Christmas yummies! For those of you playing the game at home, last year the Mr and I decided to give cookies as Christmas presents. We have a lot of people we like to give presents to, but even if we kept it to $40 or less a person, we'd still be spending around $500-$1000 on gifts, and that's just unacceptable when the alternative is keeping our mortgage and my car payment up to date. Anyhow, I made about 2 gross of cookies last year, of various types, and distributed them out, even though I was worried people might feel slighted. I was worried for nothing, though, and we're doing the baked goods gifting again this year. And I'm actually getting prepared sooner, so it won't be as awkward as last year, with the piggy-bank breaking to buy flour and eggs last minute (of course, we were also paying for John's surgery down payment then, too, but I'm rambling). I've got 10 lbs of flour, 4 lbs of sugar, a large bottle of vanilla extract, a small mountain of shredded coconut, and a metric fuck-ton of various chocolate chips. I've decided on: Sugar cookies White chocolate cherry macadamia nut cookies Three-chocolate cookies Paradise Macaroons (all hail Alton Brown) Raspberry-lemon thumbprint cookies Whatever the Mr decides will be "his" contribution - he's currently worshiping at the altar of Paula Dean in search of enlightenment I also managed to score a bag of mint and chocolate chips, so I'm considering maybe some chocolate cookies with those in them. And I'm considering experimenting with a chocolate-orange cookie I've been thinking about. Not sure if I'm going to do oatmeal cookies, but the recipe I have is soft and chewy and has no added sugar. Something has to balance out the rest of this, nutritionally speaking. And when I went to the store for soda after work today, I caught a sale on almond paste, so I think I'm going to try my hand at marzipan. Maybe little marzipan fruit baskets. Oh! Or maybe little tiny gift boxes, because that would be too precious for words. Also, I was thinking about maybe giving truffles a shot, but that depends on my time as Christmas approaches, since those would probably take a long time. So, after the cold stuff/perishables, little ingredients I've forgotten to get and whatever I'm put these in, I'll probably spend about $250 total (I'm up to $100). And have presents for 25 people. Damn I'm good. Current Mood: productive |

Food, School and Procrastination I have two essays and a research paper draft to finish by the end of this weekend. I also have to write a children's story, though I'm considering a poem. I can't write for children. This is not going to end well. Somebody please remind me to call my dad Friday to cancel Sunday dinner at his place? I have a feeling I'm going to be be writing papers like a fiend all weekend, and I was supposed to go over to his house and cook Thai food. Hopefully I can just postpone a week, and the extra time will be good for finding recipes and menu planning. This weekend is just sucky timing for giving up an evening. Oh! I know! To make it up to Dad, I'll hunt up a new ethnic food I haven't cooked before and offer to make that for Christmas Eve dinner. Maybe French. Or I could do fancy Italian. Something snazy and new that won't clash too terribly with step-grandmother's traditional Christmas pudding. Anyone know where I can find Christmas crackers? If I mess with the boring standards, I should probably offer some classic traditions in exchange. Step-grandmother would get a royal kick out of them. But for now, I really need to concentrate on school stuff. Especially my History essay, which will take time as I need to paraphrase everything the book says about Imperialism, especially in Africa, and then watch Out of Africa and dissect how well the movie illustrates the "theme." God, this is such an f'ing stupid assignment. Then I need to write an essay for World Lit, not really sure what on, and I really should do my best to finish a rough of my research paper on Euripdes's Medea. Especially since I plan to make at least one controversial argument that makes me glad that I'm not in a 4-year school. If only because then there might be the expectation that I should have a solid knowledge of Ancient Greek and Ancient Greek culture, based on the fact that it's ridiculous to argue language choices and completely avoid discussing the original language as I plan to. What? I don't speak Ancient Greek. I can't even read l33t-speak. I should have done all this weeks ago. *kicks own ass* Anyhow. Bedtime. I need to be up and about early enough to start the bread machine in the morning so we have fresh bread to offer the family. I'm hoping to time it so the bread is still warm when we arrive. The Continued Adventures of Lyv in Cookery Because I have been baking a lot lately (and am still baking for Thanksgiving, currently, as we speak), and have not had a lot of sleep, and have had a lot of caffeine, and need to come up with ways to amuse myself, such as creating silly polls Because I have been baking a lot lately, and have been wondering about the ways in which other people bake, and thinking about food in general, because food is good And because I am procrastinating on writing, because I cannot and will not manage to write anything coherent for NaNo or any other story, when I am this sleep-deprived: ( I present to you, dear flist, the following poll ) Current Mood: exhausted |

Never let a PMSing tech geek near shiny objects and a credit card I decided what to use a substantial chunk of my student loan overpayment money for. I pre-ordered a Nook. I have hundreds of ebooks, and with an English major, I'm going to be needing a lot of books beyond text books. I'd considered a Kindle, but after amazonfail, I'm fairly reluctant to give Amazon that much of my money in a single chunk and on an ongoing basis. Plus, with a Nook, I can go to ANY Barnes and Noble and use their WiFi to read any ebook for free while I'm there. *grabby hands* Also, the Nook has way cooler accessories. (I did a search on Amazon this semester for all of my textbooks, to see if I could have purchased them there for a Kindle. Not a one. Not even my anthology for World Lit. So much for using the Kindle for cutting book costs, huh?) And that concludes this winter's impulsive electronic purchase. Of course, now I I have to wait until January for my Nook, but I'll have it soon enough. I can wait. If I have to. |

ON BDSM Part III Okay, so we've covered SSC, RACK and consent along with Negotiation. Now we're going to look at – hopefully – just what power exchange is, contracts and limits. I say hopefully because I have no idea how long this post will be as I've just begun writing it. ( Let's start with Contracts. )Whew. Think I'm gonna stop there as I've probably given way too much information. I ended up covering things I hadn't intended to because they apply, so limits will be in another post. Again, questions, comments and discussion are welcome. Also, the_minx_17 has done a post on Vanilla, Kink and Lifestyle. |

On BDSM, Part II We've discussed what SSC, RACK and consent means. Today we're going to look at some other terms – negotiation, limits, contracts - break those down, and hopefully provide those reading with a better understanding of what those terms mean. ( Let's talk about Negotiation first. )Questions? Comments? Feel free to discuss. Those in the community, your comments are not only welcomed, but valued. On BDSM, Part III |

Cravings The Mr and I have been low carb for a month now. I have lost 12 lbs. All I want right now is to whip up a batch of blueberry muffins. Warm, sweet, crumbly blueberry goodness, just begging to be cut open and slathered in butter. I found this fantastic-looking recipe, and it looks like it would be perfect and moist and just exactly what I'm craving. Blueberry muffins don't have carbs, right? Current Mood: hungry |

piercing after care The other night, when I was cleaning my nasal piercing, I went to turn the stud and realized I had a substantial amount of resistance. Now, the last piercing I had was a hoop in my navel, which was way easy to move right up until it got infected and I took it out. Yes, I have since learned that was fantastically stupid. But the last one before that? Well, that was 15 years ago. And I had this vague recollection about being told that I should rotate the studs regularly so the skin wouldn't heal around and stick to the piercing. So I panicked the other night and forced that bad boy to turn, and now my nose is all sore again like it was last week. Anyhow, I was Googling for more advice on speeding up the healing process, only to find one reliable-looking site that says I shouldn't have forced it. Anyone with cartilage piercings want to weigh in on this? Also, while surfing, I winced at the number of people suggesting the daily use of hydrogen peroxide on nasal piercings. Some of my worst scars are from wounds I treated too often with hydrogen peroxide. The internet puts a wealth of information at your fingertips. Too bad most of it's wrong. Current Mood: confused |

On BDSM, Part I So, the_minx_17 and I have been talking for the last couple days about making a specific post. Minx put hers up already – you can find it here - and now I'm putting up mine. Hello, my name is Irana, and I am a Top. This means that within the BDSM community/The Scene/Lifestyle, I am what many refer to as a Dominant. This post will hopefully not only explain why I read very little BDSM, D/s, lifestyle themed fics, but also will allow those of you reading who are not a part of the community some knowledge. Because really, some of the stuff out there being called lifestyle fic is offensive. Please note, my specific issue is with fic labeled as portraying a lifestyle - as in BDSM 24/7 - relationship. Some of those fics have no actual basis in reality as they do not acknowledge RACK/SSC at all and it drives me batshit insane. What are those two things you ask? ( Let me explain. )I have a lot more to say, so I'm going to stop here for a bit. Got questions? Ask. Really. Next topics will be limits, total power exchange and negotiation. Edit: Part II of this discussion/meta is here. It covers Negotiation, so if there are questions about consent, SSC or RACK, please leave those here. |

Fic Repost ~ Fireworks ~ Day 4 ~ 30 Days of Neville So, was looking about my journal and realized huh... didn't post this last years after 30 Days of Nev was over. So... posting now. Title: Fireworks Author: Irana iranaRating: Adult Pairing(s): Draco/Neville Summary: When Draco and Neville see each other again for the first time in years it's at a place Draco never expected with results he never dreamed of. Disclaimer: This is a work of fanfiction set in the Harry Potter universe – all recognisable characters and settings are the property of J. K. Rowling and her associates. Real places and locations have been taken and twisted to suit my purposes for this fic. There is very little magic in this, because both of them are working within a Muggle/Magic program, and so they keep the use of magic to a minimum. Beta: many thanks to andreth_47 for the lightning beta. *smooches* ( *~*~* ) |

Ghost Hunter: Well, there might be something up in this tiny crawl space. I'm not sure if I'll fit, and there have been some reports of pretty violent activity here. I have to try, though... Fic Recs for the annoyed soul Because honestly, after discussing some of the unmitigated crap floating around various fandoms with Minxie, I needed something fluffy to restore my spirits. And, it's got neville, so you know it made me feel better. Go read To Be Noticed. It's Harry/Neville and worth the read. Also, the reveals for fall_fantasia went up today, so I can claim the story I wrote for eeyore9990, The Proper Incentive. Tis Snape/Bill, with a surprise secondary pairing. In addition, unbroken_halo wrote me the most delicious fivesome smut. yes. You read that right... fivesome. It's Wheel Of Fortune. |
