Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Marian and the Doctor
WHAT: Both venture outside of their fandoms, finally
WHEN: Early morning
WHERE: the trails of Ridgeway
STATUS: Incomplete
Rating: undetermined, likely not very high

Marian and Robin had been spending as much time as possible together over the days since she'd returned; it was something that needed to be done so both could regain their sanity. Hopefully James understood that when he realized why Marian had been canceling some of her appointments. Still, she couldn't help herself. But, when she'd woken early that morning, next to her love, she'd crept out, intent on gathering something for breakfast and creeping back. She'd developed quite a taste for orange juice.

She'd purchased a few things; orange juice and milk, some rolls and fruit, and, with a soft smile to the person working behind the counter, Marian hurried back out again. In her haste to return before Robin awoke, however, she managed to run right into someone, her newly purchased groceries spilling by her feet.

Apology spilled over her lips as she knelt, gathering things together once more. "I'm so sorry. I should have been watching where I was going."

The Doctor had woken early and begun to snoop, looking into various parts of the hotel as he went just in case anything was off. He'd been fiddling with a lamp when a slender form knocked him off balance, nearly making him drop his screwdriver. He blinked, then stooped, grin bright as ever as he knelt and helped her pick up her groceries. He smiled and then stood again, carefuly giving her the items and making sure nothing else was on the floor, storing his sonic screwdriver in his inner coat pocket. "Oh, don't worry about me! Made of sterner stuff than I look. Are you alright?"

"Fine," she nodded, straightening, foodstuffs safe once more in a bag. "Thank you. I really should have been watching where I was going, I was just...in a bit of a hurry." She didn't want Robin to worry needlessly.

Still, his smile was infectious and she couldn't help but return it. "I suppose the proper thing to do would be to introduce myself, then. Marian Fitzwalter, Mr....?"

"Hurrying off somewhere quite important, I imagine," he nodded, reaching up and putting the lamp back in its place. "Hello, Marian Fitzwalter, I'm the Doctor. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Do you need help carrying your bag to.... wherever it is that you're going?"

"Just the Doctor?" She questioned. Well, Marian supposed it wasn't weirder than anything else she'd come across during her stay here at Ridgeway.

"And yes...somewhere rather important," she agreed, cheeks flushing pink. "I got up before Robin did this morning. I thought I'd surprise him with breakfast. So...thank you for your kind offer, but...I think I'll be fine, assuming I don't knock into anyone else."

"Just the Doctor. Hello," he chuckled and waved. He nodded as she explained where she was going, then looked down the hall. She was heading towards some of the cabins. "So Robin is your fiance, then?" he looked at her hand, noting the ring and then chuckling. "Robin of Locksley, yes? You haven't run off to another storybook, have you?"

Cheeks flushed as she realized this man knew exactly who she was. "No. I'm quite happy with the man I have in my own storyline, thank you, very much." Why should she ever wish to look for someone else?

"But thank you for not referring to me as Maid Marian. It does get a little tiresome."

"Well! Everybody has a name, and you gave me yours. Who am I to decide what to call you?" he asked. He was enjoying this place, all of the characters from literature who were actually, in their own universes, real. It was a great thing to think about, to wonder how many universes there actually were. Mind boggling, even for him. Not to mention, the technology that collecting them all would require... to think it was somewhere in this hotel was truly exciting.

"You might be surprised," Marian answered dryly. Several of the guests had insisted on calling her Maid Marian despite her protestations to the contrary. "Though for all it's negative aspects, I am beginning to find myself rather at home here." It was nice not to have to worry about anyone being killed.

"Really? No desire to get back to what you knew? Not even a little bit?" he asked curiously. He knew a lot of people were eager to get home. To get back to missions, loved ones, or just the lives they knew. He was already missing the TARDIS terribly and knew Rose was starting to feel anxious about not being able to travel anymore. Jack.... well, he wasn't really keen on being around Jack if he could help it, and was sure the man could land on his feet wherever he fell.

"No," Marian answered, shaking her head. "I went back once...a few days ago... I didn't remember any of this. If I go back again, I'll be..." Dead. "I won't be with Robin. I would prefer to stay here."

"Well. I'm sure you'll be here a good long while then. The manager seems keen on keeping all his ducks," the Doctor smiled at her. He figured that was as comforting as it got, though it just irked him. He didn't like to be kept by anybody, but the manager seemed to have full control over them and where they went and when.

"I know not everyone feels the same," Marian answered. And by the looks of it, the Doctor was one of those who would never like it.

"If it's any comfort to you, there have been many people who have gone back. You likely won't even remember this." She sure hadn't.

"Yes, of course," he said, apparently blowing it off as a given. In reality he wasn't completely convinced of anything, and no more trusted himself to be "returned" than to be killed or tossed into some random universe where Time Lords didn't exist. "Were you one of them, then? I've heard people have been popping in and out lately."

"I was," Marian nodded. "Popped out one day, came back a few days later...except for me, months had passed. I'm lucky I came back when I did." She shuddered at the thought of what might have happened to her had she not come back when she had. What would have happened had Petersen not been able to bring her back before death? would she have returned at all? Would she be able to remember what heaven was like?

"Bad times?" the Doctor guess, then noted that the lamp he'd tinkered with wasn't lighting properly. He reached up with his screwdriver and fiddled with it for a moment, making it a bit brighter and more securely fixed in place. "Well, time acts differently between universes. Makes sense that while you're away you're experiencing more or less. Still."

He paused, then turned and looked at her curiously. "Was Robin there as well?"

She hesitated for amoment, trying to figure out how to explain everything. "...yes and no. That is he was there...but he was here, too. He never left here, but I was interacting with him and Allan and..."

A shake of her head. It was too confusing for words. "I don't know how it's possible, but it is."

"Wow. That is a bit of a brain buster," the Doctor's eyebrows lifted and he thought for a moment. Then he shrugged. "Almighty boss. Suppose he's just that good." This was getting more and more interesting. "And were you missed, or were you returned to the same point when he'd taken you originally?"

"Same point," Marian answered, eyes distant as she focused on remembering everything. "I didn't even remember this place until I was returned here."

A shake of her head. She didn't like thinking about it. "That's why I said you might be returned with no memories of this place or anyone you meet here."

The Doctor watched her thoughtfully, nodding slightly to himself. "Well. Makes you wonder," he smiled slightly. "All the possibilities. No consequences, I suppose, because nothing that happens here, by that rational, will matter anyway." He went quiet for a moment, thinking about this, then smiled and looked up.

"Still," he said. "Best act responsibly. Probably."

She frowned at that. Nothing mattered here; the fact that she and Robin were getting married meant nothing because as soon as they were returned, she would have no memory of it.

No. She refused to think that. She would follow her own advice and enjoy what little time they did have together. "Probably."

She didn't like this man, nor the strange thoughts that he put in her head. She was already outside her comfort zone, this Doctor looked to take her completely out.

"I should..." Get back to Robin. "It was nice to meet you, Doctor."

"Oh yeah! Pleasure meeting you as well. Really, I'm a really big fan," the Doctor chuckled and bowed to her slightly. "If you need anything repaired, don't hesitate to give me a call." He grinned at her, then went back to his work, once more focused on the task at hand.
