Re: Woods: Holly and Rafe
Not caring about who liked you or how much was liberating, but it wasn't for the faint hearted. Rafe hadn't been raised that way but he had been raised to be honest. That was made more complicated by the fact that nowadays there were certain things he couldn't be honest about, for his sake and everyone else's as well. And besides, who would he tell about what he was and how that had come to be? Aubrey already knew, thankfully (and obviously), and even if he hadn't experienced the same thing himself he was probably the one person Rafe would have wanted to entrust that knowledge to. Hugh? Dante? Seven? It wasn't that he didn't trust those people, he did, but they all seemed like they had enough to deal with without learning that one of their acquaintances was a real flesh and blood werewolf.
And besides, something told him Seven Morgan knew more about him than he let on. The timing of that out of the blue job offer? More than a little coincidental. And the promise of no trouble following his close call? His employer certainly knew something about Rafe's situation. But he didn't make anything out of it and he had never asked any questions so Rafe had never seen any reason to be concerned, and neither had the wolf.
The wolf had good instincts. Very good instincts, actually. And those instincts were telling him more and more than Holly wasn't cause for concern, and when the younger man genuinely relaxed after making the connection about Hugh the wolf made the decision then and there that everything was fine. That dismissal from the beast inside prompted Rafe to give Holly a slight smile along with a small bob of his head by way of acknowledgement. Indifferent as the wolf was then, however, it definitely clocked that limp as Holly moved closer. The wolf never missed little things like that.
Turning his attention back to what he had been studying when the other man came along Rafe lifted his dirt-smudged hand and considered it before smudging those remnants with the pad of his thumb once again. "Possibly," he said after a few moments, knowing full well that that was rather vague but he needed another moment to collect his thoughts. "You heard about what we found in her bedroom? That it seemed like she just vanished into thin air." Rafe gave Holly a second with that before he went on to add, "This is similar to that." But in reverse. Obviously.
