Mutation is the next step in human evolution. There is no known, definitive number of mutants living in the world today, and not all of them are obvious; many of them walk among the "baseline" humans completely undetected. They would prefer to remain anonymous due to hostility and fear, as many mutants have been the victims of hate crimes.

There are few places mutants can congregate and live among their kind. Charles Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters was one such place, as was its sister school, the Massachusetts Academy. Neither were publically billed as mutant havens yet many mutants found their way to these sanctuaries and were taken care of, taught to harness their abilities and flourish. They were taught that mutant/human relations were important if both groups were to ever co-exist.

But even as these mutants were taught the peaceful way, there were humans who felt the need for strength in numbers, banding together in groups such as the Friends of Humanity. Human on mutant crime was rarely prosecuted and, for the most part, silently condoned, as the human authorities felt somewhat powerless to stop super-humans.

In the wake of anti-mutant legislation introduced in the US Senate, the mutant known as Magneto took over the island nation of Genosha and, after overturning the government there, turns Genosha into a haven for mutantkind. Thousands flock to this paradise, where Magneto is the ultimate authority.

And then, in January 2008, a mysterious explosion destroyed Xavier's Institute. The headmaster and several residents were declared dead, and the rest scattered, most of the students there being transferred to the sister school in Boston run by Emma Frost.

Recently, after extensive reconstruction aided by Warren Worthington III, Xavier's Institute has been rebuilt and reopened. For unknown reasons, it is Logan who is now the headmaster and the leader of the X-Men, with the aid of Ororo Munroe.
