WHO: Ruby & Sam
WHEN: the tornado
WHERE: outside
WHAT: ruby gets hurt and sam helps
RATING: no idea. probably high

Ruby was still trying to get the horses out. She'd let them go but there was still one that wouldn't leave the stables. This is what happened when people domesticated horses. They stayed even until their death. And Ruby wasn't having that. She didn't have it in her to deal with anything else. Especially after that whole kid fiasco. Ruby just didn't want to exist with people, because people were shit.

And yet somehow she'd been talked into admitting to Sam that she was staying outside during this damn tornado because she wouldn't leave the horses. And now the stupid ass was on his way to get her.

She was doing everything she could to get the damn horse to run to safety. She'd gotten it out of the stable and locked the doors, but she was having a hell of a time getting her to leave the pen. She was going to have to drag the damn thing to the caves herself. And she could already see Sam sprinting across the field toward her.

"I told you not to come out here."

"I'm not leaving you out here by yourself in the middle of a tornado, Ruby!" He practically had to shout to be heard over the wind as he reached her. Sam moved past her to catch the reigns of the horse's bridle and hold it firmly in place, to give Ruby a chance to calm it down. No matter what she said, a horse with eyes like that could trample her in a heartbeat, no matter what kind of mutual affection there was going on there.

"Let's just get this done, and then we'll both get to safety."

Ruby rolled her eyes, but she didn't have much choice. She took the reigns from him and made an attempt to nudge the horse in the direction of the cliffs. She needed to get the horse somewhere safe. She needed to do it quickly to get Sam somewhere safe. He was going to get himself killed.

"I got it, Sam. Get back inside. You don't have long until the tornado hits. Go." Ruby growled, but she doubted he even heard it. She was still upset. Upset about having been vulnerable to him, upset about his back and forth emotions, upset about even being stuck here. And she didn't want Sam to see any of that.

Sam frowned, but stood aside - lose enough, however, that he could help if the horse bucked. "When this is done, I will. Not til then." He frowned as he watched her with the horse, stepping forward again to help nudge it out of the pen.

"Why is this one so much more stubborn than the others?" In his opinion, it was taking after Ruby way too much.

"Because everyone keeps trying to break her and her spirit is dying." Ruby knew that feeling too well. Anyone that felt attacked was going to rail against anything that made them feel pressured. Ruby was pretty sure they weren't just talking about the horse, but she wasn't ready to discuss that with Sam either.

Then again, Sam had a habit of not letting her get out of talking about things. She was glad the storm was loud and made it hard to hear. She almost wanted to kick just to get him to stop this. Maybe if she pissed him off enough he would go away and she could stop feeling so vulnerable.

He caught the words and frowned over at her, but now was not the time for conversations like that. Sam moved to the other side of the horse and gripped the reins from that side instead. "Let's try this together, lead her from both sides. Maybe she'll take the hint." He started to walk forward carefully, his free hand shoving damp hair out of his eyes as he tried to focus on where they were going.

Ruby glanced over at Sam, but didn't say anything else. Not right now. She was stressed and it wasn't spooking the horse. Sam was stressed because she was stressed. The horse needed to calm down a little, at least until they could get her to safety. Ruby was pretty sure she was going to fight them the whole time they were trying to save her. She was pretty sure there was a metaphor here.

Looking over her shoulder, Ruby could see the storm getting closer. "Sam, go back. Get underground." A last ditch effort that she knew wouldn't do much good. But she wanted to. Needed to try. For him and for her.

"Just shut up for the moment, Ruby." He was speaking calmly so as not to spook the horse, helping to move the mare forward one step at a time. "We'll get out before it gets here, okay? So will this girl." He reached up to pat the horse lightly on the back of her neck, hoping to get her out quickly and safely so that he and Ruby could take cover.

Ruby rolled her eyes. She pointed toward the cliffs, that's where Robin said the other horses would take cover. That's where Ruby planned to hide. But from the way the storm was coming up behind them, she wasn't sure it would help. He was an idiot for coming out here. He was going to get himself killed and then everyone would blame her and she'd die quicker than she expected to die already.

The horse wasn't any more spooked than before, but she started moving faster. Ruby pushed herself to move faster to keep up. Maybe the horse was starting to run for shelter. Maybe she was just trying to escape them. At least she was moving away from the storm.

Sam's hands were slipping thanks to the wet reins, so he paused and planted his feet to fix his grip, then started ahead again with the horse, letting her take the lead since it seemed she was going in the right direction. After they had made it just out of the field and onto the trail, he shouted above the wind.

"You okay over there?"

"Go home, Sam." Ruby didn't even look at him. Although at this point she knew she was screaming at the wind, literally and figuratively. The storm was coming up behind them, probably already hit the cabins. If he went back now, he'd be walking straight into it. But having him fuss and worry over her was making the knot in her stomach so tight she thought she might puke. The stress of dealing with this was just a bit overwhelming.

But she could see the caves. And apparently so could the horse. Ruby lost her grip on the reins and the horse took off. And she just let her go, because fighting with a horse that was headed for the place she was leading her to was stupid. And if it meant Sam ran to safety first, that was fine too. The last thing she needed was for him to end up dead.
