Book Review: Memoirs of a Geisha
Author: Author Golden
Book: Memoirs of a Geisha
Memoirs of a geisha by Author Golden. Wiki Link Memoirs of a Geisha
When I first read this book in the tenth grade, I thought "Wow, this is an autobiography? It's great." I let my sister read it and she said "Oh, you know it's a fictional book by this guy? I was shocked." I was too, it's a delightful book. I went out and brought it because it opened my eyes to tasteful reading and killed some stereotypes about authors I had. Like men couldn't write tastefully. It's a classic.
What I liked about the book? I loved it, absolutely. It inspired me to learn about Geisha and learn more. It taught me that with cultural knowledge and background imagination...not to forget a great imagintion, one can write something so powerful that it sticks to your mind for a long time thereafter.
What I didn't like? I admit, there were many sad parts during this book, and many bad decisions made by the protaganist, but I enjoyed it immensely. I re-read it now and again, because I love it so much.
Back of the book- "A literary sensation an runaway bestseller, this brillant debut novel presents with seamless authenticity and exquisite lyricism the true confession of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha.
In Memoirs of a Geisha, we wenter a world where appeareances are paramount: where a girl's virginity is aucioned to the highest bidder, where women are trained to beguile the most pwerful men; and where love is scorned as an illusion. It is a unique and triumpant work of fiction-at once romantic, erotics,s upspenseful- and completely unforgettable."
Well I actually had to read this book for a project, so at first I didn't read the back, I usually don't for projects given the book is almost always boring, but this book hooked me in so deep, that I forgot what it was a project.
Overall: Of course I liked it, or I wouldn't keep rambling about it.
There is a movie and I did watch it.

I didn't like it, as I thought I would. It had too many discrepancies between the book and the movie. I even refused to look at the new cover of the book after the movie came out, because when books are republished after movies, they are most often changed. The movie is good though, a little forced, and the actors are actually Chinese, which made me a little confused, but I liked it.
But that movie cannot touch the book, it wasn't powerful, it didn't stick in my mind, and it didn't stick to the book as I thought it would.
