Re: [Lakeside: Hannah/Rey]
"It's kind of halfway science and halfway religion and halfway magic, depending on who you talk to. If you know about the Gaia hypothesis, that's a good starting place on the science side. Religionwise, think of the sort of spiritual and self-improvement that goes on in Mahayana Buddhist practice. The magic, if you will--" Rey thought about this and decided she was being too intellectual. Go back to the basics.
"There's an energy field, generated by living things, or maybe it is the living things, that's kind of unclear. More like religious debate than anything practical. The energy is there, and its origins are probably beyond our comprehension. In my tradition, we call it the Force. Some people have the ability, for whatever reason, probably genetic since it runs in families, to feel the Force, to use it. To do things with the energy. If that makes sense." Rey paused there, for Hannah to take all that in.
"What I'm going to try with you is to use the Force to--clarify, I suppose--some of your memories. It's not trivial, it's pretty complicated in fact, and if you're not willing after hearing all this, I understand completely. If you want to know in a scientific sense, I can't be sure, but what I imagine goes on based on the biology I know and my own experience wielding the Force is: I will change some of the energy patterns in the electrical field of your brain to reduce the prominence of memories imposed on you through the magic of Repose in favour of your own memories.
"I don't know what the Force would do with false memories that were implanted or given to you a long time ago. The memories of this other person that you mentioned. It might affect those or it might not. Using the Force is something of an art. There aren't a lot of people who do it, so the sample set for the science of it is low, and experimental protocols would have a hard time accounting for bias." Rey said this last with a little wry humour.
Her tone became more serious as she wound off the explanation. "You're alive, Hannah. The Force may work a little differently with you depending on some of the science involved in growing your mind, but I feel you in the Force as a living being. You're a real person, no matter how you came to be and what has been done to you."
