Re: lakeside mansion; hugh c. & dietre a.
"I'm glad," Hugh responded, quietly. He liked the idea that ridiculous or not, sappy or not, men that were a little bit rubbish at times or not, that maybe the films had cheered Dietre up too. Or maybe it had been partially just having someone to watch them with, and maybe that had been for Dietre as well. Hugh got the impression that Dietre was alone frequently, and while intellectually Hugh knew that some people were more okay with that than others, emotionally it felt as if having someone around was always better.
"I'm not some people," Hugh returned without missing a beat, even as he kinda wanted to smack someone who might say otherwise. Granted, yes, he didn't know Dietre well, so maybe he didn't know, but so far as he could see Dietre had given up an evening on the chance that it might cheer Hugh up, and even if that wasn't a significant sacrifice, it was a gift of his time and his presence, and it mattered. "You being here is a gift that you didn't have to give me, and I'm grateful for it," he added. "So."
