Re: [Carnival: Mars, Jamie, Si, David, Hannah]
Si's military surplus coat, heavy, durable canvas loose on his already large frame, wasn't black. It was the green boys (and girls) gave up their lives to, all the while pretending it was for a flag of red, white, and blue. His sweater underneath and peeking out, as he hadn't bothered with zipping up, was worn gray. He wasn't wearing any black, actually, unless you counted the carbon color of his slouching beanie as close enough. It wasn't a purposeful attempt to break up the funeral-goers theme, and he was far from colorful, but, even the preference for black took a level of commitment to appearance Si didn't have. His hair was a nondescript length in a nondescript color. His eyes, though blue, were muddled and dull; nondescript. The shadow on jaw and cheeks? You guessed it. Nondescript. It was how Si lived his life. He was only obvious in his size and the dull blade of his gaze, the sort that those familiar could pick out in any addict anywhere.
His hand in Amy's was cold and he just gave her a non-committal, "Yeah," as she reeled away and spun toward the approaching form of David Park. Together David and Amy were a thunderhead of black, their faces pale above collars, and Si watched, chin down and eyes up, as they came together. He'd seen David at Christmas, and, as far as Si could tell, the man looked the same. He offered a sort of smile and a nod, giving the smallest lift of his hand. Smoke trailed the slight movement of fingers, and Si took another life-preserving drag on his cigarette. Amy—Si closed his eyes—Hannah was telling David they were waiting for Jamie and Mars. He didn't need to look to know she was taking the man's hand to give him the same reassuring squeeze she'd offered Si. "I talked to Dad," he said in a half-mumble, not totally sure if he was somehow interrupting. "Uh." Eyes of that nondescript blue snagged on Hannah's and slid to David's. "I'm sure he'd say hi. If he knew either of you were alive." Si's lips hinted at a parabola, an almost-smile, before he just shook his head.
