The memories still haunted her, even now. Three years since everything happened and she had left, and still they pursued her. Dogging her every step... or so it seemed. A disjointed mess within her mind. Her mind telling her things she did not wish to understand. She did not want to look into their meanings.
As always she woke startled in the dead of night. The rumble of her little generator echoed by others was a usual lullaby in the night. Slowly Evelyn sat up in her bed at the front of her little camper, the place she called home. She chewed at her bottom lip as emotions roiled within her, making her feel nauseous with their intensity. Her skin was clammy and prickled. Soon it turned into nervous energy and she couldn't be still. She was tired and needed more sleep, but no more would come tonight. So she slipped out of her bed and pulled on leggings stored in the drawers under her bed along with the oversized shirt she wore to bed. Crocheted socks followed, then battered Ugg boots, used when she had bought them.
Without turning on a light she sought out her hoodie. It too was overly large and secondhand. A padded jean jacket on over top, let open. Her phone was then grabbed. Stepping out she pressed earbuds into her ears and quietly made her way away from the little circle. It was the darkest part of the night right before the grey of the threatening dawn would appear. She did not fear it, though. Nor the snow and cold. She was from the northern, hard climates of Northern Michigan, this was nothing new.
'Diamond Hard' by Kerli started to play after she searched her phone. The first beats sending a shiver through her as her eyes closed, her feet falling in time. A single tear made a trek down her cheek.
You're rolling me in gravel, I'll leave without a scratch. You throwing rocks at my way, but I just won't react.
Finding this song had been a boon, and Evelyn had latched onto it immediately. It was how she dealt with everything, like now. As she drew away from the little caravan group she turned up the volume and let the music become her world. Let it swallow up her awareness. Her step-father spewed venom from her memories, but the hurting lessened as the song bolstered her.
The less I see the sun, the brighter I'll become. Outnumbered and outgunned, that's where I'm shining at. My skin is soft like velvet but my nails are razor sharp. My scent is sweet like honey but I am diamond hard. My ways they cut through plastic, rust free my golden heart. This shit is so bombastic, yeah I am diamond hard.
Her eyes had reopened soon after they had closed and she now looked ahead, but was on auto-pilot. She saw the expressions, the condemnation of her pears. The comments... friends pulling away...
"Unbreakable, unbreakable, unbreakable, unbreakable, unbreakable, unbreakable heart. I am diamond hard. Unbreakable, unbreakable, unbreakable, unbreakable, unbreakable, unbreakable heart. I am diamond hard... I am diamond hard..." she sang along to that verse, letting the words soak into her being. She was unbreakable, his words meant nothing. A mantra she continued to hold to, hoping one day it would be true. One day his words would stop plaguing her so she could reclaim her family.
