WHO: Claire Bennet and Sam Winchester
WHAT: Meeting up to discuss the recent episode of Supernatural.
WHEN: Right after this.
WHERE: The Activities Center
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress
NOTES: This post will contain massive spoilers for the most recently aired Supernatural episode 'Two Minutes to Midnight'. If you do not wish to be spoiled by what takes place, please don't read!

It had been beyond weird, watching that video. Weird and unsettling and a whole other mess of emotions that Claire wasn't even sure she could identify. By the time it was all said and done, however, she had a pretty good idea of what she'd just witnessed. Then she set about trying to figure out just how to tell it all to Sam.

It wasn't going to be easy. She couldn't imagine he was going to take much of the news very well. Then again, if he really was able to stop Lucifer, that would also mean he could fix his own mistakes and save the world rather than being responsible for its destruction. Personally Claire thought it was a pretty suck-filled destiny, but clearly in his world you played the cards you were dealt. And she wasn't so naive as to not realize that, sometimes, there were no easy fixes or simple answers. Sometimes, people had to make sacrifices for the greater good.

She just hated that it had to be him.

Making her way to the Activities Center, it wasn't until she was very nearly in front of the building that she realized she had even arrived. Sam seemed to be right. So far she hadn't encountered a single guest, save one. That, she decided, was good. She honestly wasn't sure how she would handle dealing with someone else right now. All of her focus was on Sam, and the news she needed to tell him, and worry that he wasn't going to take it very well. Which was partially why she had taken a quick detour and picked up a six pack of beer from the local grocery store.

Well, to be honest, that one guest she'd encountered had got the beer for her. She'd signed a picture he had of her as thanks, and promised to chat with him the next day when she was off-duty. She probably wouldn't have agreed to those terms, exactly, but she wanted the beer for Sam and the guest hadn't flirted with her once but had instead seemed rather intrigued about her insight into other events from her world. Weird, but she was quickly getting used to that much at least.

Reaching the doors of the building, she paused and glanced around. There wasn't any sign of anyone inside the building so she didn't bother trying the doors to see if they were unlocked. Instead she leaned lightly against the wall beside them, waiting for Sam to arrive or, if he was already there, to make his presence known.

"Bobby thought it was pretty great," Claire pointed out quietly. "He even told Crowley thanks. Which... seemed like a pretty big deal. And Castiel seems to be taking the whole thing pretty well. He had just enough... angel, or whatever you want to call it, to take out Pestilence." She cast a sideways glance at Sam. "Saved both you and Dean. Which, next time you two decide to take on the embodiment of disease? Do yourself a favor and, I don't know, carry shots of antibiotics or something. Because that was just..."

She stopped herself. She'd sworn, when she'd sat down to watch the show, that she wouldn't pass judgment over anything that might happen. The Sam that was here wasn't the Sam doing any of that stuff. It wasn't fair, to hold him accountable for any of it. But still. It had been a pretty dumb plan. And she knew all about dumb plans, thank you very much.

"Anyway," she continued, switching her train of thought. "Csatiel had a moment where he said he felt pretty useless. Only, he said it to Bobby. So there definitely wasn't much sympathy, which I think worked out better, really. And yeah, I learned about Adam. He, um..."

This was the tough part. The really serious stuff. With a sigh, she unscrewed the cap on her beer and took a drink. She might not be able to get drunk, but it gave her a few seconds to figure out how best to word what she had to say next. Her gaze went to the bottle, fingers picking absently at the label, as she spoke.

"You told Castiel about your plan to say yes to Lucifer. He said that he didn't think it was all that crazy, but that you needed to know a few things before you did it. One of them was that you'd have to drink way more demon blood than you ever had before. And the other..." Here it was. No backing out now. She swallowed and looked back to Sam.

"Adam is Michael's new vessel, Sam. Which means, if you do say yes and you can't get control long enough to jump... that showdown is going to happen and the world is going to end in the process."

"Um...yeah, that's a huge deal. Bobby thanking a demon..." Sam shook his head, because none of that even made any sense. Bobby selling his soul, Crowley doing something that seemed altruistic, Bobby thanking him...nothing in his world made sense.

When she explained that Castiel had taken Pestilence down, Sam had to smile. Three of four, then. Good. Sam relaxed and tilted his head back against the wall, pausing when Claire mentioned Bobby and Castiel talking about feeling useless. Sam had to laugh. "Yeah, that's about what happens when you ask Bobby to feel sympathy for you since he was stabbed," he shook his head. "Though, yeah, you're right. It's good that it happened that way. Cas needed to hear that hope isn't lost."

She mentioned Adam and Sam snapped to attention almost immediately. Claire mentioned Sam's plan and he nodded, but looked down when she mentioned the demon blood. "I was afraid of that, actually. I mean, I know that I'd do it if it came to it, but...I don't...I hate that it came to that," he said sadly. And his frown only grew when she mentioned that Adam was Michael's new vessel. "I was afraid of that, too..." he said quietly.

Claire's heart went out to him and, almost without thinking about it, she slid her hand along the wall and grasped one of his lightly. Squeezing it a bit, she turned so she was facing him. "Hey," she said softly, "look at me. Castiel isn't the only one that thinks you can do what you have to do, Sam, okay? By the time you and he and Bobby stopped the mass production of the Croatoan - I think that's what it was called?" She shook her head. It didn't matter. Back to her point. "Bobby was convinced you could do it too. And so am I. Not that my opinion matters much, I'm sure, but... you're not all darkness. You're a good man and, when push comes to shove, I know you'll do what's right. So does Castiel, and now Bobby."

She paused, then swallowed before adding, "And... Death knows it too. He pretty much said you were the only one who could stop Lucifer in fact. Even made Dean agree to let you, before he gave up his ring."

Okay. Probably not the best way she could have told him that part of things, but it was done now. All she could do was wait for his reaction while simultaneously trying to ignore the fact that she felt a little too comfortable holding his hand.

Feeling the warmth of a smaller hand encircling his, Sam couldn't help but smile a little bit. Her hands were soft. Gentle, too, and Sam felt more comfortable right away. Which was really strange, given the subject matter of the conversation. But, he supposed, it was amazing what a little human contact could do. That and Claire made him feel comfortable in general. He wouldn't let just anyone hold his hand nowadays, but he didn't want to ask her to stop.

So he didn't.

Sam turned his head toward her when Claire mentioned that Bobby had agreed that Sam could do it. Bobby hadn't believed in him in a long time, but even knowing, now that he wasn't there, that he had that back? Sam smiled a little more.

"Bobby believes in me again," he repeated, something of a statement to make himself believe it, too, and it made him smile a little more. "Good. Never thought I'd see that happen," he confessed softly.

Nodding, Sam bit his lip and breathed a sigh of relief. Everyone at home thought he could do this. He knew that it was pretty much all he needed to actually do it. Even Death. When he g-wait. "He gave Dean his ring? Like...just took it off his finger and gave it to him? Just like that?" he asked.

Things like that didn't happen in his world.

It wasn't fair that Sam's relief and happiness had to be tempered by what had apparently been a very unusual occurrence. Granted Claire understood that most entities who were evil didn't typically act the way Death had but... she honestly didn't think Death really was evil. He was just Death. As old as God, possibly older - and she was still having a hard time wrapping her brain around that - and pretty much fed up with being Satan's lapdog. Could anyone really blame him? The guy was someday going to reap God himself, and he was spending his time wiping out cities just because Lucifer said so.

Not that she was going to share her opinions on the matter right here and now. She was there to tell Sam what had happened, not go off on some tangent about how everyone really was giving a freaking Horseman a bad rep. So she simply nodded, biting absently at her lip before replying.

"Well, first he gave him some pizza. Then they talked. Apparently, Death isn't all that happy with Lucifer keeping him on a chain. So he told Dean he'd tell him how to re-trap Lucifer and would hand over the ring, but that you were the one who had to make Lucifer jump. You were the only one who could. He didn't think so, he knew so. And Dean had to agree." She paused again and swallowed.

"So Dean did and Death handed over the ring and what he called the instruction manual. Then later, Dean told Bobby he'd lied and wasn't about to let you do it." She sighed softly. "Which is when Bobby went to bat for you." Her brow furrowed a little.

"And that's pretty much how it ended."

Sam thought about it for a second when Dean said he wasn't going to let Sam do it. Yeah, that was Dean, all right. It's funny, because he used to think that it was because Dean didn't want to lose him. Now, though he knew. Dean didn't believe in him anymore. No matter who else did. And it was funny, because Dean's belief in him was really what mattered most of all. It was, however, nice to hear that Bobby believed in him again. Nice, but not Dean.

"So, that's what's gonna happen, hm? I'm gonna, like..." he didn't need to say it. Claire knew now. There were many ways Sam could look at this. He could look at is as a crappy fate that wasn't fair, or he could look at it realistically. He'd fucked up. Let Lucifer out of his cage and let him roam the world. It was his redemption, in a way. He knew that it was right. That it was what he had to do.

He shrugged, trying to think pragmatically. "I guess there's no other way that it could have gone, though," he said softly. "I was 'the chosen one.' So..."

Part of him wished that, maybe, Dean hadn't traded his soul for Sam back then. Maybe then, he wouldn't have to do this. Maybe it would be Jake. But at the same time, Jake wouldn't have been able to handle it, he figured. So Michael would have to fight Lucifer and the world would be destroyed. Sam bit his lip. This really was how it had to be.

"At least I'll be doing the right thing for the first time in ages," he said simply.

It wasn't fair. It just plain wasn't fair. Yes, Claire knew that life wasn't fair. She knew that her idealistic views of the world were just that. A pipe dream that was nice to think about but never really worked out that way. However some part of her - the part that was still filled with hope and refused to let the harsh reality of life completely destroy that hope - was all but screaming at just how wrong it was. Sam felt bad for what he'd done. He wanted to make amends. He admitted his mistakes and took full responsibility for his actions. Even more so than he was probably responsible for, really. Yet he still had to do this horrible thing that might end badly anyway. He had to do something that no one should have to do and because why? Because it had been decided eons before that that's how it was? Whatever happened to free will? Whatever happened to a kind, caring, loving God who helped people through their problems no matter how big?

She knew she was being ridiculous. Getting angry at God wasn't going to change anything. Hell, getting angry period wasn't going to change anything. But she couldn't help it. Here she was, someone who couldn't die, who could probably help in some way in Sam's reality, and all she could do was sit back and watch - literally just watch - as life dealt someone she considered a friend a hand that wasn't only unfairly stacked but was like holding a bunch of Uno cards when you were playing poker.

"You've been doing the right thing, from what I can see," she finally spoke. Her forehead was creased, eyebrows drawn together as she peered up at him. His hand felt warm against hers. A way to center herself, remind herself that he was still here and wasn't going through all of the stuff back home. Thank God for small favors, apparently.

"And yeah. Based on the... I don't know, previews or whatever, that's what you're going to do." Her stomach churned at what she'd seen and she ducked her gaze. All but giving herself away that she hadn't liked what was coming next week, yet she couldn't help it. "You... um... you're having this conversation with yourself in the mirror, after you said yes. Then you were facing off with Dean." A really beaten up, bloody, and half-dead looking Dean.

No way in his world, hers, or this one was she going to tell him that, though.

Looking back up at him, Claire tried to find some words that would help. Something. Anything. However she knew there wasn't anything she really could say. 'Sorry you're going to have to trap yourself in eternal torment just to save the world' really didn't cut it.

"He's not going to leave you there," she finally stated. "Dean, I mean. And Castiel. Bobby. None of them are going to leave you there to rot, Sam. They'll figure out a way." She didn't know that for sure. No one really knew that for sure. But she had to hope because, if not, what the hell was the point?

She looked at him, concern on her face, and Sam realized that it was the first time in a long time that someone had actually been just concerned for him. It was always concern and latent resentment. Or concern and latent fear. Or concern and latent...whatever. Always latent something. But with Claire, it was...it was concern. Plain old concern and Sam felt a bit of relief, however foreign the feeling was, wash over him.

She said 'facing off with Dean,' and had Claire not mentioned that Adam was Michael's vessel, Sam would have been worried. Now, though, he was scared. If he had already said yes, and was facing off with Dean? What was he going to do to Dean? Just the thought made Sam's stomach lurch. Smoothing a hand through his hair, he turned and looked at her.

"Thanks," he said, turning her toward him and hugging her tightly. "I mean, really. I know it was tamer than most pieces of my life, but...it would have been hard to watch. And...if you need me to do the same thing for you? I'll do it," he said with a kind smile. It was the least he could do. He slowly released her from the hug, but didn't let go of her hand right away.

"Did you want to go home right away? Or do you want to sit on the steps there and just relax for a little while?" he asked her softly.

He didn't really want to be alone, but if Claire didn't want to be there, he wasn't going to make her. Not that he thought, even for a second, that he could make her. Claire was an independent girl. Sam had gathered that much. But he enjoyed her company, which was saying something.

"I might just take you up on that," she stated in reference to his offer to watch the videos of her life. "I guess we're... off season or something right now, since there haven't been any new ones, but considering the state things were in when I left, I'm not sure I'll be able to sit through it all once they start up again." There was a touch of worry that they'd never start up again, but she pushed that aside for now. Instead she focused on his next question.

What Claire really wanted to do, truth be told, was keep on hugging him until her overwhelming desire to cry had passed. However not only would that be a little intrusive, but she also wasn't sure just when that urge was going to leave her. If ever, really. Still mentally bemoaning the unfairness of it all, she took a second to snap herself out of it and make her decision. And although her heart still felt as though it was breaking, she offered him a small smile.

"Well, I have beer, it's a nice night, and no offense to my roommates but... I think I'd rather stay here, with you." The last bit was spoken almost shyly as she peered up at him through her lashes and worried that she might have overstepped some sort of boundary by saying it. Unwilling to look at him in case that was precisely what she'd done, she moved to the steps and sat down.

Then she changed another glance up at him and patted the spot beside her.

"Off season..." he had to laugh at that. "I wish the off-season actually extended to home, because let me tell you, I could have used four or five of those off-seasons..." he smirked bitterly. "But yeah, when the new one start up, I'll definitely do that for you," he said.

Sam smiled when she looked at him. She really was pretty. The type of pretty that every guy back at home would be jealous of. And she had one of those smiles that it was hard not to reciprocate. Or at least try to. It was an odd thing to be thinking at a time like this, hearing what he'd just heard but Sam was a guy, after all. That and Claire had been there for him in ways that no one else had, and they barely knew each other. So that was saying something.

She said that she wanted to stay there with him, and Sam was glad it was dark, because he felt his cheeks heating up a little bit. That wasn't to say he was shy, but he hadn't expected it, and it took him off guard. "You know the way to a guy's heart, there, Claire," Sam grinned and winked, following her over to the steps. It wasn't until then, however, that he realized how weird that must have sounded, and if she was the type of girl who was put off by comments like that, he would have looked like the biggest tool this side of Dean when he flirted. So, he could only hope.

He sat beside her. Close enough, but not too close. He didn't want to weird her out or anything. "Can you imagine actually living in a world like this?" he asked quietly, grabbing a beer and twisting it open. "I mean, without the psycho fans and knowledge that we're characters and everything, but where everything seems...normal? For the most part?"

Claire's smile was both sincere and sweet as Sam sat down beside her. Taking a drink off her own beer, she glanced out at the area in front of them as he spoke. She considered his words as she swallowed, then looked over at him. "Honestly?" she replied. She shook her head. "Not really. I mean, it's great and everything, but I think after a while I'd almost get bored."

She frowned a bit and flashed him a slightly self-deprecating grin. "That probably sounds a little crazy, huh? I mean, here I am, the girl that so desperately wanted to be nothing but normal. And now here's my chance... sort of, anyway... and all I can think is, okay, when is the crazy going to really start?" She sighed, shook her head, and took another drink.

"This, though," she admitted after a second with her eyes trained on the bottle in her hand, "this is nice." She looked back up at him with a soft smile that left no room for doubt what she was talking about.

"I can see that," Sam chuckled. "Five years ago? I probably would have leapt at the chance, but now I'm sort of used to life on the edge, I guess. Even when it was just back when we hunted spirits that haunted mirrors and houses and weird things, it was exciting. So you're right. Living that whole Pleasantville life would probably bore me to death," he agreed.

Sam smirked when she looked at him. Okay, there was no question about that look. When it came to women, Sam was about as clueless as the kid in the corner with the dunce cap on, but that look and that smile? There was no denying it. Even for someone as inept at dealing with women as he was.

"It is nice," he agreed again, looking over at her with intrigue. They spent a lot of time together, getting to know each other and the like. Sam was aware that he hadn't known her for long, but it didn't feel that way. He trusted her in ways it had taken him years to build trust with other people. "There aren't many positives to bring out of this place, really, but the fact that I wouldn't have met you otherwise? It's definitely one of the big ones," he admitted sheepishly, eyes turning away from her and a deep, crimson blush creeping along his cheeks.

Claire's stomach did a small flip-flop at his words. She didn't have much experience with guys. She hadn't ever dated in a really traditional sense. She wasn't sure of the subtleties, didn't know the ins and outs, and had no concept of how to casually flirt without sounding completely lame or downright desperate. Yet as she sat there on the stairs, there was one thing that she did know with absolute certainty.

She liked Sam Winchester. She didn't just like him as a friend. She liked him. She liked spending time with him. She liked seeing him smile. She looked forward to talking with him and enjoyed every moment they'd spent together thus far. Even when they had discussed things that weren't easy to talk about, she had wanted to be there with him, talking about those things. Confiding in him things that she had never confided in another person before. Ever. To put it simply, she had a crush and no matter how much she might try to ignore it, it clearly had no intention of going away anytime soon.

The only problem was, she had no idea what to do with this realization. She wanted to think that he liked her too, but she couldn't be sure. She also didn't want to risk being wrong and make some move he would rebuff. That was a humiliation that she'd never live down and one that could possibly cost her their friendship. So rather than being bold and brazen, Claire simply opened her mouth to make a complete subject change.

"Oh my God, you're Sam Winchester!"

Okay. That wasn't her voice. Claire frowned, and blinked, and her gaze cut up and across the walkway in time to see a girl who looked to be about her age making a mad dash toward them. Her eyes were wide and she was smiling broadly. Pausing at the bottom of the stairs, the girl began to virtually squeal with excitement.

"I don't believe it! They said you were here but I hadn't seen you yet! I love you! You're amazing!" As the girl continued to babble on about just how wonderfully, awesome, and perfect he was, Claire felt her irritation skyrocket. Technically speaking, as a member of the security staff, she could intervene. However she didn't want to jump the gun, so to speak, so she instead glanced to Sam to see how he best wanted to handle the situation.

When she didn't say anything to him at first, Sam was nervous. What if he'd been way off base? It had been known to happen, and if he scared her off, he'd probably be even more miserable than he already was here. He was about to ask her if she thought he was being creepy and apologize if she did, when someone came up and started spazzing at him.

Sam looked on in horror at first, but then it turned to amusement when she said that he was perfect. She blathered on and on and Sam and Claire exchanged a look. He was about to tell her to walk away when she dropped the biggest conversational bomb this side of George W. Bush.

"It is, like, so unfair that you're going to be stuck in that box forever. It should totally be Dean and not you," she said, scoffing like a spoiled rotten teenager.

Sam's eyes narrowed. "Excuse me?" Was she really saying what he thought she was saying? Because if she was, Sam's faith in humanity was starting to dwindle even lower than it already had. Which was a big deal.

She shrugged. "Y'know. Like, Dean's a heartless jerk and you should totally not have to d-"

"Get out of here. Now. You have no idea what you're talking about and if you think I want to live in a world where my brother is stuck in a box underground? You must not know anything about me at all. Leave."

For a split second, Claire thought the girl was going to listen because, for a split second, she actually stopped talking long enough to look almost vaguely surprised. However apparently the girl decided that Sam wasn't being serious because she gave a soft laugh and roll of her eyes, before moving closer to the stairs where they were sitting.

"It's okay," the girl assured him. As she spoke, Claire slowly and quietly rose to her feet. She was mostly ignored as she moved down the stairs until she was nearly at eye level with the guest. She made no move to move past her but instead stood there, scarcely able to believe what she was hearing.

"I don't expect you to agree, even if he does totally deserve it. Well, he actually deserved to be left in Hell in the fir-"

Claire wasn't sure what the girl was going to add. Frankly, she didn't care. As soon as the words had registered she just... reacted.

Hand balled into a fist, she swung out and connected with the girl's nose. There was a satisfying crunching sound as bone gave way - both in the nose she'd hit as well as Claire's own hand. The girl stumbled backward, eventually losing her footing and hitting the ground with a thud. For a split second there wasn't any sound at all, then the guest let out a shriek of pain. Claire, meanwhile, held her hand out to the side and felt the telltale tingling of bones mending and the busted skin across her knuckles quickly healing.

"One more word," Claire said in a hardened tone as she purposefully stepped in front of Sam, "and I swear to God I'm going to break more than just your nose. Now go."

Sam's eyes narrowed even farther when he discovered that the girl actually had the nerve to say that Dean deserved to be in his place, let alone in hell. Sam was just about to yell at her for disrespecting his brother when he noticed that Claire had moved down the steps. His eyes widened when he saw her punch the girl, and he felt one corner of his mouth tugging up in a bit of a smirk. Which grew even more when the girl scrambled to her feet.

"You bitch!" she shouted at Claire, and then took a step forward, when Sam joined Claire at the bottom of the stairs. "I swear to God you're going to regret this!" she shouted, turning like she was on fire and running away, cursing them both under her breath.

Sam turned to Claire, looking at her hand, head cocked in curiosity as he watched it heal itself. She said that she could do it, yes, but he hadn't seen it happen yet. He took her hand and laid it flat across his, looking at her and smiling. "That's definitely handy in situations like that," he said, leaving it at that and intertwining their fingers, clasping them together like they had been before.

"Thanks, by the way, for that. She had no idea what she was talking about and if anyone thinks my brother deserves this fate over me? They're out of their freaking mind," he said, leaning in and pressing a soft, quick kiss to her cheek. "And I'm pretty sure you're the only girl who's ever punched someone for me..." he added.

"Want to sit back down?" he asked her, nodding back to the steps.
