There had been offers of help from the clowns, but honestly, she was too ashamed to even think about accepting. So she left the majority of her things outside, a hand-written sign labeling them 'FREE' tacked nearby. The keys to the trailer were dropped off, and Meredith, she left. She didn't have a ride, and she didn't take much with her, and she was probably quite the sight as she made the walk into town, head down and hair covering much of her face.
How far she had fallen, she thought as she walked. From everything with Thomas, to the son she had left behind. To the whirlwind that Las Vegas had been, and then to Neil. He was still a harsh memory to think on, one that soured her mouth and pricked her eyes with tears. She had lost so much and had fallen so far, and deep down, she knew she had no one to blame but herself. This was no one else's fault. She had had opportunities to change, to try and fix things, but she had thrown them out without even thinking. Even with Eddie she had done that, one of the few people who had deigned to give her the time of day. But she had soiled even that relationship.
Her feet were aching by the time she arrived at the motel, and she was grateful she had enough cash to pay for a few days. That was all she really needed, after all. A few days to settle things. To do what needed to be done. And then, maybe, it would all be peaceful yet again.
Room 10 was the number, and the key was in hand as she dropped her bag at her feet to unlock the door, the fiddly lock giving her trouble, because of course, even this couldn't be so easy for her.
