He reached for the gate, and it stuck, and he had to pull his attention away from the woman by his side for long enough, but it seemed to just be rusted - stuck a little and when he pulled harder it gave and he was able to pull it open and let it swing, banging against the stone, and he turned to look at her, and to step back so that she could go ahead of him, and then he held out a hand.
"Maybe I should go first," he said. "I was going to let you go first, but I don't know what's up there?" He shrugged. "Maybe dragons, or pirates..." And he tilted his head, playful, the confession of a moment ago, if not forgotten, at least let loose to do its own thing for a while. "Unless you are a warrior princess, do you have a sword? Should I let you be protecting me tonight?"
