The question, and how casually it had been asked, had been nothing short of a surprise. Did he want to get married to Iris? Yes, emphatically so, and had mentioned as much to her before. It had always caused her stress though, either earning her silence or her demurring about 'one day' and 'maybe' and he heard the words she didn't say: if he hadn't found someone else by then that he liked more.
So he waited. They had AJ, and then TK. They moved from the house in town to one of the farms, and bought goats, lambs, and chickens. The dogs came with them, and apparently he waited until one comment from her and his heart was pounding up against his rib cage, because maybe, finally, the wait was over.
He never mentioned that he already had the ring, left in the black velvet box in the corner of his glove box where he thought she'd be less likely to find it than if he left it in the corner of his clothes drawers. Manning pulled into the drive way and parked in front of the house, waiting for a moment before he reached for it, popping the lid with his thumbs so he could see it again. It was as beautiful as the day he saw it, and he was just as sure as he had been that day years ago as he was today that it was the right ring for her. He slipped it into his pocket and headed into the house, and as nervous as he was, he couldn't stop smiling either.
