A part of him suspected that leaving Gatsby was only temporary, that he would return to that place in the hope of one day reuniting with his lost siblings. Perhaps he would go back further, to the plantation, and the house that seemed so very empty once Chloe had gone. If Ashleigh had returned, was it not possible that they might one day prowl the halls of Passages. But these were only maybe's, half formed suspicions and thoughts, unattached to the reality of moving his presence from one door the other.
In Gatsby he left behind the house that had once been Jude's, for however long Armand and his pet might remain. Anger hoped that they would both be gone when he returned, but loneliness hoped that Armand would return after he'd worked out whatever vexed him now. They were both possibilities of the unknowable future.
Once he had calculated his future, machinated it until all the gears lined up in the order he wished to have them in. Now, it was nothing more than a steady stream of there. Tomorrow night he'd find some young woman to feed from, and the night after that, and the night after that, all far from Armand's eyes so he wouldn't complain about how Alex should feed on criminals instead. Was he not, technically, one of them? Had he not done enough in his life that others considered him reprehensible?
Would he not do them again?
He filled his pockets and a few pouches with gems, enough to start his life in the London that he sought out. He would need clothes. A tailor. A home.
A new name.
A history.
He had spoken of new beginnings to the woman on the journals. Would this offer one? Was there any reason to not make the attempt? No.
His well polished shoes made not a sound on the carpet as he wandered the hallways, checking doors until he found the one he desired. It smelled of London, and though he hadn't been there in years, he'd never forgotten the city that had been his home.
Alexander smiled and let the door fall shut behind him.
