Re: Audrey's house: Hugh & Rafe
With a low hum of a sound in the back of his throat Rafe agreed with Hugh's assessment of the unlikelihood of anyone, not just Audrey, leaving their house unlocked if they were no longer inside of it. There had been a time in places like Repose where that wouldn't have been so unthinkable, but that time was long past. Rafe would never dream of doing such a thing, certainly, and not just because of the fierce territoriality of the wolf. It definitely wasn't a good sign.
When the other man stepped back to let him take the lead Rafe gave him a nod, equal parts acknowledgement and appreciation. Without stepping fully in front of the doorway to do so he gave the door enough of a shove for it to swing all the way open, removing the immediate barrier so that he could take in the immediate sounds, sights, and smells of the place. Still no signs of movement, and the only consolation so far was that there was no rushing smell of blood greeting his nose once the place was open wide. And there was nothing waiting to rush them in any kind of ambush.
Still, Rafe waited several seconds, looking into the open house and waiting, biding his time. Only when more than ten seconds had passed with no incident did he cross the threshold and get his first decent look at the place from the inside. It was a nice place, homey and comfortable and obviously lived in and loved. There were personal touches everywhere and it was tidy and well looked after. This wasn't just a house. It was a home.
But Audrey hadn't been interested in the lounge when she came back here. Her scent led straight from the front door to the stairs leading up to the second floor and after casting a glance in that direction, still listening intently for any sounds of movement from anywhere in the house, Rafe looked at Hugh. "There's no one here." He said it with the confidence of someone stating a fact rather than a suspicion. "Are you okay to take a look around down here while I head upstairs?" Because something had drawn the young woman in that direction and Rafe wasn't entirely sure just what that something was. Whatever it was, though, it felt wrong. Not dangerous exactly, just wrong.
