[He takes the envelope, but doesn't open it until he's clear of the store and its security cameras.
As it turns out, that was a good idea.
He doesn't remember anything, necessarily, but he does nearly go blind from a rejection mechanism that hits with all the subtlety of a train. The heat behind his eyes makes him retch behind a dumpster. There is a ballet and slippers and guns, neatly paired together on a mahogany table and small, ratcheted iron fingers, on his wrist, like an automaton. And that's all, because digging any deeper is like pouring molten steel into his skull cavity.
He stays there for a while (it's comfortable on the ground) until a cop rolls around that evening and tries to roust him from his spot. There's no room for the homeless to lie around in alleys in New York, these days.
That's enough of that.
When he arrives at the bar, he's wearing the clothes. He's clean, and he shaved somewhere between morning and night. He could be any hipster with the long hair and green sneakers. He enters, taking the stairs up to his destination.
