The Compass Foundation, founded by environmentalist and adventurer Walter Rutherford in the 1890s, has been a champion for nature and world culture since its conception. Rutherford's plan to bring sights and stories from around the world into the living rooms and onto the coffee tables of American households took shape in the form of Compass, a monthly magazine that was first published in 1907. In 1999 publication was reduced to a quarterly issue to focus on the expansion of the magazine's digital and multimedia presence.
