[news: capital]
[The Capital's very fine cathedral has been thoroughly desecrated.
Built in the 19th century, its stained glass windows are a must-see attraction for tourists to the city. The cathedral was built by a railway baron who was looking for a little salvation, and it is a point of note for American history buffs. Its primary function these days is as a landmark, but there are still masses on Sundays, and on Saint's Days and holidays it is filled to overflowing.
Wednesday morning, the priest calls the police. Someone has broken in during the night.
The pews are upside down and piled in the corners like cordwood. They show signs of scorching, but no real fire damage. There are fist sized holes in two of the remarkable stained glass windows. Hymnals appear to be the missiles - once neatly tucked inside the pews, there are now dozens splayed haphazardly on the floor, and several are found outside on the ground, lying in sprays of colored glass.
Detritus - paper, trash, some beer cans, and dollar store 'God Is Love' rainbow confetti - litter everything. Near the upturned altar there are dozens of damp balls of paper. Their source isn't far. Someone tore pages from the lush bible the priest uses during service, and turned them into spitballs, like a heretic sixth grader.
More disturbing is the blood splashed on the cross, which sits at a 45 degree angle. Someone tried to tear it down, but couldn't quite get it all the way. Tests will need to be performed to determine the origin of the blood, but there is a large quantity of it, soaking the rumpled altar cloth, an arterial spray across the face of Christ.
It's all very old-fashioned schoolkid punk rock Satanist stuff. The blood is real, if possibly from a chicken rather than a human being. Footprints in the blood indicate at least two participants, and they've even left a crude tag in yellow spray paint. If the blood turns out to be animal, this is a despicable act of disrespect to the community, but not heinous. Odd, though, that no one heard the breaking glass, the pews being upturned, the chaos going on inside. The cathedral stands on one of the Capital's busiest streets.]
