[First, he checks the clothing. He feels the hem of the jeans, splits fabric with a knife and then carefully sews it closed again. He does a pretty neat job of it, once he's sure there's nothing in the clothes that can track him.
Then he visits the store. He isn't wearing the clothes - he brings them in a bag liberated from elsewhere. He tells a story to the man behind the counter, halting but earnest enough to be believed. He's in a bind, you see. The clothes were an anonymous gift from a girl, but he hasn't got a clue which one.
