If I'm doing this in the wrong place, I'm sorry but I've tried everything. Is there anyway to do the layout on this journal with the header but without the line going through it and worldwound mods on it?

I think the blue bar is #banner-description. It has a padding and what looks like that background color in the theme style sheet, so even though it's empty it's still showing its background.

The journal name is #banner-header.

So what you want to add to your css is:

#banner-header, #banner-description { display: none; }

That should take away both elements completely.
