Prefer to be where people aren't," Brett said, half shrugging one shoulder and meeting her eyes with an almost challenging intensity. Then again, she'd said that she liked the quiet. "If that's your thing then there's the lake, the forest - plenty of places to get lost. Only skyscrapers are the trees."
His words were a deflection, a way not to rise to her comments about the good samaritan. Which he was still not going to admit to being, even if he figured that she'd more than half decided it was him. Plausible deniablity - that was a thing. Like not returning her smile. Or admitting that talking to her wasn't the most horrible of things that had happened to him lately.
