Some people believe their lives should be about other people. I chose a profession which focuses on improving the lives of others. It's not entirely self-sacrificing - there is a certain amount of prestige which comes with it. But the idea of it is important to me. Yet I still make selfish choices, and my life, as you say, is my own.

The fact that it goes away when you're at the parties makes me wonder if, on some level, you might be able to control it. It's going away when you're not able to think about it. Unless you're sure it's about the magic.
