The warm July afternoon slowly slipped away as Stephanie and Eddie Nashton finally exchanged their I do’s and were pronounced husband and wife, and as guests arrived at the reception after the fact, dusk was beginning to settle. The setting was a community garden nearby the entertainment district in Old Gotham where the couple lived, and a rustic looking sign greeted them, pointing arrivals down a spiraling, mossy set of stone steps into the large garden below. It sprawled out before them, open space and messy plants that gave it a pretty, yet Gotham sort of flair to it. That messy sort of charm that was so much like the city that it just happened to blossom in the middle of. Fairylights and recycled lightbulbs twisted around tree branches and hung above a collection of tables underneath the huge American Yellowwoods. At the head of the table sat two chairs for the bride and groom, and a set of tables beyond had no assigned seats, guests encouraged to choose where they pleased. Hung on a post of each chair was a purple tag with fancy typeface that said: “Thank you for coming to share our special day with you. As our thanks, a donation has been made in your name to Gotham’s VA Hospital and Gotham General."
Beyond the collection of tables for dinner, purple tables and couches were scattered among the space, in corners for private time and close to the dancefloor for people who need to catch a breath of fresh air after shaking their groove thang. Purple and green bursts of color are everywhere the eye can see: the flowers, the tables, the cupcakes and cake pops and tiered wedding cake for dessert, the purple and green margaritas served as signature drinks among the other cocktails, liquors, wine and beer at the open bar. There was no doubt that this was Stephanie and Eddie’s party.
The newlyweds arrived a little later than expected, claiming to need to grab their matching sneakers from home, but no one really believed that, did they? There was rounds made, drinks gathered, and a simple, rustic dinner eaten before the party really began. The DJ served up an eclectic mix of tunes, from modern dance stuff to LCD Soundsystem to sappy, cheesy love songs that were meant for slow dancing. The first dance, of course, was something slow and sweet: Sparks by Coldplay. (Yes, Coldplay. Insert your 40-Year-Old Virgin jokes here.) Music played throughout the night, finger foods were passed around, drinks were copious, and a photographer circled around the garden to capture the good, the bad, and the ugly.
