Lets Talk About Gif/Icon Chats verses Para/Threads and Characterization

Lets Talk About Gif/Icon Chats verses Para/Threads and Characterization

There's something I've been thinking about a lot in terms of Roleplay Games. This is specifically for Journal Platform Games and Tumblr Games--because while they have different styles and rules at times there are also similarities in play and, I believe, sometimes similar pitfalls. Perhaps the most troublesome thing I've had to learn how to manage, and I think others have as well, is the disconnect between Para/Threading (novel style responses) and Gif-Chats or Icon-Chats.

Before we get into the differences I want to define these two methods of conversation:

Paraing or Threading

the style of interacting through novel style writing. Its often, but not always, written in third person (past or present depends) and each writer focuses predominantly and mostly exclusively on their character.

Icon Chats

Chats on journal platforms often in first person--written as dialog or as written dictation with Icons used to convey tone or expression of the character. Example

Gif Chats

Chats on Tumblr often in first person--written as dialog or as written dictation with gifs included so that tone or expression of the character can be conveyed. Example

How to Nolanize a (comic) character: a few suggestions towards fiercly real RP characters

While this was originally written for the Gotham Falls game ([info]gotham_mod ), where the Nolanization of comic characters is quite relevant, I think it might be rather useful for anyone looking to write in a darker, gritty world filled with hardship.
There has been lots of tutorials posted here about how to write good, multi-layered, well-researched, soundly motivated characters. This addition deals with creating characters that have messed up lives and suffering from the the results of living in dark places.

CSS Transformations Cheat Sheet

While poking at Tumblr, I came across this link here, and thought it might be useful enough to share.

It's basically an animated cheat sheet for various transformations you can do with CSS. Most of them are pretty common, but it's a nice reference. Click each one to get a little box telling you the name of the transformation and the values used in the animation.

Firefox Aurora

I just discovered this in my web design II class, and after playing with it some, I have to post about it. This may not help everyone, but it can be a great asset for those of us who design or tweak layouts, or just play with any of those design or coding languages.

ONE WORD OF CAUTION: This is a pre-beta release, so it's not perfect and there will be bugs. If this bothers you, I would strongly recommend waiting.

Resized Screenshot of Welcome Page

Firefox Aurora is a recently-released pre-beta build of Firefox. It may not be interesting for general users, but for those of us who RP and play around with web design/development, this is a pretty awesome tool. Supposedly, Aurora is going to incorporate HTML5, which is beyond cool. It also has some awesome new features, like a 3D view of problem areas in your website/layout. Like so:

See a screenshot (and more about this really awesome new tool) below the link. )

Anyway, this was so cool I had to share. I hope somebody else finds it useful! (If this isn't appropriate here, I'll be more than happy to take it down. <3 I may also have overtagged, so please correct me if I did!)

EDIT: My server is performing maintenance, so the pictures got temporarily moved to Photobucket. They were resized by Photobucket, so when they go back to my server, the full-size images will be big again, I promise. Sorry to anyone else who couldn't see them because of the server issue! ):

This may have been the site I've seen the tutorial on, but I'm not sure. I know for a fact I overlooked it because I didn't think I would ever wanna use the code, but I saw it in someone's journal and I basically fell it love with it.

What I'm wondering: Is there a code somewhere that allows you to add a drop cap at the beginning of your paragraph? I found out how to do it in Word, but I'm afraid it will not copy over when I decide to paste the entry into my journal.

In advance, thank you so much for the help :)

Tabloid Template?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a tabloid/celeb gossip template for a newspaper article (think News of the World sort of thing) that needs to be posted about one of my characters. I've tried the Fodey Newspaper clip one, but it just doesn't allow me to post all the text I need. Has anyone else got any links or suggestions?  I've gone through the last 80 or so posts and the Resources section but couldn't find anything else.

Any help would be much loved!

Sarah TL;DRs: Temporary Characters and Unaffiliated

Note: This TL;DR is brought to you by [info]roadmaps. It was written in relation to writing Temporary or Unaffiliated characters in that particular Marauders AU Universe but I've been given the impression that it might be useful elsewhere particularly if a player is having trouble getting interaction for characters. The characters mentioned in detail in this post are my own. Temporary Character for the US Stevie Laurel [info]laurelluv, Temporary Character for the US Rueben Jones [info]hoodooblues, semi-Temp Petunia Dursley [info]petuney, Former Temporary/Now Perm Elena Kerr [info]crackthewall, and Perm Regulus Black [info]applefromvine. Also a mention of Leg's fabulous Temp-Turned-Perm Candy Reeser [info]bowerybitch and a big thanks to Fin who edited this mess!

Temporary Characters and Unaffiliated Characters: How to make them work in an Harry Potter Multi-Organization Game

I think people sometimes highly underestimate the challenge of a temporary or unaffiliated character. I’m putting both under this category because they both come with, in my humble opinion, similar pitfalls. For the temporary character—the player has a relatively short period to make them relevant and often few standard in-game connections. For the unaffiliated character, particularly ones who do not have standard canon, or in game pre-set connections, the character and player are inherently limited in the amount of posts they can respond and react to. Both of these types are, therefore, something that takes a little bit of effort to play.

Now, I won’t say I have always been successful playing temporary characters. I’ve failed multiple times in a hundred different ways—both in timing, how I decided to play a character, and my organization or lack thereof. However, I’m going to discuss here what I personally think helps make a temporary, or unaffiliated character, be able to lift off—however briefly. As I’m more intimately aware of them, I will be discussing my characters in each section as examples. It’s not because I don’t love other people characters but that I don’t know them quite as well. I’d love to hear other people’s takes, advice, and concepts.

These are my thoughts on <strike>Yaoi</strike> Temporary and Unaffiliated characters )

Astrology Links and Birthdate-selection

I'm an astrology nut.  Have been for longer than I can remember.  It's fun and harmless, and there's always lots of great ways to use it.

The past few years, I've used it as a way to help me determine birthdates for characters that don't have them when I need them.  Helps me come up with random personality traits I might not have otherwise thought of, and narrows down the date so I don't choose one at random.

Whether or not you actually believe in astrology, it's still fun to play around in, so I thought I'd write up a post of good sites to look at for various astrological/birth sign information.

Keep in mind, these sites have a tendency to disappear at random, so the links here are quite likely to just stop working.  If they do, let me know, and I'll try to find a better link, if one exists.

The Birthday Calculator: Not so much astrology, though it includes it, but random miscellanea about your date of birth.  Lots of random odd stuff here, but kind of fun to look through, and might inspire something you hadn't considered.

Hi there!

I just started at another MWPP game ([info]drainingmod), and the moderator there showed me this really nifty resource. I suggested to her that she should post it, but she doesn't have a permanent IJ, or she would have. So, I present you with LOCATIONWORKS. Location Works is a website that pretty much gives you every style of house ever, with photos of the inside, surrounding gardens, etc. This is really great for working out how your characters live. For example, here is a beach house. Here is a studio apartment. And, perhaps the best for HP players, HERE is an old-style cottage where a pureblood/rich character could absolutely live.

So, there you have it. http://locationworks.com!

[info]lace_and_cream

During discussion over at [info]flagstones it came up about the lack of fantasy icons and the like around the RP Community as a lot of people don't want to play outside the 'norm' even going as far as giving animals etc human faces. Therefore I have gone and made [info]fantasy_icons.

The aim of this community is to bring icons of dragons, fairies, hobbits, mermaids or whatever else you make to one place so that its easier to find. People can post to the community or link back to their icon comms/journals, I'm not all that fussed. I hope this comes in handy for you guys! I've started creating tags for the posts but I'll go through posts etc and tag them as necessary as well.

Enjoy!

COLOR

QUICK AND DIRTY COLOR TUTORIAL. Amazing color tutorial that explains which colors work best on which backgrounds.

LIST OF COLOR TOOLS. An incredibly thorough list althought the best tools (in my opinion) are listed below.

COLOR SCHEME DESIGNER. The best color resource in existence - and it's free! It allows you to do everything: lighten your scheme, darken it, add more contrast, see different text colors on top of your colors, points out warm and cool colors. Hell, it even has a page preview with multiple color options and an option for site schemes for those who are colorblind. Alternatively, you can use colordb (although it has a lot less options) or (if you find this all a bit complicated), try the resource below.

4069 COLOR WHEEL. One of the best and easiest ways to create a color scheme. Hover over the color wheel to view colors. When you pick one, click on it to choose a web-safe color. This color will be added to your color scheme near the bottom on the left side. When you select it, the square next to the color will also change. All the colors on this square will match the color you picked, allowing you to easily create a color scheme at the bottom.

COLOR PALETTE GENERATOR. Enter the URL of an image to get a color palette that matches the image. While helpful, it doesn't always bring up the best colors and you'll have to play with them. A good alternative can be found at Color Hunter.

COLOR SCHEMER ONLINE. Shows you which colors best match certain hex colors (that's the codes for colors -- you can find a list here. Say the Color Palette Generator didn't quite give you the right colors for what you're doing. What you can do is pick a color from your image (click where the green star indicates below and a box will pop up. The red arrow points to where the hex color is).

HEX COLOR LIST. A huge list of hex colors.

Color schemers can be found at... COLR | COLOURLOVERS | KULER

FREEWARE & SOFTWARE

PHOTOSHOP, PSP, and IMAGEREADY. Yes, those programs. Uploaded by [info]kaisermonkey. Just in case you want to go the more legal route, however, here are some cheap alternatives.

GIMP. A great easy to use and free alternative to photoshop.

FILZIP. A great alternative (or even replacement) for winzip when installing fonts and brushes or creating a zip file to upload multiple icons.

GDOCS. Fantastic for writing posts as it saves your post automatically as you write and allows two users to edit (or write in) the same document. Oh, and if you don't have gmail? What are you waiting for?

FIREFOX & ADD-ONS

FOXFIRE & ADD-ONS. Here you'll find the basics about the browser and a long list of (essential) add-ons to better your RP experience.

REMINDER FOX. An essential for mods. Great for reminders (like checking activity and holds).

FOXFIRE & ADD-ON35 ABSOLUTELY USELESS FIREFOX PLUGINS FOR WEBDESIGNERS. It's kind of like Christmas for web design geeks. Highlights include the following: window resizer (to see how it would look if you had a smaller screen), lorem ipsum generator, programs that let you see how the page looks in IE and Opera in your browser, firebug (that lets you click/highlight material and shows you what that effects) and CodeBurner (which integrates with it and gives you reference material!), an eye dropper (for selecting colors) that lets you use it in your browser, a code viewer that works like Firebug but easier (it hasn't been updated but there's another version here), a ruler to get the pixel width and height of any elements on a webpage, and even a tool that lets you find unused CSS selectors.

10 MUST HAVE FIREFOX EXTENSIONS FOR STUDENTS. If you're an RPer this is pretty handy. If you're a student (like most RPers) as well it's essential. Researching stuff for a game/character and have a billion tabs open? Well, Taboo lets you save and close them for later. Then, you could try Wired-Marker to make notes on and highlight the text on the pages (with different colors, boxes, underlines, etc). That's not to mention that it keeps a record of all the sites you've marked on. Maybe you need more info on something? Juice is a BAMF Firefox extension that can take any text on a page and automatically call up additional research information about that text.

40 USEFUL FIREFOX ADD-ONS FOR LIBRARIANS. PermaTabs lets you turn your tabs into permanent fixtures, which will open up each time you launch Firefox. There are webmail notifiers, Morning Coffee (which automatically opens up a different set of webpages in tabs for every day of the week, and a citation management tool.

IMAGE COORDINATOR TOOL. Helps you cordinate where to add multiple links to a picture. A green plus sign means add an area, red minus means remove the area. You can choose rectangle, circle, or polygon, and paste the links for each in. While it doesn't do everything (you need to rename, add titles if you want hover-text, etc.), it's incredibly helpful. Recommended by [info]igpayatinlay. It does assign a random number for the map's ID/name, and you have to add titles for the links manually, but it saves you time time rather than if you were doing it in paint or Image Ready.

HIDDEN TABLES. "The magic click". Shows you how to hide tables with CSS so that when you click a link a table pops up.

This community sorts PBs by fandoms, sex, race, eye color, hair color, character suggestions, age, general characteristics/features (glasses), and occupation suggestions (such as scientist).

FIND_ICONS. Here players can request icons of celebrities and stock images as well as find them through the tagging system.

MISC.

TINEYE. A handy little tool that will search the Internet for the same image in other places. So... you find that image that you must have for an icon, but it's too blurry, has text on it, too small, etc? Paste the URL into Tineye and it will find you other versions of the same image. There's also a firefox add-on here.

It's especially helpful if you're PBing a character from a previous historical period and aren't sure if the name you have in mind for said character would have been popular during their time period. It can also even be helpful in determining if you're trying to figure out if your modern character's name is too obscure and/or old-fashioned.

There are almost 3000 pictures, maps, and photographs to peruse. All of the images are public domain, so there are no worries about royalties or infringing, though he does request you credit the website and the original book source. It works exceptionally well for fairy tale and magical games.

USERNAMES & CUTS

LJ TOYBOX. This site generates fake LJ-cuts and usernames (so you can link up usernames on different sites but still appear to have used the lj user tag) as well as creates basic character profiles. Rec'd by [info]damosel

FAKE LINKS AND CUTS. Shows users how to change their username color and the graphic in front it as well as create a cut. Unlike LJ Toyboy, works universally (can show you to link a username on IJ, which isn't currently supported by LJ Toybox).

WORDIE. Wordie lets you make lists of words and phrases. Great for hunting down that perfect word for a username that might not be taken.

USERNAME GIVEAWAY. Here you can give away (not trade, not sell) usernames you haven't (and don't plan to) use on this community. Created before we realized [info]giveaways existed. Ours, however, has an option for giving away usernames anonymously.

TRADING SPACES. A community devoted to selling and trading usernames.

TRADE WARNINGS. Warns players about traders who haven't kept up their end of a deal.

GIVEAWAYS. Community devoted to the giving away of usernames. Discovered after

PURGED USERNAMES. That's right! IJ now has its own version of this handy feature. If you have money to blow, you can find some pretty awesome usernames here.
