The city just didn't feel the same without the rest of them there. There were no phone calls at all times of the day telling him to come in, there was a case. Penelope wasn't knocking on his door with whatever strange thing she wanted to drag him to. Morgan didn't call, didn't check up on him. He missed them, he realized, more than he would have imagined. There were periods during his career with the BAU that he had pondered exploring other options, but when it came down to it, this place and these people were his family and his home. He couldn't turn his back on them.
All of that made their absence that much more felt, and it was with that in mind that Spencer decided that maybe it was best to explore some of these other worlds that he found himself surrounded by. He was feeling restless, an itch beneath his skin that he couldn't quite scratch, and he knew that he needed to be doing something before he went even crazier than he already was. And it wasn't as though he was leaving people behind here that he cared about.
Though that did make him wonder if, wherever they were, they were missing him.
Thoughts of alternate realities, while fascinating, always had a tendency to make his head spin, so Spencer tucked that thought into the proverbial back pocket and packed a few things from his apartment. A photo album. The book that Maeve had given him before that had ended so horribly. Several other books that he had read and re-read hundreds of times, had memorized in fact, but couldn't stand to leave behind. On top of all of that went a few items of clothing, vests, sweaters, the 'grandpa clothing' that the rest of the team liked to tease him about. The thought of them made him grin as he slung his bag over one shoulder and locked the door behind him.
Maybe they'd show up - eventually. But until then, he wouldn't sit idle any longer. He'd always had a mind for traveling, and, as they say, there was no time like the present.
