Entry tags:brooms-and-boom, first-challenge

Characters; Brooms and BOOM
Date/Time; November 5; 12:00 PM
Where; Room of the Challenge
Warnings; ?
Status; incomplete

All the students were to be lined up in their respective teams and ready to face what they would be once the doors opened. Of course, each team was to go in team by team and wait until the previous team finished before the next team would enter. They were also told to be quiet so as to not accidentally assist a different team – though there would be no chances of slips, there was a competitive feel to the air.

The challenge would take place in one of the DADA classrooms, the largest one and currently both Headmistress McGonagall and Professor Longbottom was standing outside. The former faced the students with an impassive expression while the latter was giving encouraging smiles all around.

"Brooms and BOOM," the Headmistress announced, "it is now your team's turn to enter the room. I do hope you have all prepared. And good luck."

The room they were ushered into was dark, so dark in fact that they would need to provide their own source of lighting if they were to see more than three feet in front of them. There was also a dank, musty scent that was usually not found in the room, as well as a light breeze when supposedly there were no windows in the room. Now, what will the team do?

Libby muttered a quick spell and looked around at her teammates, "Okay girlies and boy now what?" she asked unsure of what to do next. She really wished that she were more the leadership type.

Lydia rolled her eyes lightly and lit her own wand, looking around a bit. She really couldn't see much, and it smelled kind of horrible, "It feels like we're outside, for Merlin's sake...in some really rank Quidditch lockers," she noted. She looked at her teammates, wondering just slightly if she would have to take the lead or what.

In response to Libby's question, Lydia looked at her rather blankly for a moment before saying, "Well, I suppose we'll take a few steps forward and hope something doesn't jump out and try to eat us," she suggested, moving in the front of the group and taking a few steps, peering around cautiously and moving the light around to see better. It was just...dark. And what on earth was that smell. It was almost familiar, but she coulndn't quite place it.

If Lydia continued forward, she would find the curious smell get stronger. It would resemble something akin to old mildew, mould or perhaps dirty socks after a long hard day playing quidditch. The mild breeze was coming stronger, and bringing more unfavourable scents with it. Specifically, it came from their left side and presumably whatever was causing the smells was also in that corner. To their right, or what can be seem on their right with the dim, flickering lighting of their wands, was a tunnel. Though tunnel was probably a weird word to use considering how tubular it seemed, particularly when there appeared to be growths of some sort on all sides.

It's a fork in their path, will they go investigate the left side where the smells are permeating from or will they continue right and into a tunnel whose end they cannot see with their wands?

Libby looked at her fellow team members, "I can't believe I'm saying this but I think we should follow the smell. The likelihood of it being one of the things we're supposed to encounter is too high for me to ignore."

Not that she wanted to follow the smell. She was used to odd odours because of her experiments but they were usually electronic scents. Something this organic kind of freaked her out. Plus the idea of walking into something that dark freaked her out more.

Ed nodded, scratching the back of his head. "I agree with Libby. I mean-- the tunnel is interesting, but probably goes on forever. Or maybe the smell is a red herring. It's certainly curious enough to be one. Although the breeze coming from that direction is also intriguing," he rambled, rubbing at his chin in thought. "On second thought, maybe the smell is to repel us from whatever might be in that corner." He paused. "Just a thought."

It really was curious, though. The smell was surely rancid, and the breeze wasn't helping, but it was definitely making Ed think. He doubted it was a potion-- usually they didn't smell so awful. It was more likely to be a plant, fungus, or animal.

"But I'd rather a red herring that we could potentially figure out than a dark dank possibly endless tunnel. Am I insane? Because if I'm out voted I'm okay with the tunnel that knows no end."

"I just wonder if we're meant to follow the smell, of it it's meant to make us take the other route. Either way, we'll go endlessly there," she pointed down the dark corridor, "and find something or have to come back. Or we go down with the smell and find something quicker, but everything is unknown. If we want to go after the smell, let's go after the smell," she sighed, taking a few steps toward the tunnel to the left and making an indication that they should follow and just have it be done with.

She couldn't see very far in front of her, so her steps were more tentative than usual, but the smell seemed to be getting stronger.

When they got closer, they would realize that said smell led them into a space that resembled someone's dirty attic. It was also several degrees lower in temperature compared to the entry room they were in before. The rank smells came from underground, as if someone had just hastily kicked dirt over cracked rotten eggs. In fact, the floor there was a dirt ground instead of the usual stone floors of the DADA classroom.

There were curtains and heavy drapery, and they seemed to be moving if there were supposedly windows behind them. The team would have to look behind to check if there really were windows. There also was a faint buzzing sound, like a muted colony of bees were above them.

Libby looked around, "That sounds almost like pixies or somesuch," Libby said absently as she tried to figure out if there were any clues in the room proper.
