Oh, something had gone pear shaped, she knew that as soon as she saw Marta's face and her eyes watering like pools overfull from rain. It wasn't from their conversation, and it didn't feel like a prelude to the conversation that Marta wanted to have, and she stood there for a moment, hands full of glass and fruit before the climbed onto the foot barefoot and the light in the room did that weird thing where it got brighter.
"Of course they are," she said as her legs folded up neatly and she plopped down, water sloshing in the glass but none of it escaped out, only up before it too went down and not even her fingers got wet. "Did you have more horrible conversations with people that you care about that --" she paused, tone going sweeter and less terse. "Aren't as compassionate towards you?"
