Nish was momentarily distracted by the sudden flash of bright yellow, so that her eyes lingered on it for longer than necessary. After a second she shook herself out of it and took another pull from her glass, draining it and setting it down, looking hopefully around for the bartender who seemed busy with someone else at the moment. Finally she leaned in a little to the woman next to her, as if she didn’t want what she had to say to be overheard.
“Okay, so…the place I’m staying at, the bed and breakfast?” she said, as if she should know the place she’s talking about. “Creepy as hell. Full of antiques, looks like some fussy old lady lives in every room. And people say it’s haunted. Lots of people. And they’re not joking either. Crazy, right?” she asked with a chuckle, but then her smile fell just a little. “But the thing is…that whole place…you feel weird just being there. I don’t believe in ghosts at all, but you feel watched in that place. You see things out of the corner of your eye. Things don’t stay where you left them.” She glanced up, and managed to catch the bartender’s eye, nodding at him for another drink, and then turning back to look at Julia.
“And that’s just one building. Everywhere else…” she shook her head, as if trying to untangle her thoughts. “I don’t know, it’s just a feeling. Like I’m constantly on edge.”
