I think it's about half and half. I've seen it in some areas more than others--particularly when there's actively gif/icon chats AND Para/Threads. It seems that sometimes games are open to both but tend to side on one or the other rather than evenly both (for example, my first game roadmaps was open to threading but icon chats were 1,000x more common). When that happens, you see less of a disparity but you also might see some really cleaver ways players come up with to display their characters quirks through script like dialog and icons only.
