|Holly looked rough. The right side of his face looked like he'd taken a fist a bunch of times, and the henley and plaid he wore didn't actually do much to eclipse the line of bruising on the front of his neck. His hair was long enough to hide the healing gash on the back of his head, so he was willing to call that a win, and his knuckles boasted plenty of impact bruises. |
He paid the Uber driver, and he walked into the orchard wondering why they were meeting out here. It was noon, so it wasn't creepy, but he wasn't in any kinda mood to come back to this place. The closer he got to the facility, the louder the buzzing was in his head, and this was the type of place you met someone to bury the body. He wasn't scared of Bea, who he assumed was a smallish girl, and Holly was a big guy at 6'2, but he knew this wasn't going to be pleasant. How could it be, right? If he found out his spouse, who was supposed to be dead, wasn't, he would be kinda fucked up too. So, right, he was expecting fucked up. He was expecting angry. He wasn't expecting her to believe him, and he knew this was just going to make his migraine worse. But he kinda wanted to face it and get it over with, so here he was.
The orchard didn't look like it had during the party. It was just a standard Repose orchard in the light of day. He'd driven out past it a hundred times, and he hadn't thought anything of it. Now he was standing there, hands in his pockets, waiting for some girl he didn't know, who he was apparently still married to.
He was early, so he wandered over to a thick tree trunk, and he sat on the dead grass, back against the bark, to wait. He shoved hair out of his face, knowing that it was way longer than Bea's Holly's would have been. The guy was military, right? And he'd seen some sports trophies and photos in his multiple trips to the rec center. The version of Holly Bea had married looked a lot more clean cut, and Holly was hoping that would count in his favor. If not that, maybe his busted face and split lip would help the guy out, because he really wanted to know what he was supposed to have been doing for the military. He just knew that shit was going to come back and bite him in the ass.
Earbuds in, he waited.
