TROUBLESHOOTING & FAQs

Skip to ... TABLES OR JOURNAL LAYOUTS OR S1 LAYOUTS OR MISC

TABLES

There's a GINORMOUS space in my layout that shouldn't be there.

There are two reasons for this:
  1. Pressing enter on IJ between two tables treats it like you've added another paragraph or break. Remove the lines/spaces between tables.

  2. You left out either out a tr or a td. Figure out where it belongs and add it back in.

My comments section is broken. Everything is centered.

Most likely, this is the result of having an unclosed DIV. Usually, just adding in a closing div ( </div> ) the following at the very end of the entry fixes it:

I can't get something to go to the top/middle/bottom of a cell.

In the TD tag, add valign="whatev" (the vertical align tag) replacing whatever with center, top, or bottom.

That would look like: <td valign="top">

JOURNAL LAYOUTS

I can't figure out how to do x thing with my layout.

Make sure you check through the memories of Everything LJ.

S1 LAYOUTS

I'm using a S1 layout. At the bottom of each entry where there are links to post comments and things, some of the options aren't showing up. How do I add these to my layout?

In your overrides under LASTN_TALK_LINKS and FRIENDS_TALK_LINKS you basically have a web address that pulls up the actual link.

I can't figure out what/where the problem in my layout is.
Use the firefox add-on firebug suggested by [info]fromamerica. Great for those 'How the hell did they do that?' moments or if you're coding a page/a layout and can't figure out what's causing a glitch. You can click on firebug and then highlight a word/section. Right clicking and selecting 'inspect element' will show you all the code effecting that particular element.

If you're trying to figure it out for a table: Cut rows out of your table -- in a different entry -- to pinpoint the problem. Change the background color of tables, TRs, and TDs to make editing tables easier (that way you can see what goes to what).

Also, look at layouts like it and compare your code to theirs. Which brings us to...

I could have sworn I'd saw ____ here...
DON'T PANIC. There are four ways to find what you're looking for here.

All the earliest stuff can be found in the layout directory and tutorials and resources. They're not up to date, however.

Tags. With the exception of what's on the first page of the community, everything should be always tagged. Great for finding layouts.

And what will never let you down: just go through the memories, located here. While what's on the first page might not all be there, they're otherwise totally up to date and it's SUPER easy to find everything there. In fact, they're the first place I suggest looking. For more information on the memories and to learn how to set up your own, you can go here.

How do I _____?
Try googling it first. I don't say this to be a smartass. I say this because it's how I figure most things for this community out. If you're looking for how to center an image, it's pretty easy to find something like that on google. The same is often true of layouts ("how do I change the date for an S1 generator layout?") - especially if you google how to do it on livejournal. If you're still having trouble, though, ask the community. That's what we're here for.

Someone posted a layout here. It messed up/isn't doing something right. What do I do?
Ask them. If you don't get a reply within a day or two (I know I'm awful about remembering to respond), ask the community. However, bear in mind with things more involved than tables (like journal layouts), most other users aren't going to want/be able to edit them without considerable effort because they didn't create it and have to figure out what goes to what.

Not a question but it is trouble. You need a dropbox, yo.

Something ugly is brewing here: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/rp_tutorials/285759.html?thread=2075711#t2075711

You may want to stop that shit like a boss or see what's what. Go forth your modliness. (FYI: autoincorrect called you moldiness behind your back. I set that shit straight)
