Re: log: caspar & dietre; an audition
Dietre was an odd sort when it came to praise. He was starved for it, a constant hunger that ate away at him, yet if given too much he’d balk and turn suspicious. One had to strike the perfect balance for him to believe it was genuine. Caspar, so far, managed it nicely. Dietre glowed with quiet pride at being on the receiving end of an appreciative look. He was not a failure in the restauranteur’s eyes. He toyed with the fantasy of developing a different persona, becoming whoever Caspar might think he was. But that’d never happen. He wasn’t an actor, his flaws would show themselves in due time. They always did.
The coaster with Armand’s address was slipped into his pocket as he finished his wine. His own information was then written in a flowing script on the given card stock. Dietre’s handwriting was elegant, yet sensible, pretty but perfectly legible. He left the card atop the bar as he obediently moved to follow Caspar through the restaurant.
He tried not to look around like some country bumpkin, but it had been so long since he had been surrounded by any kind of opulent beauty. His little house at the carnival was blandly modern, and Adrian’s place was simple and plain. Hugh’s lakeside mansion was nice, yes, but far too rustic for his tastes. Dietre’s eyes were drawn up again and again to the high windows and the light glinting off the lion’s wings as he listened to Caspar’s vision of what his restaurant was meant to be.
“You paint a fetching portrait of your business,” he said, watching Caspar from the corner of his eye, not wanting to be caught looking at him too closely. “How could I not want to be a part of it?”
Did he have questions? “Ah… Nothing that comes to mind just now. But--” Another brief, elusive smile. “I want to thank you again for the opportunity. I am very much looking forward to playing here. I can see myself being quite happy with it.” And that was saying something, Dietre wasn’t one to use the word ‘happy’ to describe how he felt about anything lightly.
