Dual narratives: Man on the run
Who: David's NPC & Claire
What: She finds someone in need of help.
Where: Under the interstate overpass near the neighborhood.
When: Nowish. After the Mean-Eyed Cat closes.
Warnings/Rating: Maybe some blood mentions?
The night was warmer than Claire preferred. It made her gloves an obvious oddity, and the hunter jacket felt heavier with every degree of humidity that hung in the air. It was only going to get worse the closer to summer it got. In spite of her discomfort, this time of night was her favorite in Repose. The streets were empty, silent, and belonged entirely to her. It was the only time a person could dance down Main Street without becoming the subject of numerous rumors from the ladies in the red hats and purple suits.
Main Street did not go on forever, and the streetlamps became fewer and far between the further away one got. Shadows crept darker against the night as the overpass loomed above with the occasional rumble of an eighteen wheeler cutting through the silence like an impending and sudden storm. This was not her usual route home, and there was no particular reason she could pinpoint that made her choose this path. A nudge deep inside that some would consider divine intervention guided her steps. Though many more would deign to believe anything divine about choices made. That was the constant paradox that came with faith. To those that lacked it, faith was unable to be understood. To those that have it, faith never needed to be explained. It made it difficult to communicate with those out of reach.
On the long way home Claire could make out a figure in the night. Years of training taught her what to look for until spotting the strange was second nature. Something was wrong, though it was difficult for her to note without getting closer. A good thing that warriors did not back down from whatever charged on the battlefield. A smart person probably would have avoided potential danger. Claire, unfortunately, was a magnet for trouble as well as being unable to refuse any that may have needed her help. The tug just behind her heart to find the person in need of assistance was nothing unknown to her, but it had been a long time since she had felt the call from above and there was no way she would ignore it tonight. Not after everything that had happened to her after the ritual. "Hello?" she called out into the darkness, moonlight shifting in almost impossible angles to illuminate her face in opposition of inky shadow.
