Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:eileen snape, remus lupin, salazar slytherin, severus snape

Who: Eileen Snape, Severus Snape, Remus Lupin, Salazar Slytherin
What: A visit per birthday boy's request
When: January 9
Rating: G
Complete: No.

Eileen remained seated as the two other inhabitants of her home continued to do... whatever it was that they were doing -- she grew tired of following their conversations in their journals, so she just opted to asking with whom they are speaking -- while also waiting for Master Slytherin's response. She expected Severus would see himself entitled to demand for things now that it was his birthday.

"I expect, if we are to be given permission to visit, that you will both behave yourself?" she asked the two.

Severus really didn't understand why that Remus boy had to come with them. It was bad enough they had to live together and share a room now, but it Severus' birthday! He thought he was entitled to go to a castle and see snakes and Remus was just unfairly lucky that his stupid grown up self lived next to his mum. He wondered if he could get away with decreeing that Remus wasn't allowed to have any fun today.

He glanced at his mother. Somehow, he doubted it.

"Yes, mum," he said, trying not to glare at the other boy too much. What if she changed her mind?

Eileen carefully watched her two wards, not at all sruprised that Severus was displeased that they had to bring Remus with them. It could not be helped, however, as she did not know with whom she could leave the boy. He did not particularly seem to do well with being left alone. She noticed that he was always within sight, but eventually she discovered that if was more because he wanted to keep her within his sight. On the times she could no longer stand being watched and told him so, he would leave and shift his attention to Severus, albeit at a distance. His obsession with his so-called "wolf people" would have been irritating had she not known what it was all about. Hopefully, she would not need to explain it to Severus.

She looked down at her own journal to note Master Slytherin's acquiescence. "We may go now," she said, rising. She led the two boys out of the house to Apparate them to where she knew stood Castle Slytherin.

Severus was pleased his mother didn't tell him to take his crown or cape off, but he debated about bringing his scepter or not. He decided to bring it. He was going to a castle and he was a king, after all. And maybe he could hit Remus with it when no one was looking.

He followed his mum outside and took her hand. A moment later they were standing in front of a real live castle! "WOW," he hissed. He forgot he hated Remus for a second and flashed the other boy an excited grin, then bounced up to the door and knocked with his sceptre.

The sound of the knock, magnified with a Charm he cast upon his workrooms when he was occupied to alert him of visitors, pulled Salazar from his concentration, and he lifted the object he had fashioned to inspect it.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A perfect sphere of Lepidolite. Smiling, Salazar slipped it into the hidden pocket of his cloak and carried it up the stairs to the castle's entrance. It was one of the two gifts he had for Severus, and he was quite pleased with his handiwork.

With a single clap, he opened the doors and smiled. There, clad it a crown and cape stood the young Severus Snape, grinning quite broadly. Mistress Snape stood several paces behind him with an unfamiliar boy, who must, if Salazar's memory served, be Remus Lupin.

He nodded to the both of them in turn, then placed his right hand against his chest and bowed with a little flourish towards Severus. "Hail," he said. "I am Salazar Slytherin. Please, enter and be welcome."

Severus' mouth dropped open for a moment at the appearance of the man in the doorway. He looked like a character from a fairy tale! He was dressed funny and he had funny hair and a funny beard!

But he was bowing to Severus! Severus got over the appearance pretty quickly at that, snapped his mouth shut and bowed in return, barely catching his crown before it fell off. Then he wondered if kings bowed in return or not. It didn't matter.

"Hi!" he said. He stepped inside, not waiting for his mum or Remus and looked around. "This is your house?" he asked, amazement obvious in his voice.

"Yes, it is," said Salazar. "Do you like it?"

It was hard to believe this child was the introverted young man he had met some months prior, more proof that much had happened during Severus' life to change him so profoundly. But Salazar did not all the course of his thoughts to take the smile from his face, and he looked past Severus to Remus and Eileen, and stretched out his hand towards them, bidding them to enter his home.

Severus had walked several paces past Salazar before he remembered he was in a strange place and really didn't know where he was. He'd been so excited by the castle, he'd forgotten safety. of course, his mother probably would have stopped him if it wasn't safe.

"It's awesome!" he exclaimed. "I want to live in a castle!" he added, turning to beam at Salazar and his mum in turn. His home, the one his mum said was his, had looked vaguely like a castle, but it was really small and simple, wasn't it? Nothing like this! "I'm a king, I should have a castle." Everyone had given him kingly things on his birthday. he almost wished he could have brought his throne. It would have looked very good here.

My son used to live in a castle, thought Eileen as she followed Severus with slower steps. She fondly watched his excitement in silence, though her thought had taken a slightly bitter turn. Only he grew tired of living there because the castle relied on him too much and gave back very little.

"We are grateful for your hospitality, Master Slytherin," was what she said out loud, bowing her head slightly as well.

"T'is my pleasure, Mistress Snape," he said, smiling a little at her, then turning his attention to Severus. "I have a gift for you, one I fashioned this morning, which I hope will please you." Withdrawing the lepidolite sphere from his cloak, he held it up in his hand. Immediately, it began to glow, casting a soft cloak of different coloured lights around the room. "The colours displayed will change, according to the season and the time of day," he remarked. He stopped the display, then handed the sphere to Severus. It shrunk down to a size to fit his hand, little more than a large marble. "It will grow as you do, so that when you are an adult, it shall be the size I held."

He looked at Remus. What a thoughtful, intelligent lad. He would have to seek him out when he was an adult again, for surely the adult Remus Lupin would prove and interesting conversationalist. He left Severus for a moment and approached Remus, stopping several paces in front of him. "I have a book for you on magical serpents." He slipped the book from the pocket in his robe and handed it to Remus. "Perhaps you might find it interesting?"

The book was written for older readers, but Salazar did not doubt the young boy would at least try to read it. It was also not as . . . flamboyant as Severus' gift, so there would hopefully be no cause for Severus to be jealous. He turned halfway towards Severus. "Would you both like to meet my friend, Ophion, now?"

Severus took his gift with plain amazement on his face, watching as it lit up again in his hand and wondering if he'd done that or Salazar. "Wow," he hissed, almost as if saying it too loudly would stop the spell, then glanced at his mum conspiratorily. Da would never allow him to have things like this for his birthday. The magic things were things they had to keep secret, but not in this world! It was almost too much! "Thank you!" he exclaimed finally, looking up at the funny looking man.

He frowned a bit and peered over at Remus when he was given a gift, though. First he gots to come to a castle because of Severus and now he was getting gifts on Severus' birthday. Maybe a snake would bite him.

That thought, along with the fact that Remus' gift was a lot more boring than his own, had him smirking softly to himself, and he turned his attention back to his gift, making it start and stop glowing every few seconds.

Remus took the offered book on instinct, shocked that he was getting something as well. He liked books very much though, and he had never read about magical serpents before and was only familiar with Muggle snakes. He felt guilty that he was getting something for Severus' birthday - he was already being as quiet as he could so the other boy won't complain so much - but he looked up and smiled at Salazar Slytherin. He really did appreciate the gift. "Thank you," he said, bowing again.

He hesitated at the question about Ophion. He would like to meet the snake, but he didn't know if Severus was interested in them, too. And it was Severus' day after all. "What do you want to do?" he directed the question at Severus.

Severus turned back to Remus at the questions, oddly pleased that Remus asked him what he wanted to do. It was only right on his birthday, after all. The little sphere in his hand stopped glowing went he looked away and he stuck it in his pocket and looked back to Salazar. "Yes! I like snakes! Well, I haven't really met any before, but I want to. Did you know that the Egyptians used to worship them?" he asked. He wasn't very good with history, but he remembered bits and pieces that he was interested in.

"No, I did not know that," Salazar lied, making sure his voice held the proper tone of amazement. "Thank you for telling me, Severus. Now, if you will all follow me, I shall introduce you to my friend, Ophion. He is a large serpent, but he is very anxious to meet you."

With a slow pace, he walked to the side door, opened it, and spelled it to stay open to admit his three visitors, proceeding towards his library with an even stride. I hope everything is in place, he thought as he came to a stop before the library's door.

Severus toddled along behind Salazar, looking over his shoulder to make sure his mum was behind him. Remus could get lost and never find his way out, for all he cared, but he needed his mum. "You're welcome! They did! Cle-- Cleopa--
Cleopatricia killed herself with an ass!" he added enthusiastically.

Severus bounced through the door and stopped at Slazar's feet when Salazar stopped, beaming up at him.

The corners of Salazar's mouth twitched as he struggled not to laugh at the mental image of Cleopatra VII, last of the Ptolemaic rulers, brought to her death by an ass, He reached down and touched Severus' shoulder, reminded once more of his son, Hadrian's own precocious nature when he'd been a boy.

"You are very smart, Severus, to know who she is." Reaching forward, he opened the library doors, glanced around, and grinned. "Shall we go meet Ophion?"

Coloured ribbons decorated the inside of the library in a festive rainbow of shades. The furniture had been pushed to the sides, and in the centre of the room stood a small square table upon which lay a honey cake on a silver platter, which, Salazar knew, had the words, "Happy Birthday, Severus," on its surface, spelled out in emerald and silver icing. Small serving plates were stacked beside it, along with eating utensils.

And a long, thin, rectangular box - Severus' second gift from Salazar.

Ophion raised his head from his perch and offered a greeting hiss, which Salazar returned before speaking to Severus again. "Ophion wants to know if you would like to meet him first, or if you would rather have a piece of cake."

"I know! My mum's smart, too!" Severus exclaimed. reaching out to pat Salazar's hand on his shoulder, just before the doors opened.

His jaw dropped. All this was for him?! He'd never had a birthday so big before! He really didn't have many friends and Spinner's End was never so exciting! Severus couldn't even speak for a moment. "All this is for me?!" he finally blurted, looking up at Salazar, his expression somewhere between excited and disbelieving, then looked to his mother for confirmation.

He was quickly distracted when Salazar started hissing though and he sort of thought that it should scare him. He stared at Salazar for a moment before looking at the snake. IT WAS HUGE! "I want to meet him!" he said quickly. "Is he an ass? Or is he some other sort of snake?"

"He is not an asp, though I have some asps here. They live in the cave behind my castle, along with other snakes," Salazar answered. "Ophion is a constrictor, an albino as well. Do you know what 'albino' means, Severus?" He walked over to the perch, draped Ophion over his shoulders, and walked back towards the boys.

"I have never understood why you humans form such strong emotional ties to your offspring," remarked Ophion.

"Do not forget, my friend, that human children take almost two decades to reach physical maturity. Ergo, they depend upon the adults around them to provide their necessities of life for much, much longer than other species. It makes perfect sense, then, that most adult humans would feel an . . . instinct to care for children. " Salazar stopped in front of Severus, and waved for Remus to approach as well. "This is Ophion, my friend."

Remus approached when he was invited, quietly excited at being able to see such a large snake up close. He stopped just a little behind Severus, looking up at Salazar and the light-coloured snake in awe. Everything else he saw were all brown. So this was the snake Salazar talked to him about!

"He is very beautiful," he couldn't help but say.

Severus ignored Remus completely, too focused on the snake in front of them and what Salazar had said. "No, I don't know that word," he said. That was a word he'd never heard before. "I know what a constrictor is, though," he said to make up for his lack of knowledge with the other word. "They squeeeeeeeeze things." Severus balled his hands into little fists in front of him and scrunched his face, clearly demonstrating both the squeezing with his hands and the effects of being squeezed with his expression. "Right?" he asked excitedly, going back to normal. "Why isn't he squeezing you? You could put him on Remus so I could see!" he teased, then laughed at his own joke.

Salazar arched his eyebrow and looked for Severus to Remus, wondering as to why Severus would suggest such a thing. Perhaps it was merely a child's teasing. Perhaps it was rooted in their shared mortal history. He chuckled. "You are quite correct, Severus. Constrictors squeeze their prey. And 'albino' comes from the Latin word for 'white.' It refers to the fact that he does not have the usual colour of a snake of his species. Ophion does not squeeze me, because I am neither food nor threat," he said, "and that is why he would not squeeze Remus either."

Ophion raised his head and looked from one boy to the other, hissing something at Salazar. "He is pleased to meet you both, and he wonders if you would like to have some cake now."

Severus was only mildly disappointed that the snake wouldn't squeeze Remus. He had been kidding, but it might have been interesting anyway.

He was about to ask Salazar if he could pet the snake when the snake (apparently) asked if he wanted cake. "Yes! Cakes! What kind of cake is it? Can I pet your snake?" he blurted. Too much excitement had his mind racing faster than his mouth.

Salazar asked Ophion if he would mind being touched, and listened to the hissed response before nodding. "He says you may, though I suggest you wait until after you have eaten," he said. "As for the type of cake, it is made with honey and almonds. My youngest son preferred it, and I hope you find it to your taste as well."

He walked over to the small table and served each of them a piece of cake and a goblet of pumpkin juice. He raised his goblet up, looking at Severus, "To happy times, and . . ." He looked at Remus. ". . . to new friends."

Sipping his juice to finish the toast, he wished that both boys would enjoy their time as children, for it must have been a blessing to be free of the burden of years.

Severus gave Remus a look. Ha! New friends?

It didn't last long though, as Severus lifted his glass with a flourish befitting a king and toasted Salazar. He took a bow and this time his crown fell off. "Oof!" He crouched down to put it back on, setting his cake on the floor for a moment and then performing an difficult balancing act of coming out of the crouched position without the crown falling back off or dropping his cake and pumpkin juice.

It was only after he was standing again and re-crowned that he took a sip of his juice, tucked the glass under his arm and took a bite of the cake. He grinned up at Salazar as he chewed. "It's really good!" he exclaimed, mouth partly full.

Merlin, more presents?! First he was kinged, then he was in a castle with a man who could talk to snakes eating cake, and now he had another present?! Severus could hardly believe it!

It was still hard to imagine he would be an adult any time soon, but he took the box anyway, placing his cup and plate on the table they'd come from. He beamed up at Slazar for a moment and then tore the box open with glee.

Salazar watched as Severus opened the box. "It is a ladle, made from the horn of a unicorn," he explained. "It is particularly useful for aiding in the brewing and decanting of antidotes."

Though it was not a gift suited to a child, he hoped the adult Severus, as a Potions Master, would enjoy it.

Severus turned it over in his hands. It wasn't particularly interesting, but it was probably very useful. And it was sort of cool because it was made out of Unicorn!

Eileen nodded at Severus, both in approval and in agreement to Salazar's words. "You excelled in the subject at school and became Master. You were the Potions Master of Hogwarts for quite some time," she said, eyeing the ladle.

Unicorn horn - such things were rare in life. Unicorn magic cannot be attained by poaching the said creatures and hunting them came with grave consequences. One had to be lucky to find unicorns that have fallen to have such items. "It is a most generous gift," she said to Salazar.

Somehow Severus' smile grew just to hear from his mum that he'd done so well with himself, then turned to beam at Salazar. "One worthy of his skill," said Salazar to Eileen. "I found the horn's owner, gravely injured, in the forests beyond some years ago. Fortunately, I had the potions and spells to tend to its wounds and spare it considerable pain and illness. As payment, it gave me its horn. It would, of course, regrow in this place I assume."

He looked at Severus and Remus. They were both wonderful lads in their own ways, although they were so very, very different. "Is there anything else you wish to do, Severus?"

Salazar smiled down at Severus and resisted the urge to give his tiny shoulder a little supportive squeeze. Perhaps the child was overwhelmed by it all. "Would you like to return home then to rest? Fond thoughts perhaps, as it was not everyday one could say they had been to Salazar Slytherin's castle, but she expected that such thoughts would have to come after Severus' mortification at being allowed to go around as a child. He would most likely blame her for it, even.

For now, however, she would remain to be the mother that her young son knew. "It is not something so easily forgotten," she said, her eyes on her son as she herded the two young boys close to her. She waited as both boys bid their farewell to their gracious host before stepping back so that they may be led out.
