Clementine, she was bored as summer days was long. Wasn't that she was a city girl, because she wasn't any. The tiny town she'd grown in, it wasn't any bigger than this place. The country house in England, the one her daddy took her hunting at every summer, it wasn't real busy, even sprawling some like it was. She was used to small, but her momma and daddy both liked entertaining, and there was always someone 'round the house, spitting stories on lips that wouldn't quit. That was what Clementine missed. She missed a society of folks, and she missed sitting in the center of a room, her being adored in something real frilly.
This outing, it wasn't a thing like those drawing rooms with tea and conversation, but it was something to do. Something that wasn't an eerie quiet hospital, and something that wasn't sleeping. These days, Clementine hated sleeping. She'd taken to sleepwalking, and she found herself clear across town, near to that cemetery, every damn morning.
Tonight, she was standing outside that useless hospital. Her shift wasn't due to start for four whole hours, and she was itching for some fun. Might be she was getting too old for the kind of wild she felt in her bones, but wasn't a thing for it. Couldn't go teaching this old dog new tricks, and so she waited there, designer denim and cashmere cream under a coat that real foxes died to make pretty white.
