He should have felt more nervous, instead of his trusted sword he carried the best staff like object he had been able to find. Ser Rodrik Cassel had taught him how to fight with a staff, particularly a staff that you created out of desperation, but Robb had always been better with the sword. A staff was better for this task though and the battle’s had never made him nervous.
Grey Wind had never been a threat to him not even during the thick of battle with the bloodlust running high for everyone and the confusion of the battlefield. Besides he owed this to the direwolf, because he wasn’t the only one who was going to die. The sudden attack that he faced had been a clamor that rose up from the seat of House Frey. He had ordered Grey Wind to be restrained for the celebration because of how agitated the direwolf had become. So the desperate warning that Grey Wind had tried to supply them had been the direwolf’s death sentence.
He wedged the lock of the cage with a small metal bar he carried and used leverage to break into the cage. He only opened the door a fraction though. Slid inside and used the metal bar to lock the door again. The deep warning growl had started the moment he approached the door but clearly, Grey Wind sensed an advantage. The direwolf did not rush the door but instead drew back to the other side of the cage. Robb had no doubt that Grey Wind was preparing to pounce as soon as he was a little deeper inside the cage. He had two maybe three steps of movement, just far enough that Grey Wind would be able to escape the cage when assistance was given. The direwolf might not even hurt him too badly, just rip off a limb and leave him very alive and in need of rescue.
One small step forward to test his theory, Grey Wind held himself perfectly still as Robb approached but the beast was watching him closely. Robb took a second more confident step very certain now the direwolf would either pounce for the arm that held the weapon or sweep his legs out from under him. He prepared to swing the staff in an arc that would protect that entire region as he took another confident step forward.
Halfway through the stride, Grey Wind lunged forward and Robb brought the staff around in the arc he had planned. The situation was not as good as he had hoped. The direwolf was fast and had aimed for his arm, the longest portion of his swing. They connected at nearly the same time and the impact of his staff was stalled slightly by connecting with the left paws first. The right paw was just biting into his arm when the staff connected with the direwolves temple. Robb threw all of his strength into the final momentum of the swing and turned Grey Wind against the side of cage for a second jarring impact. This was his only chance to wake him Robb tried to dash back towards the entrance but the impact hadn’t even taken the direwolf down.
Grey Wind snarled and then abruptly was silent. There stared at each other as the direwolf took quick deep breaths. Then slowly the direwolf approached and then sat in front of Robb and whined unhappily. “Don’t worry, we’re leaving now.” Quickly before someone could notice he opened the cage door and signaled Grey Wind to follow him closely.
