"I think it might," he said, slowly. "I need to be less afraid of it." And there seemed only one way to achieve that, all options considered.
When Ren began to speak, Adrian felt a little like he was back in school again. Not in a bad way - developing a plan to learn and grow and make this whole thing less of a terrifying, dangerous burden had a little excitement around it. Even with all his baggage, he still loved magic. He loved watching it, loved the possibility and excitement of it. He loved his own work, the methodical study that led to a provable hypothesis, but that love of breaking into the unknown was exactly what had fueled his awe for magic in the first place. His inability to get it right, the knot in his stomach when he tried to use it, had cemented those feelings.
"That sounds good to me," he said. Then, "Thank you, Ren." He met his eye. He owed Ren - he owed him. And he wouldn't forget it any time soon.
