Who: Remus Lupin, Severus Snape, and later, Peter Pettigrew
What: Remus goes back to his old self.
When: January 12th
Rating: G?
Complete: No.

Remus woke up to aching joints and freezing feet. When he tried to cover his feet he realised that the covers and blankets were not big enough, and when he tried to roll over, he nearly fell off his bed. Gripping the edge of the bed with one sleepy hand, he tried rolling over the other side and promptly bumped his head against a wall. Disoriented, he thought that his bed was bigger than that.

He quickly shot up and was suddenly awake. Oh no, he thought, and sure enough, he was in a small room with two little beds on either side. He was sitting on one and from where he was he could now see and feel that the blankets covered only up to the skin a few inches above his ankles. He was also suddenly very aware that there was another presence in the room and that he really, really needed clothes. His little night clothes were now torn and hanging off his limbs.

He was staring at the black head poking out of the blankets when he tried to summon his clothes as quietly as he could. He worked fast, transfiguring and resizing his clothes and putting them on. His hand shook at the thought that Severus -Severus! - would wake up; confused though his memories may be, he remembered enough to know that he ought to be worried.

Severus shifted sightly in bed, vaguely aware that he was having the most brilliant dream ever. He was a king and there were people bowing to him and bringing him desserts all day and his mum didn't care if he spoiled his dinner and... there was a funny shifting noise... which woke him up enough to pull him grumpily out of his dream.

Bloody Remus. Why did he have to share a room?!

Not even fully awake yet, Severus frowned and moved his head, only to realise he'd gone to bed in his crown and it had fallen off in the night. It bumped his nose when he moved and turned to glare towards Remus' bed.

His eyes went wide as saucers as soon as he did, however. There was a man here and Remus was gone and... "AAAAAHHHHH! MUUUUUM! MUM! THERE'S A MAN HERE AND REMUS IS GONE!" he screamed, scrambling back on the bed until he was pressed to the wall, his covers drawn up over him as if he thought they might protect him.

Remus quickly cast a Silencio at the sound of Severus yelling. He scanned the room to check that the door was still closed and hoped that Eileen was not woken up, though Remus was not even aware he wanted to hide from her now that he was back to his old self.

"Severus," he said placatingly, holding up both hands and trying to appear as non-threatening as possible. "Please, relax. It's okay, it's just me. It is much too early to be waking your mother, don't you think?"

That didn't really help. Severus still had no idea who this man was, even if this man seemed to think Severus should know him. He didn't move, still pressed against the wall, his expression somewhere between wanting to cry, distructful, and fearful. "JUST YOU?! JUST YOU?! WHO ARE YOU?!"

"Er..." Right, Severus was screaming. He supposed he expected that, but it did not make it easier that he was doing so now. Remus considered lying and telling Severus he was dreaming or some other thing, but he never really did like lying to children.

"It's ah, me. Remus. It's strange, I know," he said, shaking his hand to calm whatever Severus' protests, "but I really am not here to hurt you. I'll be out in a moment, in fact, so don't mind me." He began summoning his other things to the bed, letting them settle down while he emptied the bag at the foot of his bed so he could have the clothes fold themselves properly.

Severus still didn't move and opened his mouth to tell Remus he was a liar when Remus waved his hand and forstalled his protest. The muddled emotions on Severus' face melted into one of suspicion.

The older man didn't appear threatening and he was just sitting ther packing up Remus' things. "That's impossible. You were just-- just yesterday you-- You can't be-- I NEED TO SEE SOME PROPER IDENTIFICATION!" he finally yelled. He'd seen it in one of those muggle crime movies Da liked so much and it seemed fitting now.

Remus stopped packing and sat down on the bed, facing Severus. "Well, it's not like I carry around an identification card," he said, amused. He couldn't remember hearing Severus yell so much, but if memory served correctly, he had heard the man-- boy, do so on a daily basis for the last week. He just knew the adult Severus would have a fit because of that. "You could ask me questions, I guess. I'm not certain if you noticed much about me, but i there is something you would like to see or hear, I'll see what I can do."

"Why not?! Mum and Da do!" he exclaimed. Although, Da was a Muggle and Mum lived like one most of the time. "You're not a Pure-blood either," he added, then wondered how on earth he knew that. He didn't remember asking the other boy, but he somehow was pretty sure it was the truth.

"Okay, fine," he said, narrowing his eyes. The older man hadn't done anything bad to him to stop his screaming... and why hadn't his mum come in? "Who did you keep going on and on about that you're scared of? And... what did you have for breakfast yesterday? And how many chocolates where in the box you gave me for my birthday? And what did Salazar give me for my birthday? And... what's your middle name? Your favourite type of tea?" Wait... did he even know those last two?

"I've been with you here so--" Of course, he found no need to run around with an identification card in this world. Besides, it was not as if children carry such things and he's been one for the past week. He didn't think saying those would help much with Severus though.

"Nevermind, I'll just answer your questions, all right? Let's see... I remember spending much of my time talking about werewolves. I think that was not quite what I called them but-- wolf men, was it? I don't quite remember breakfast, but I'm quite certain there were eggs." He grinned at the boy in front of him, letting him know that Remus knew he wasn't fooling anyone. "Some things are a bit unclear and breakfast, I'm afraid, is one of those. I remember taking four chocolates from my home, however," he remembered he searched for the biggest ones, "and Salazar Slytherin gave you an orb that changes colours. My middle name is John and I love Earl Grey tea."

Severus wasn't really sure about Remus until he mentioned his birthday present, and then he relaxed, dropping the "protective" covers to reveal he was wearing his kingly robes over his pajamas. For a moment he just stared at Remus, obviously surprised that it really was Remus, and then a second later he launched himself across the room and onto Remus' bed. Now that Remus was a grown up, he saw no reason to continue to dislike him. Adults were better than other kids.

He sat on his knees and stared at Remus. "You're old! You've got wrinkles and grey hair! Do you really live next door to my mum? Why? Do you fancy my mum? My Da's not here in this world, you know, and I don't like him anyway!"

Remus was busy staring at Severus' robes that he didn't expect the sudden movement. From nearly hostile dislike, it was surprising to have the other come to him on his own. Severus' words made him laugh though and he shifted so he was facing the young boy.

"We are the same age, for your information," he said, mouth still caught in a grin. "You're older by two months, even. I expect you'll be back to your old self as well soon enough, so I suggest you don't make comments about my hair and wrinkles. As for Eileen," he chuckled and shook his head, "we're really just friends. Grudging neighbour on her part, I suppose. Do you want me to fancy your mum?"

"You're thirty-- thirty eight?" That was what his mother had said, wasn't it? "No. No. I'm five. SIX! I'M SIX!" He bounced a little with the exclamation, then smiled at the older Remus. "I dunno. I expect if Mum was with a wizard, we would get to do magic a lot more often than we do like we do here." Severus paused for a moment, thoughtfully. Was he going to have to go back to Spinner's End? Remus was a wizard, right? Oh, yes. Yes, he was. Remus had hexed him back that once. "Sorry I hexed you," he said after a moment. Grown up Remus didn't seem half bad.

"You're six now and five a few days ago; next thing you know, you'll be my age in no time," Remus declared in jest. "We went to Hogwarts together, you know. That also makes it a bit difficult to be with your mum because she's supposed to be about my mum's age." He wondered why he was constantly pointed to women whose ages are so far from his.

"Besides, you don't need me to practice magic here, unless it is a teacher you want. I was a Defense professor for a time, which is why I would also like to apologise as well for seemingly hexing you back. I believe I had unknowingly cast a Protego barrier and your spell bounced off the shield. You are familiar with protection spells?"

"But she's not old!" Severus prtested... then re-thought. "Well, she is, just not as old as someone who could be your mum." Severus didn't even thnk on them being the same age, because they obviously weren't.

Severus shook his head at remus' question. "None of the other kids at school are wizards, so I don't need protection spells. Just hexes. And then they don't understand and it's funny." Severus grinned at Remus, hoping he would share in the joke.

"Ah, she is. She just doesn't look like it." Remus paused for a moment, wondering how to put things. "I could explain it to you, I suppose. I warn you it could be confusing, however, but you have the choice of having it explained to you or not. I never did like being told I was too young to understand something now that I remember it."

Remus was a little concerned that Severus was hexing Muggle children, but he wondered if raising the matter would help. He chose to let it go for now as he doubted Severus would be meeting any Muggles in this world to make the inevitable argument to be in any way relevant. "You will need protection spells in a proper Wizard Duel, though," he said instead, raising a finger to make a point. "Sometimes one might not know. Perhaps your opponent would know a great many hexes as well. You do not always need to know a lot of them, just those that work best in given situations."

Severus thought on having it explained, but decided he didn't really care. Things were what they were, after all. As a child, he never felt the need to know everything or control everything. That need to control had come later, after things started to fall apart at home, because it was the only thing he could control. "Don't care," he said finally. "It is what it is what it is," he added flopping back against the headboard.

"I don't think I'll ever be in a propper wizard's duel," he said. It was hard to imagine life beyong Spinner's End or that he would stay here for very long. Though, maybe protection spells would work when Da got angry. "Do those spells work against Muggles, too? Sometimes..." Da gets really mean, Severus thought, frowning now, but didn't finish.

Remus shrugged when Severus passed on the explanation. He was glad he was spared from having to explain something so long, although he would have done it anyway had he been asked.

Remus' eyebrows lifted at the comment about the wizard's duel. "I find it difficult to believe you were not in at least one duel in your life. I expect you would be good at it, too." Severus was on top of Remus' list of people not to have a life duel with. He may have had experience, but the last year of the war alone was enough to convince him dueling with the man would be detrimental to Remus' health.

"I haven't tried using protection spells on Muggles before, but I do not see why some of them shouldn't. Some spells would not allow close proximity, but there are charms especially for Muggles. You could make them turn away or forget things so they don't go anywhere you wouldn't want them to go." Remus was about to ask Severus what the question on Muggles was for, but the boy seemed to have cut himself off on his own. Remus chose to leave his words as they were.

"You've never had to protect yourself from Muggles?" Severus asked curiously. "Did you live in a wizarding neighborhood growing up?" It was hard to imagine life with Muggles and no fighting. All the kids at school thought he was strange. Da did too.

"So you could create a bary--" he paused, unsure of the word he was about to use. "Like a wall around you, or something?" He leaned forward again. Remus was nice as a grown up. He wasn't following his mum around and being all needy at least. Severus shifted, turned, and then flopped back so that he was laying down on his back with his head in Remus' lap, having to re-adjust his royal robes as he did. He used to sit like this with Da a while back.

"I lived close to a Muggle village when I was around your age, but I did not get to meet many people. I met some of the villagers, but never long enough to get to know them. When I graduated and started working, the protection spells I used were more of wards to keep Muggles away so they don't find out I am a wizard."

Remus was about to respond to the third question when Severus shifted and rested his head on Remus' lap, at which point Remus froze mid-speech. Severus was going to kill him.

He quietly took a deep breath and expelled it slowly, willing himself to relax. "A wall of a sort, yes," he affirmed, glad that his voice was steady. Severus was such a strange child, and here he was thinking he was completely disliked. Apparently the younger version of himself and the one that he was now became two different people.

"How come you didn't know them? You said you were homeschooled? Didn't you know anybody but your Mum and Da?" Severus knew plenty of people, even is he didn't want to.

Severus shifted a little so his head was in a more comfortable position of Remus' thigh, thne looked up at Remus expectantly. "Could you teach me? It might be useful. My Da... doesn't like it when I do magic. Even when I can't help it."

"My condition didn't allow me to be around people much." Remus hesitated for a moment before saying, "I became a werewolf when I was six. My family had to live near a forest so I could run during the full moons. When we were older, you brewed the Wolfsbane for me, which allowed me to keep my human mind even in wolf form."

Remus sighed while Severus squirmed about with him as a pillow. Somebody must be laughing out there while giving Severus even more ammunition to dislike Remus further. He waited for the other to settle down before speaking again, "I could teach you, if you stay long enough in this form." He regarded Severus for a moment, curious about what the boy was telling him about his father. He kept himself from asking though, and lightly tugged a small part of Severus' hair instead to get his attention. "I'd like to know about your dad, but it might not be wise to tell me things your older self wouldn't want me knowing."

"I bet it's cool being a werewolf!" Severus beamed up at Remus. "It's like a secret identity! Rawr!" He made a little clawing motion through the air and bared his teeth. "I'm going to be Batman, you know? And Gellert said I could even be a spy, but he told me I wasn't supposed to tell people I was a spy because then it wouldn't work out so well, so shhh," he hissed the last syllable, bringing his finger to his lips. Then he frowned a bit at the tug to his hair. "Why would I care if you knew about Da? He's just stupid, you know, and sometimes not very nice, but he'll get used to the magic. That's what mum says. He's just getting used to it."

Remus stifled a chuckle behind his fist. Severus was an adorable child, really, although that was not a thought he would easily be coerced to verbalise. "Your secret is safe with me," he said.

He then briefly wondered what Severus' father was like. Eileen never mentioned her husband, though she kept his name, so he could only hope that the man was not so bad. "Well, I wouldn't really know much about your dad, so maybe I'll just trust your mum's word on this one." He glanced at the half-packed items on the bed. He ran a hand down his face - he couldn't believe he slept on this bed for a week! How embarrassing, thinking about it again.

"I should go," he said a little after.

Remus started a bit at that and just blinked at Severus for a few seconds. "You have?" he asked, then quickly shook his head to clear his mind off the shock. He rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a little helpless now with that look of disappointment on Severus' face.

"About time," he half-joked, shifting to one side so he could face Severus, one leg tucked in front of him on the bed. "Your mum might not like having me around now that I'm grown up again." He doubted she adored having him around, period, but he thought an older him might be worse than a young one. "I'll leave her a note to spare us the awkwardness. And, well, it's not like I would really leave. I just live next door."

"Of course. You may come visit anytime." Remus waved a hand towards his things, sending the last few items inside the bag. He raised his eyebrows at Severus before standing up, then extended a hand to the young boy. "Thank you for sharing a room with me for the past week. All things considered, it really was really not so bad." He gave Severus a conspiratorial grin. All things considered indeed, with the fighting and the arguing. It was not so different than what he was used to from the other man, and he did remember moments when he had fun.

Severus stood, pursed his lips and frowned. "Wish you could have been like this the whole time." The past week had been a nightmare! If Remus hadn't been a kid, maybe it wouldn't have been.

He reached up and shook Remus' hand anyway. "You ought to be bowing or something, rather than shaking my hand," he informed Remus, then indicated his robes.

"Oh, I beg your pardon." Remus smiled, stepped back and gave Severus a knight's bow, his right fist pressed to his left chest. He hoped it would do, as it was the only bow he knew aside from the usual one, which he thought was not appropriate for a king.

Surely, the Severus he knew would balk at people bowing to him, doubting their sincerity, but it was difficult not to abide by what this Severus wished. One common trait of the young and the old, Remus thought. "Forgive me, as I am yet to be accustomed to your new title. I am more acquainted with the professor." He straightened himself and his robes, then met Severus' eyes again. "I need to be dismissed now. Proper form to ask permission."

Severus bowed in return, still unsure whether or not kings actually did that. He was about to ask what Remus was talking about. Professor? He was easily distracted, however, by the thought that he had the authority to dismiss someone.

He stood up at full height and tried to look as kingly as possible. "Very well," he said affecting a regal tone. "You're dismissed." It was difficult not to giggle, but he magaged. Barely.

It was still fairly early when Remus reached his cottage, and he was grateful for the early start as he was only beginning to realise the many things he should have done for the past week. He distinctly remember having a multitude of parchment on his desk-- and immediately groaned as he remembered what they were all for.

Wonderful. His library and university deadlines.

He was about to make his way to the front door when he heard a slight noise. His eyes quickly went to the door of the small library, where he thought the sound came from. He approached the other door, frowning as he noted that it was unlocked. He truly couldn't remember if it ought to be locked or not, but he supposed he ought to see how the library had been.

No one usually came by this early in the morning, so Peter was sitting idly in the chair behind the library desk. He thought a few days ago he might want to clear up the papers Moony had scattered, but he didn't want to lose them or mix them up, so he only sorted them into a neater pile.

He'd made himself coffe that he'd brought from home and tiwddled an unlit cigarette in his fingers, his usual morning smoke, as he walked towards the door. He could usually get away with sitting out front for a bit before anyone started to drop by. He didn't hear anyone approaching, and when he swung open the door, he froze. "Moo-- Remus." His eyes flashed over his friend's briefly before settling on the ground. "Er." Oh, now he really needed a cigarette. He stepped outside and lit it with a snap of his fingers, then rocked on the balls of his feet, wondering if he should apologise for seeing Moony as a kid or for even being here.

After a moment, he leaned back againt the wall and curled his fingers around his cup to warm them. He crossed his legs at the ankle, unconsciously affecting cool. "Hi," he said, and for all the fake calm, he still didn't look at Remus.

Remus surprised to see Peter come out of the library, and was just about to ask what he was doing there when he began to remember more and more of the events of the past few days. He remembered talking to Peter about his library, and that on the same day they worked together to keep the place open despite Remus' state.

It was then Remus swallowed his questions and merely nodded, though not without a small frown. "Good morning," he said, looking at the other for a moment before looking away. He couldn't say things were easy between them, not after their last meeting. They had not spoken of it again, nor had their dealings with each other progressed much after it.

He sighed. He supposed that he had more than enough proof that Peter meant no harm. He had more time to think on the matter after the last time they had spoken, and though it might take a while before all could be forgiven and forgotten, he could acknowledge that pasts can never be changed. It would have been unfair to cling to it as he could have done.

"Thank you for watching the place," he said after a moment's pause.

Peter took a long drag of his smoke and blew it into the air above his head, then inclined his head when Remus thanked him. He looked up at Remus from under his lashes, not quiet lifting his head. "Yer'welcome," he muttered, then scanned the horizon uncomfortably.

The last time he'd been here when Remus was an adult, Moony had yelled at him. Peter had only left confused, hurt, shocked... and, yes, angry. He didn't like that the only one of his former friends that hadn't teased him fairly regularly could be so cruel to him, and that nasty little voice in him that he didn't like very much had had a few things to say about that. He might've liked to simply never talked to Remus again, except that there was that other voice that told him that all the teasing had been true, that he was sort of worthless, and maybe he deserved to be yelled at.

That, and he'd always liked Remus a little too much. More than a half-blood werewolf had any right to be liked, but he couldn't help it. Moony was just special.

He shrugged a bit, realising he'd gotten lost in thought just then. "You couldn't exactly do it yourself, could you? I mean-- I'm sorry, if you don't want me to be here. I sh'probably be going, huh?"

Remus shrugged. "I suppose not. I had not even known I should have been working, although I was happy to know about it when I did." Even as a child, he had always loved reading. Being an only child had made him find things with which to amuse himself, and he found reading satisfied him enough to keep him entertained. Plus, he was quiet, which his mother liked.

He watched Peter for a moment, reflecting on his next words and wondering at the wisdom of them. Still, "Have you eaten?"

Peter felt a jolt of excitement and nervousness shoot through him at Remus' question, and he nearly dropped his coffee and cigarette. If he were better at this cool act, he might've been able to hide his surprise, but instead his head jerked toward Remus, though he didn't meet his eyes.

He didn't really trust his voice to speak, so he just shook his head sharply, then took another drag on his cigarette, wishing his hand didn't feel like it was trembling a little.

It seemed the proper thing to do, inviting someone who had done you a favour over for breakfast. Peter had, after all, been the one who extended help without Remus asking, unknowing of his own responsibilities as he was when he was around as a child. And somehow, he knew that the small library was fine, that his home was just as he left it. No mad fits that left things on his floor, no acts of vengeance unleashed while he was away.

It seemed, he was thinking more and more of Peter instead of Pettigrew, whom he had assumed, after everything, was capable of doing anything. Remus did not wish to reflect on it too much lest thinking more on the matter changed his mind, but he did wonder when he had begun to think that way about Peter.

"You may come inside the house for a while," he said. "I'll be preparing something, I suppose. I have not yet eaten either."

Peter finally looked up and met Remus' eyes, searching his face as if he wasn't sure he should trust such sudden generosity. After a moment, he said, "All right," and took one last drag off his smoke before vanishing it. He did another quick spell to get rid of the smoke smell in his clothes (he'd had to learn it in life because his mum would have gone berserk if she'd ever smelled it.

After a moment he stepped back inside ahead of Remus and looked back at him. "Are you sure? I-- I could help, if you need it."

"It's simple enough. I was thinking just bangers and eggs." And maybe some mushrooms, he thought. Remus tried to remember what Peter used to pick during breakfast at Hogwarts, but quickly stopped himself. "Perhaps-- you could help with tea," he said instead as he followed the other inside, closing the door behind himself.
