[Daniel was lonely too. It was hard to tell, because he was such a cantankerous person, and he made no overtures or invitations for strangers to visit. Yet he had difficulty leaving that which was familiar, and at the same time had a craving to observe (critique) the lives of others. It was hard to do that when the view from his window was so limited. and the characters so few. Quasimodo at least had a proper view.
