Sample Application: Minor FC
Sometimes, with an FC, there just isn't /enough/ information to make a fleshed out app. In that case, we encourage players to build on what /is/ available to create a story for these characters. We do allow for some deviation from canon, so long as it make sense (and isn't world-shattering). And remember, this app is a sample to the wizards of your creative and writing ability, the first sample, likely.
Below is an app for a Minor FC student, and a sample of the quality we expect out of any application.

Code Name: Loa
Affiliation: Xavier's Academy
PB: Kristin Kreuk
BG:
Alani Ryan was born in Hawaii to two parents who were told that they would never have any children. It was a complicated birth that left Alani's mother rather weak and ill for the remainder of her short life. Alani, on the other hand, was a healthy and vigorous child - she drove her parents insane with her constant screams at inopportune times and her constant need for attention. The Ryans were hardly rich; Mr. Kai Ryan co-owned a shop by the beach that would sell or rent swimming equipment - everything from swim suits to scuba gear and flotation devices. Though he was most known for his excellent craftsmanship with his hand-made surfboards; the ones he made and his partner painted. The co-owner and painter was his best friend, the man whom Alani learned to call Uncle Joe. Alani's mother, Leilani, on the other hand, was a school teacher at the local elementary. They had one old, used car and lived in a tiny run-down house by the beach. Though it was hard to make ends meet at times, especially when it comes to dental bills or medical emergencies, they managed to live well and quite happily; content and easy going.
It was in this environment that Alani grew up in. She led a carefree life; going to school in the mornings before running off to join her father and Uncle Joe after school. It was no wonder the girl grew to love the beach; as soon as she was old enough to swim, she started to take out the surfboards and try them out, under her uncle or father's supervision of course. She took to surfing like a fish to water. Unfortunately, this laid back life-style had its consequences. While her family may not be financially well-off, Alani only wanted surfboards and the occasional CD, which her father was happy to provide. So the girl never had something she wanted desperately and couldn't get - she never tried to see something through all the way until the end nor did she learn much about commitment or hard, back-breaking work. Instead, she procrastinated like a pro. She was a care free girl who got by on her wits and her intelligence most of the time.
In school, Alani was a straight 'B' student, which was fine with her parents, but her teachers all commented on the same thing: she doesn't put enough effort into her work. Some of the teachers saw potential in the girl; they claimed that she was very bright, able to skip a grade if she puts just a bit more effort, but Alani never did, she never saw a reason to. The girl was aimless when it came to her goals or future, she was fine with just living life for the moment; there will be time to worry about other things later. She would doodle in her notebook during class and answer the questions correctly only when she was called upon or forced to participate; that is, when she wasn't ditching class for the beach. Alani wasn't even interested in learning about her heritage or culture very much - she took the occasional dance class for a few months a year. Usually only when she was in the mood or working part-time at a tourist hotel as one of the background child-dancers. She learned Hawaiian from her mother and father, but there was no real interest as a child, she was much more concerned with play time.
The first thing to upset the balance in Alani's life was the death of her mother. Her mother had discovered that she was pregnant once more, which was a joyous celebration at first. Unfortunately, by the second trimester, there were already signs of problems and complications. Alani's mother was placed in a hospital under supervision until the baby was born. She died of labor complications and the doctors were unable to save the baby. Alani was ten years old when it happened and her mother's death hit her hard. The girl withdrew a bit after the deaths; she procrastinated more than ever, her grades slipped and she grew far more apathetic than she usually was. Alani even took a break from her surfing and the beach for the remainder of the year. While she still remained relatively easy-going, the girl wasn't as gregarious and out-going as she usually was, instead she became a lot more quiet and subdued.
Now that the second income was also gone, Alani had to pick up some of the slack. At first she simply helped her father and uncle at the shop since she was too young to take a part-time job. With her help, her father had a lot more time to work on his hand-made surfboards which brought in more money than any other product on their shelves. Uncle Joe helped as much as he could as well and lent them some cash when things got too tight.
It wasn't until Alani was thirteen did her powers first started to manifest. At first she believed that she simply was sunburned; a rare occurrence for her but it happens. As the skin started to peel away, parts of her new skin turned out to be a different color entirely, a deep and dark red, as if it was painted or tattooed on. Alani immediately grew concerned and told her father, who took her to a doctor. After careful and lengthy examinations, it was determined that Alani was not sick but a mutant. Since she had not shown any signs of other powers, it was assumed that her powers were simple skin-pigmentation. Since her powers were so simple, Alani's father and Joe easily accepted it and Alani was secretly ecstatic about it. While mutants were frowned upon by most, the idea of being one of the few and the rare had a romantic notion to it. The girl simply wished she had a cooler power.
In school, things were tense at first with her fellow students. Once they realized she was the same easy-going and laid-back Alani, however, the girl was easily accepted. No lynching, no mob, nothing; there was the occasional student or two who had a problem with her of course, but Alani was well-liked and the trouble makers stopped eventually. It wasn't until she hit fifteen that her second powers emerged. By then, Alani started to work after school, becoming a part-time waitress and surfing instructor while training to become a lifeguard on the side - the training would be useful in case there were any surfing accidents after all. It happened while she was on the bus after school; by then most of the kids were already dropped off except for a handful, Alani being one of them. Seated at the back, she had no idea what was going on or why the driver suddenly yelled and turned the wheel sharply; one of the tires blew out as the bus skidded, spun then started to roll. Once it finally came to a stop and Alani managed to clear her mind, she found herself completely pinned by her seat along with another student.
The other passengers managed to free themselves and the bus driver dove back in to help her and her fellow student; however, he wasn't strong enough to break them free and the smell of smoke and gasoline filled the space rapidly. Alani started to panic and reached down in attempt to pull the seat and metal bars off her legs more vigorously. As she gripped them, she found that her fingers went, or rather phased, through them as easily as if she was a hologram. As her hands passed through however, the materials completely dissolved and broke down, the girl was free and with little thought, she went to work on the unconscious student next to her. Within minutes, Alani managed to scramble out of the bus along with the driver who carried the other student.
As useful or powerful her new abilities may seem, Alani found out about the downside of having such a power soon enough. Being unable to control her gift, the girl made things crumble about her randomly; her clothes, her books, it didn't matter, if she touched it, it would be destroyed at some point. Unfortunately, her powers weren't limited to the inorganic either as one student once tried to help her when she phased out of her clothing and destroyed them. As he reached out to grab her shoulder, his hand passed through it was completely torn to shreds at his wrist, nearly amputating his hand if he had passed all the way through. That incident struck fear within the student body and Alani was told to remain at home until she was no longer a threat towards any other other person. Suffice to say the girl started to grow wary about being touched for fear of hurting people and so she isolated herself, not letting even her father touch her. It was while she was in this state of misery and oh so common angst that Alani was finally contacted by a representative of Xavier's school for the gifted; and with the representative came the promise of growth, education and learning control. It was a hard decision to make, to leave her father and Uncle Joe behind; but it would work better for her family's financial situation (one less mouth to feed and clothe, especially since she went through her clothes so rapidly.) Eventually, after putting it off for as long as she could, Alani agreed and, with her father's and Uncle Joe's blessing, she packed her bags and left to join the academy.
Personality:
Laid-Back: Alani is a very laid-back and easy going individual. She has a rather good outlook on life, a bit optimistic but in a lazy and apathetic sort of way; she'll worry about things when the time comes, and if it doesn't kill her or affect her, then there is no real reason to worry. It is a bit hard to get her angry or riled up about something. Alani prefers comfort and contentment over passion most of the time; she has no qualms about life passing her by as she stops to sniff a few dozen flowers.
Lazy: Going along hand-in-hand with her laid-back attitude, Alani is very much a lazy girl. While not necessary the 24 hour couch potato (although she does have those days as well) Alani is more of the type who simply prefers aimless or pointless but enjoyable tasks over anything else. She would ditch school to lounge around and sun bathe at the beach; yet active enough to seek out the surfs and go swimming. She has no qualms about spending the day doing absolutely nothing and being unproductive or doing the things she wishes to do. Her priorities are a bit messed up in that way.
Procrastinator: Being so lazy and laid back, it's no wonder Alani is a procrastinator. Living in the present, the girl would much rather deal with the things that she enjoys than worry about things that won't be due until later. Organization and time management is not exactly in her vocabulary. Alani will wait until the very last minute to get anything done, from term papers to deciding what to do in any given situation. Unfortunately, Alani also seems to have her best ideas when under stress or during time-constraints. The closer she gets to a deadline, the clearer her thoughts and the less she is affected by distraction. This also forces her to shove a large amount of work into a short time, which means that although her ideas and thoughts may be exceptional, the execution of such ideas and thoughts will be far from perfect.
Aimless: Perhaps the reason she is so lazy and intent on wasting her life is because Alani is aimless. She was never driven to do anything as a child. She was given what she wanted for the most part and even when she worked, her jobs were rather enjoyable and carefree. Alani has no idea what she really wants to do, she has nothing to strive for or be passionate about, even after she discovered she was a mutant. She has so much potential, but unfortunately she is wasting it away in a sense.
Lax Morals: A trait that most would probably find surprising for such an easy-going girl, but Alani truly does have lax morals. She will break the laws when she believes it is right, following her own ideas of what is right or wrong rather than those imposed on her by others. For example, she partakes in a few illegal herbs, to go along with her easy and lazy attitude; but killing someone, even in defense, is an act that would haunt her. She believes in the idea that victim-less crimes are not real crimes at all.
Powers: Alani's power is her ability to 'swim' through any solid matter and have it crumble. Basically the girl is able to touch any solid object and break down the molecular bonds, breaking the object apart and allowing herself to 'phase' through it. The objects would slip through her body and come out on the other side as broken pieces – the faster they pass through her the larger the 'chunks' are on the other side; the slower, the smaller the pieces as her body has time to break them apart further. Her markings are theorized to be the reason her body is able to disassemble molecules although it is uncertain why. Since Alani attacks the materials at the very building blocks, there is no solid matter she couldn't break down as long as it passes through her, organic and inorganic. The softer or the less dense an object is, however, the more thorough the disassembly is. For example, a human fist being punched through her would be torn to shreds and amputated if they go all the way through – enhanced reflexes means less injury but injury none-the-less. Her control, however, is erratic; sometimes she isn't able to phase in time or at all, no matter how much she wills it, and sometimes she is constantly phasing no matter how much she tries to keep herself solid. There are varying degrees of disassembly when she gains control (able to only break down specific objects while maintaining the structure of others – for example, a handcuffed hand passing through her means she can dissolve the cuffs but leave the hands unharmed.) OOC Note: Her powers are pretty strong for when it comes to physical attacks; her lack of control is to allow people consent on the degree of injury they are willing to go for.
Skills:
Dancing: Every once in a while Alani has taken a few dance classes, specifically hula. Alani knows a few of the dances and has them memorized thanks to forced participation by her parents. She is far from the best, but the girl is not half bad either; while she won't be winning any competition soon, she is good enough to be placed as a background dancer during a show/tribute/festival/what have you.
First Aid: Thanks to some of her training, Alani knows how to deal with first aid pretty well. She is CPR certified, knows how to deal with broken bones and using splints. She also knows the Heimlich maneuver, what to do with deep cuts or injuries, and so on and so forth. When it comes to minor medical injuries or problems, Alani is able and ready. Due to her lifeguard training, she is also well-equipped to handle a situation involving people drowning and water-related emergencies to a limited degree.
Languages: Alani grew up in a bilingual home, however, her English is still stronger than her Hawaiian. While she can still speak fluently and her vocabulary is still strong, the girl doesn't make much use of it and still feels more comfortable when using English. Aside from Hawaiian, Alani also knows quite a bit of Hawaiian pidgin and can understand it perfectly well; she especially loves to use it when trying to confuse the tourists.
Self-Defense: Ever since entering Xavier's school, Alani has been trained in martial arts, specifically as a form of self-defense, although offensive measures have also been practiced. It has been a few months now and the girl's skill is growing steadily. While she isn't gung-ho about learning to beat people up and much prefers the waves, Alani understands the necessity, especially after witnessing people being attacked a few times. She is capable of handling perhaps one average thugs; maybe a bit more if using her powers as well. She is by no means a ninja.
Surfing: Alani's favorite hobby; if she had it her way, it would probably her career. Thankfully, the girl is incredibly good when it comes to surfing. If there was anything she was born to do, it would probably be this sport; she has won a number of competitions for the girls' section, and it is known that in co-ed competitions, she would beat the boys too. She is considered a prodigy, even for males. Not only can she surf well, but Alani knows quite a few tricks too, such as the frontside or backside airs, layback snap, and so on. Swimming: The girl is a very strong swimmer, it comes with fighting against the waves during a wipeout, training as a lifeguard and generally her love of the ocean. She knows well enough to know what to do during a rip tide, as well as a number of swimming styles depending on the situation, including the ones used to help rescue people. Alani also knows what to do when attempting to preserve her energy if stuck in the ocean with no floatation device. It also helps to know the different styles of swimming. While she may not be the fastest swimmer, Alani is still a strong one and does well with long distances.
Intelligence: While she may not strike someone as the brightest or most intelligent student, especially after looking at her horrific grades (particularly when it comes to science and math) Alani is however, a very smart girl. Above average in intelligence, especially in abstract thought and theory, Alani simply needs to put in a bit of effort into her work and she'd be skipping grades and getting full marks. She plainly sucks when it comes to sciences and math; but analytical skills and critical thinking on an abstract level such as literary theory and creative thinking, she excells. She has great memory and would be able to repeat someone verbatim if needed, but thanks to her laziness and procrastination she rarely makes good use of her brain aside from the occasional crossword puzzle or game of scrabble.
Possible NPCs: Alani has a father and an Uncle Joe that she would do anything for. They are the two most important people in her life. Both of them are as laidback as she is; her father is a jolly but big man who constantly wears absolutely horribly clashing Hawaiian shirts meant more for the tourists. He has a great sense of humor and a casual outlook on life. While he has a great sense of humor, he did and still does have a hard life, and thus uses his humor as a means to cope. Tall and lanky, Uncle Joe is the womanizer of the two, although he is also filled with quite a bit of wisdom and life experience. As the artist, he's more poetic in general and sees the way he lives his life as a romantic artist in a way. He treats Alani as his own daughter as well and is usually the person she runs to when she has moral or ethical dilemma, especially if she isn't comfortable with telling her father.
