Fireworks!

Characters: Autumn and Open for Everyone
Setting: The Courtyard, during the fireworks show

Autumn had tugged a spare sheet out of the wardrobe in her room, and dragged it out into the courtyard to sit on. She was lying on her back, staring up at the sky as the explosions of color were just starting to play out. It was absolutely beautiful, in a wonderful way.

She felt free today. Even if they were still technically locked up, she was still not free to live her own life and leave, she felt so much better than she ever had in prison. It was Independence Day, and there were even fireworks. Life was good.

Communal

Characters: Wu and OPEN TO ALL!
Setting: Cafeteria, 7 PM

With two tables pushed together as an improvised buffet serving, Wu was feeling proud of himself, as usual. He'd brought out steaming bowls of food and laid them near stacks of plates, bowls, and utensils for people to make use of, and from the pot of simple eggdrop soup to the brimming-over bowls of rice, beef stirfry and chicken gung bao, there was more than enough to go around.

Help from Caroline had made it an effortless thing to time all of the dishes out, and Wu had a feeling that if Carmel was half as proficient as she seemed, dessert would be no matter either. Settling at another table, Wu started to reroll his sleeves, eyes trained on the door as he waited and wondered if this was even going to work, or matter. If no one came? Well, he'd have a lot of leftovers to work on.

Blowing off some steam

Characters: Susanna and OPEN
Setting: Late afternoon, about 4PM, the Gym

After coming to the revelation that she was going to have to be far more friendly, Susanna decided that hiding away in her room would not be wise. And as it was, she wasn't particularly interested in being trapped in by four walls. What she wanted more than anything was to dance, but without the proper shoes, she would only be able to do so much. She figured that the Gym would be the best place to get in a good workout, blow off some steam, and perhaps do a few exercises that would be feasible without her shoes. She found a comfortable pair of sneakers, yoga capris, and a tank top, pulling her hair up in a smooth bun before crossing the relatively short distance from her room to the gym.

It was a fairly standard layout with the equipment you would expect to find in a gym, but Susanna ignored those for a moment, heading toward the empty space before she noticed a music station, detouring over it to turn on something loud with a strong, steady beat. She wasn't particularly picky about the music, it was just far more preferably than silence. She'd had enough of silence. Going back to the empty space, she started stretching, enjoying the pull in her muscles.

Chance of Boredom: Likely

Characters: Dominic and Carmel
Setting: the tool shed, late afternoon

Dominic had been walking around the perimeter of the first floor, noting, of course, the lack of windows looking outside. He guessed that was probably the wisest idea. Why give people a ready excuse to try and escape? Though that wasn't what was on his mind, really. He was far more interested in just seeing what the place had to offer. And what the hell was going to be put in tool shed in a place full of convicts.

Walking inside, he looked around, seeing a standard lawn mower, some gas cans, and an area full of new tools. There was a work bench there, he guessed just in case something needed fixing. He'd never done that much in the way of working with tools, but it seemed like something he might take up, if he was bored enough. Considering his glance at the layout of the place, that was edging towards 'highly likely'.

Leaving Oneself Open

Characters: Kyle and open!
Setting Courtyard, just outside the gym; around 2pm

Kyle was very happy with his morning's explorations. He was content that he'd found all the nooks and crannies of this place. Baring the idea of secret passageways, he figured he knew it all. The facility was surprisingly... bland, really. Nice, in it's own way. But sterile. Same-ish. It needed life, creativity. The lack of guards was a start in itself, but still - this place felt institutional, no matter how much they'd made cursory attempts otherwise.

Day one was not the time to start changing things though. That would come later, once he had had a chance to meet more people. Once he had gotten more of a feel for what would be wanted here. Or, at least, acceptable.

A kitchen, a kitchen, my kingdom for a kitchen

Characters: Carmel, OPEN
Setting: Kitchen, mid-morning (9-ish?)

Normally, Carmel would start exploring upon arriving somewhere new, at least warily, but she had to admit to herself if no one else that the transport had shaken her deeply. Though part of her was exhausted, a hidden spot in the deep of her belly still quivered with anxiety and she could feel the nightmares she would have tonight, even though it was early in the day. She hoped to God that she wouldn't wake everyone up screaming in terror tonight.

Because yes, that would be the way to start things out with a strange group of fellow criminals. Maybe she would just stay up all night.

So after looking over the map and making a quick post, trying to focus on the positive--there was a kitchen, by God, and she was going to use it!--she headed to said kitchen. Certainly there had to be coffee, and she was dying for cookies that didn't come premade. Her fingers itched for the feel of dough. Prison kitchens had nothing on real kitchens. Though she supposed this was still a prison kitchen, technically.

So, coffee and cookies. Once her hands stopped shaking from being bound and blindfolded--don't think about it, don't think about it--she would think about exploring this place more thoroughly.

Methodically she opened cabinet doors and started pulling out supplies from memory, starting a pot of coffee so she'd have some while she baked.

Habouring no illusions

Characters: Meg and Adam
Setting: The Library, Early Afternoon

It hadn’t been easy with her right wrist in plaster but Meg had managed to change out of her prison outfit and into some of the clothes that had been in the wardrobe. She hadn’t given up on the orange jumpsuit entirely though, tearing free the top half then removing the arms so it vaguely resembled a sleeveless jacket, albeit it one with ragged edges and the words ‘Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women’ printed on the back. Unlike some of the people living in this new place, she had no illusions about the fact that they were in fact still in prison and saw no reason to pretend otherwise.

That said she wasn’t above taking some small consolations from the relative freedom that came with her relocation like the way the orange of the jumpsuit clashed with the pale green stripes of her new tank top or that she had been able to walk into a kitchen and just grab a couple of candy bars before heading to check out the library. The thing she liked the most though was arguably the smallest; the cheap mood ring hugging the ring finger of her left hand which she was idly twisting with her thumb as she walked along next to the shelves seeing what books the library held.

a tentative friendship

Characters: Adam and Kyle
Setting: Midday, Second Floor

Kyle was nothing if not methodical in his investigation of the facility. He started on the ground floor and worked his way round from his room. Sure, he had a map, but seeing something drawn out on paper was not the same as experiencing it. He wanted to get a feel for this place that was going to be his home for an undefined length of time.

And yes, he was determined to try and think about this as ‘home’ rather than ‘prison’. He had tried that with every place he had been put since the day he had walked into the precinct and handed himself in for murder. Thinking about the walls didn’t help anything. This was his life now and he was determined to live it.

It took him several hours to go through the ground floor, during which time he saw others about, but didn’t actually talk to anyone. By the time he got to the second level, however, he was itching for some conversation.

The lay of the land

Characters: Matt
Setting: The second level hallway, mid-morning

Matt was pleased enough to find a map of the facility on his wall but it didn't contain nearly enough information for his purposes so he had printed off a second copy from the computer and set to work on it with a pack of pens he had collected from the activity room. The first step was to start assigning names to rooms, fairly easy given a number of his fellow residents had already put the information up in the journals, each with a small notation of any pertinent information that had been revealed so far. The two women who had commented on his journal, both of whom lived on his floor, had a mark put beside their names as persons of particular interest.

That really was just the beginning though, the truly important information could only come through walking around the facility; blind spots, places where he could watch from safely, vantage points. Slipping the map and a couple of pens into the pocket of his sweatshirt, he stepped out of his room and this time allowed himself to take a good look around. A small smile spread across his face as he realised that just standing outside his own door, he had an excellent view of the second level and through the window he could even see most of the courtyard.

Pulling out the map, he placed a small green circle on it beside his room and shook his head slightly in amazement as out of the corner of his eye he watched two girls begin to talk to each other under a tree in the courtyard. Recapping the pen with a satisfying click, he twiddled it between his fingers as he set off towards what the map described as the spiritual room - he could definitely get used to this place.

sunshine and fresh air

Characters: Reece and Cal
Setting: Courtyard, late morning
rating: pg

Reece didn't give two shits about the room. He'd looked around it, poked at the computer long enough to make the screen stop blinking then changed into real clothes, which were surprisingly close to what he'd worn five years before. What it was was a room, with doors and walls and that was the last thing he wanted. He'd spent five years behind walls, and the moment he was dressed, Reece was leaving the room, headed for the courtyard.

It was different than the prison yard, for a multitude of reasons. Sure it was still blocked off, but there was actual plants and not just stomped on somewhat grass. The sky could be seen and even the air seemed fresher. As a result he'd settled there, basking in the nice weather by sitting on the table part of a picnic table, feet on the bench. What he really needed was a cigarette, but he hadn't found that yet. Eventually.

Today Is Awesome!

Characters: Autumn and Mazie
Setting: Mid Morning, The Courtyard

Autumn had dinked around on the computer for a while, then gotten herself freshened up. Which was wonderful! She had clothes that weren't jumpsuits, and she had colors to choose from! Even if it was only seven outfits total, she was more than pleased with having clothes she could pick out herself.

In a bouncy mood, she'd opted to go exploring, and had immediately decided the courtyard laid out beneath her room was fabulous looking. So, she went there immediately, finding a tree to sit down beneath. She was smiling to herself, a content sort of mood overtaking her as she relaxed. Today was going to be a great day, she was sure of it.

Mazie would explore later. After a few minutes of roaming her hallway, Mazie found a staircase and started down it, on a mission to find the kitchen. She needed to stock her room up because she didn't plan on leaving it again once she got there. There was a beautiful, personal computer there waiting for her to come back and get to work. And she wasn't about to disappoint it.
