus Mimbletonia that he had in life. It had grown quite large, by the time he died. He had planted it in his backyard and by the time he was in his sixties, it was as large as a tree. They were quite rare in life, but Neville was optimistic that this realm might be different.

So far, no luck, but he had seen quite an array of plants and was enjoying himself immensely. Neville finished his apple, and began burying the core into the dirt, knowing it would make it more fertile and help life to grow, when he heard a noise. Wary, as he knew there could be strange and dangerous creatures in the mountains, Neville stood up and look around, alert and cautious.

However, instead of a dangerous animal, it was Luna. Looking much as she had when they were in school, the girl was attired for a long hike in the woods. She didn't live too far from here, but had been chasing a Erkling through the forest. Although not a child, the high-pitched cackle worked on Luna well enough to have her leave her cottage and follow it.

True to form, though, she'd walked out barefoot, her long skirt protecting her ankles from the grass and thorns but the soles of her feet bare against the ground. She stopped short at the sight of Neville as the Erkling ran past, a delighted smile spreading over her face, even though her tone was calm, as if she'd been expecting this. "Hello, Neville."

He looked so much like he had in life! Except younger. Or older. And exactly the right age. Stepping towards him, her smile didn't fade, "I am glad to see you."

When Luna stepped into his line of sight, Neville nearly jumped back in shock. He couldn't have been more surprised if a dragon had appeared. A small elfish creature ran by, but Neville hardly noticed. He couldn't believe she was really here. Sure, he had communicated with her through his journal, and he knew she was here in the afterlife....

But after two weeks of seeing no one, and the years it had been since he had seen her....seeing her here, unexpectedly...one of the people he had missed the most...it was quite startling.

Luna, as always, looked nonplussed though. Neville couldn't help but smile in return.

"Luna!" he exclaimed joyfully. He enthusiastically grabbed her and pulled her into a hug. "Oh, I am glad to see you too! I didn't expect to run into you though! What are you doing in these mountains?"

Returning the hug warmly, Luna tried to peer around Neville as she explained, "I was chasing an Erkling. Did you see it, Neville? I think there might be an infestation here."

"Also," She added as she turned to point back over her shoulder, "I live here. In a cottage. It's quite nice."

Face tilted up, earrings made of flowers that kept trying to nibble at her hair toothlessly, she asked Neville, "Do you live here too?"

Embarrassed that he hadn't been paying attention to anything besides Luna, Neville blushed faintly. "Errr...I think I saw it....I'm not sure which way it went though..."

He looked around. "You live here? In the mountains? I live in a cottage too, but it's down in the countryside."

Neville watched Luna's earrings, amused. He had never met anyone quite like her.

"Why are you chasing an Erkling anyway? Don't they eat people?"

"Oh well. I expect that I will see it again some day." Luna commented mildly, not too fussed about the disappearance of the Erkling. She'd much rather talk to Neville anyway.

Turning, she pointed roughly in the direction that she'd come. "I live there. Would you like to see my cottage? I think it's only a little way away."

Luna was a bit vague on distances. But she didn't feel that it was too far. If she didn't get tired walking there and back, it wasn't 'far'. And Neville wasn't likely to get tired easily anyway.

"Erklings eat children, usually. And with all the people that have been turning into children, I thought that the Erklings might have been laying up a stock."

With a blink, reaching up to absently push her hair behind her ears, away from the earring-flowers that tried to nip at her fingers, Luna pointed out, "And I can't be eaten again."

Neville was glad that Luna didn't seem concerned with the Erkling. He would have been quite disappointed if she had left him to chase it.

"Oh, yes! I would love to!" Neville had traveled enough with Luna in the past to know what Luna considered "a little way away" could mean anything, but he didn't mind.

"Well, no, you can't die again, but is that really something you want to test?" Neville asked, rather perplexed.

"Wait, what did you say about people turning into children?"

"Come on, then." Serenely, Luna smiled at Neville before she turned and started making her way to her cottage, expecting him to follow her and keep pace quite easily. He always had been taller than her; his legs covered more ground.

Humming to herself, she picked her way over the ground, careful not to step on any sharp rocks or tree branches. "I don't think I would like to be eaten by an Erkling, but I do think I can defend myself. The last time one attacked a six-year-old, it was killed when the child hit it on the head with a collapsible cauldron."

Over her shoulder, she smiled at Neville, "So you see, I think that I could have taken care of myself if it had turned out to think I'd be a good dinner."

Holding the branch of a tree aside so that it wouldn't hit Neville as she passed, Luna explained placidly, "In the journals, some people have been talking about other people becoming children. It's quite strange."

Neville kept pace behind Luna just fine, but he wondered how she could walk over this rough terrain in her bare feet. He had worn a pair of hiking boots for his trip into the mountains and couldn't imagine walking over the rocks with nothing protecting the soles of his feet.

"That's terrible..." Neville never had children himself, but he felt quite a compassion for them. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to imply that you couldn't defend yourself..."

Ducking under the tree branch, Neville looked in Luna's eyes and felt that small flutter in his stomach that he often did in her presence. But as always, he ignored it. "Really? I haven't looked in my journal for a couple weeks now. I've been camping and exploring up here, and I didn't take it with me."

Luna was quite used to walking around barefoot. She'd had a lot of practice in school, and even after that, she'd often pottered around her garden with no shoes on. She liked the way the ground felt under the toes; her head in the clouds, she built castles in the air with a solid foundation of earth underneath her.

She had taken no offense from Neville's statement, and showed that with a smile, "Don't worry, Neville. All the children who write in their journals have someone pick them up later."

Still walking, holding her skirts up at midcalf for a moment so that they wouldn't get wet in the tiny stream that she splashed through, Luna thoughtfully stated, "I think Professors Snape and Lupin were two of the first children to be changed. Professor Snape is also now called the King of Groovy, but I'm not sure why. I expect he has a good reason for it though, don't you?"

Neville was so busy holding on to his pant legs so they wouldn't get wet as he wadded across the little stream, that he almost didn't notice what Luna had said.

"Wait a minute, what?" He said, when the words sunk in. "Professor Snape....as a child? The King of Groovy? Is he still a child?"

Neville couldn't help but smirk. Though he wished Professor Snape no serious harm, he wouldn't help but enjoy the fact that Snape would suffer from some severe embarrassment sometime in the near future.
